Growing
up Christmas was a very busy time for our family. My dad, who owned and ran
several milk rounds, had his Christmas stock and larger milk orders to cover
the holiday period. My mum, despite helping organise stock for my dad, was
working many shifts in a local social club.
With
Mum working in a family friendly place my brother and I often accompanied her
there and was under a watchful eye from her as well as many of the regulars who
knew us well.
Growing
up this meant that we were always around alcohol and seeing others enjoying
having a drink this time of year. When we both turned 18 we too always enjoyed
the festivities and then, at the end of the busier nights ,we would all sit down and enjoy a drink together; something we continued to do until mum passed away.
I
was always a fan of the larger Hofmeister. It always had an enjoyable taste and
when drunk responsibly a much deserved treat in the holidays.
However,
that was many years ago. Sadly, Hofmeister ceased trading back in 2003 and the
memories that I had were exactly that, memories; something I always continued
doing every year after.
I
was, understandably, quite surprised when I received an email discussing that
Hofmeister was back if I was willing to try, review and potentially do a
giveaway for them!
Following
a 14 year hiatus and break (the original brand was stopped by then owners
Heineken), the new Hofmeister brand is back and has been made over into a Helles
larger, slow-brewed in Germany.
It’s
been bought by two guys called Richard Longhurst and Spencer Chambers with a
known and extended history within the drinks industry and then brewed by a
fourth generation family-owned brewery located on the edge of Ebersberger
Forest in Bavaria.
What
I instantly loved on reading this is the love of the beer by two guys on a
mission and the family centred brewery. It capsulated everything I loved about
my childhood, teens and early adulthood by the activities we did as a family;
as well as bringing back a beer that I had always loved.
The
logo, although still a bear, has been updated and modernised but still has the recognisable
aspect of the Hofmeister brand. They have even, in my opinion, smartly kept the
slogan “Follow the bear” so it brings back the love that was there without
being stuck back in the 80’s and 90’s with the old fashioned image and
packaging.
Other
than being served behind a bar, you would find the beer in a yellow can but now they can be
found in a modernised and styled bottle.
So
what does it taste like now?
I
was exceedingly lucky to be gifted for the review with 12 of their bottles to
test and try. It is very interesting from being a Hofmeister fan from before to
now as I wouldn’t say that it tasted the same and yet it still brings that
warmly recognisable taste. The colour is lighter than before and despite its 5%
alcohol content it isn’t recognisable as a “weaker” volume.
Considering
the Helles larger is meant to roughly translate to “light beer” I think this
new rejuvenated Hofmeister fits that style perfectly.
For
me, this is fantastic and allows the yearly tradition to continue once again!
Joining in with the Christmas Spirit Hofmeister have actually also just
launched a couple of gift sets on Moonpig; a 2 Pack Selection & Glass and
a 5 Pack Selection& Glass perfect for stocking fillers! Alternatively you can purchase some
of your own larger here.

My family didn't really have any traditions as far as I can remember but I have started lots with my kids and my favourite is going to our local church for the crib service on Christmas Eve, the kids won't come with me anymore so if I could bring back something, it would be that they would accompany me to sing carols at the tops of our voices together once more.
Cant believe it ceased trading.... the bottle looks so familiar, like its never been away
Spending time with my parents
I love the look of these! My family tradition is actually on Christmas Eve, we watch a Christmas movie or two and drink hot chocolates wth a big duvet and cuddles.
Fab giveaway, although if I were buying it I would rather buy it from Beers of Europe than Moonpig.... here's hoping they start stocking it soon!
Christmas Eve for us is making sure everything's tidy for the big day followed by films and cuddles on the sofa.
being with all the family
putting the christmas tree up with my children, used to look forward to that every christmas when i was younger x
putting the decorations up x
The decorations go up the weekend before Christmas in my family, and I plan to do the same.
nuts and satsumas in christmas stocking x
We have tended to go to Mum's place for Christmas. Still do so, though obviously for some family members it became easier for them to remain at their own home with young children, or due to poor weather. Children have grown and some had children of their own. We would visit after lunch, now if they want to see Mum, they are the ones who will need to visit her. Due to age, health, weather. So they have the choice as always to visit if they wish to, with some who drive they have access to transport. Christmas is a a time to spend Time with Loved Ones.

We would open our presents in the morning but my grandma always used to save one little present to be given out after the meal. I liked that.
Hanging christmas stockings on the fireplace
We are Catholics and every Christmas we used to go to a midnight mass, it was magical especially if it was snowing 😍
In the 40s and 50s Christmas Eve was a quiet time for families - not about expensive gifts. The tree never went up 'til then. Christmas for the children was that one special day, now it goes on for weeks. We would sit with hot chocolate and talk about the year that was passing to a new one, the good times and the not so good, how we had coped in difficult times, new babies that had been born - and the old ones who had passed - a time for gratitude and reflection....
being with family from the past - sadly no longer around
more simple gifts not all the expensive stuff that kids expect nowadays
Opening one small present on Christmas Eve.
I don't think as a child we had any traditions as such, unless you count overboiling the sprouts, mashing any other veg with half a block of marg and having fruit in the house for the only time all year - none of which I care to revive.
When I was a child we always had a big family Christmas with the extended family but with getting married and having my own family, they stopped inviting me, I really miss seeing them all!
Leaving a mince pie out for Santa and carrot for Rudolph on Christmas Eve
After Christmas Presents!
Stollen for breakfast
Always have all your presents & Gifts Wraped on Chritmas Eve.
mine would be more children got bikes and scooters for xmas instead of laptops and phones x get them out in the fresh air, never see kids anymore out on christmas morning like we used to x
Putting the Fairy Liquid Bottle on top of the Christmas tree
Leaving a glass of sherry for Santa, maybe 2 glasses of sherry ...
we always open one present on christmas eve to satisfy the kids curiosity x
A snowball fight with all our street on Christmas eve... it only rains now...
I would bring back having Victoria sponge cake for pudding because no one likes Christmas pudding!
opening presents after Christmas dinner
Having one present on Christmas Eve :o) Rafflecopter entries are in my real name NIKKI HAYES, thanks for the lovely giveaway and Merry Christmas!
Most of my christmases as a kid were not very memorable - I much prefer the traditions we stick to now I have a son of my own - his favourite is when we drive around the town on christmas eve to look at all the decorated houses and bright lights
Having my Dad around for christmas I still really miss his Christmas dinners!
I'll follow the bear!
Going to the local at 100pm
I'd love to go for our Christmas morning dog walk again. Pesky MS.
A good game of monopoly!
I used to love when I was a child we would take turns pulling a present out from under the tree and passing it to the person, opening presents would go on for hours. Now I am older and have 3 boys of my own they tear then open and open everything before I have even had time to blink LOL :-)
Drink in the pub on Xmas eve
opening a present each on xmas eve
Everyone playing board games together on Christmas eve!
decorating the tree together
Going to church together.
A Christmas walk
Nothing, everything I did as a child with my parents I do now with my children. We also spend every Christmas with my family so nothing has changed!
Putting the tree up the 1st wkd of December with my daughter always putting the fairy on top from being a baby. She still does and shes 26 now
I would have others` kids writing to the gifters saying how much they appreciated their gifts(rather tan hearing nothing from them further).............as too much is maybe taken for granted
we pretty much do the same now as I did when I was a kid, bed early Chrsitmas Eve after leaving out treats for santa and the reindeer, my kids wake me super early for present opening as i did with my parents, then its breakfast, playing, dinner and a movie (before I nod off on the sofa)
Church at midnight and home to a glass of mulled wine before bed.
Not a tradition as such but my dad would always roast chestnuts for me and my sister in the ashpan of the fire. It was one of my favourite parts of Christmas as a child. I do it with my children now and put the chestnuts in the ash pan of our log burner.
Making paper chains with my children. I loved it when adults helped me make decorations as a child.
In bed by 8pm.
Playing cards with my grandparents and winning silly prizes that my dad used to collect all year
Nothing really, I'm not that fussed on it!
Putting brandy on the Christmas pudding then setting fire to it
Brand new pjs on christmas eve
Good old Christmas stockings!
Extended family get together on Christmas afternoon / evening. Watch the Queen's speech, a few games, plenty of laughter, not forgetting more food and drink ...say no more!!
We still do most of the traditions I had when I was a kid. I really miss going to my Grandma and Grandad's house on Christmas Eve with all my family. i'd love to do that with my own kids (go to my parents') but we live too far away.
I would bring back our family get together we always had at Christmas when I was younger! It would be great to see family all at once in one place but it never happens.
Being around the family.
Singing carols while my dad played the piano. Unfortunately none of us can play ... and we don't have a piano!
We used to leave a carrot out for Rudolf and mince pie and sherry for santa
I always used to get an annual from 'Santa' left at the foot of my bed when I woke up on Christmas mornings. It kept me occupied for a few extra minutes before I woke up my parents :)
I always do all the same traditions now as my family did with me when I was little, xmas eve boxes with new pjs, breakfast muffins for xmas morning and lots of fun and games on Christmas Day
I lived with my Grandparents and they used to do the old fashioned Christmas Stocking Tradition. Toffees, satsumas, a coin, hankies, etc. It seems so special now. x
It would be nice to bring back the traditional stockings with an orange apple and nuts and instead of a piece of coal perhaps a packet of sparklers just so todays children can be thankful for their more extravagant prezzies under the tree
Going to midnight mass every year xx
Got to be the full english christmas brekkie followed by Family photos x
