Atlantis Tunnel Flooded

There was a flood in the tunnel leading to Atlantis’ Royal Towers late Monday evening, according to hotel officials.

Several people phoned into the Bahama Journal to find out whether the tunnel was cleared of water and sent the Journal photos from family members who helped to get the tunnel cleared.

The Journal took a tour of the area led by hotel officials just after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday and the water had already subsided.

The problem was visible, which was on the right side of the tunnel where some new pipes are currently being installed.

Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Ed Fields, sent out a statement about the flooding just before noon on Tuesday.

“Monday evening around 9:00 p.m. a joint on a water main located in the tunnel that leads to the Royal Towers gave way resulting in the flooding of the tunnel until about 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning,” he said.

“Once the break was reported, the Atlantis Engineering team quickly commenced repairs by isolating the problem, shutting off the water supply, and pumping out the water. During that time, the tunnel was impassable and the island was without water.”

Mr. Fields said it should be noted that work was underway to replace the water mains in that tunnel as problems had occurred in the past.

“It is expected that the installation of the new pipes will be completed by March 5, 2013,” he said.

“No injuries or property damage was reported.”
