Historical context of megaquakes
The Noto Peninsula was struck by a 7.6 magnitude quake on January 1, leading to significant casualties and damage. The 2011 undersea quake, with a magnitude of 9.0, triggered a catastrophic tsunami, resulting in approximately 18,500 deaths and the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Past megaquakes, such as those in 1707, 1854, and the 1944-46 pair, have often originated from the Nankai Trough off eastern Japan.
