About 04.11.2005: fdr memorial near the dc tidal basin. trying to shoot the cherry blossoms is nearly impossible due to the large number of tourists who came out en force due to excellent weather. here, one of their offspring leaves his mark on my long exposure attempt. nothing special, just messing around. what do you guuys think? any and all comments are greatly appreciated.

thanks for your thoughts Tom...i'm still quite undecided, and am in no position financially to make a purchase anyways. i already have a nikon 28-80mm and this is one reason i'll consider staying nikon. damn those 2 MP! such a hard choice.
you are right about a 4 day week, btw...
have a great weekend!

good to hear that, todd. it's about time the whole country went to a 4-day work week. why do i say D70? well, i'm a nikon bigot ;^)

seriously, it really depends on whether you have an investment in glass. if you are starting from scratch, you're better off choosing the camera that works for you best. the extra 2MP is certainly something to consider seriously. the only thing that would sway or supercede that would be your glass preference. in general, nikon makes better wide-angles and canon makes better teles. another thing you may want to do is go to a photo shop and hold both cameras. play with them and see which one feels better for your style. just pick the one that suits you best keeping in mind that it is likely a lifetime decision. good glass is so expensive that switching brands is difficult.

anyway, good luck making your choice. let me know what you decide.

take care,
tom

hi tom...i'm doing wonderfully, thanks for inquiring. started a new job, moved back to the city, and don't work fridays! i'll REALLY be happy once i get a new cam. i've been leaning towards EOS 20D for the extra 2 megapixels...why do you say D70??

also, i never responded to this edited version. this abstract version works great. not sure if it surpasses the original though, the ghost boy makes it!

very nice capture here tom, nice use of a open shutter, i enjoy the ghosting of the little boy on one of the blocks, very nice soft water, and good composition with the blocks moving from left to right, thanks for your comments on my work, keep the northern VA images coming, i grew up in herndon VA and miss that area, seeing images of it makes me smile....

Stunning.. Love the control over, S speed and the exposure, the way waterfalls resulted is great, this is an ideal subject for movement photography. Super. Saeed

marcus, getting the water silky is a matter of slowing down your shutter speed. during the day, that's a bit hard to do. the solution is to use an ND filter. neutral density (ND) filters will reduce the amount of light passed but will not affect colors. it's a simple reduction of light which allows you to shoot a much longer exposure. works great for shooting streams, falls and moving water in general without having to wait until dusk. i usually carry with me a 2-stop and 3-stop ND's for just this sort of thing. btw, you can stack them too if you need more than 3-stops.

i did see that you are mostly a bird shooter but the landscapes you have are gorgeous. it is a very different method of shooting as it involves mostly scouting, waiting, waiting, waiting, followed by a flurry of activity for about an hour. i gotta say that i've tried my hand at wildlife shooting and have the utmost respect for what you guys do. i am terrible at it. for me, the only thing harder to shoot than wildlife is people ;^)

so you shot it early morning? i should've known ;^) the setting sun is definitely what made my attempts so difficult.

take care,
tom

ps - i love a good argument ;^) i'll be your backup anytime.

Hi tom, I really dont know if he got the ice cream / computer thing, but thats what you get with a big vocabulary and a 5 cent brain LOL....

By the way I saw this photo earlier and really was amazed how did you get the motion blur in the daytime, I have always had problems with that, I think after looking at your settings i get the concept. really wonderful shot.

as for my coastline shot, I took a trip to LA on hwy 1 I live in san Mateo, a few miles from SF, I caught this shot on a really clear day early morning which dosent happen much as im sure you know, but I would always try to shoot the coast in the afternoon with the sun in my face, having it at your back makes all the difference....
I am pretty much a average landscape photographer at best, nothing like what you do. but Im running out of birds to shoot :)..
Take care tom, until the next thread, I will call for backup......

Hi Tom, Very well done indeed. Sorry you missed out on the cherry blossoms but this is quite nice also. Heck, we have all seen the cherry blossoms but we dont get a chance to see the silky water you have presented here that often. Great work. Hope all is well over your way and hope to get together with you sometime in the near future for another shoot. I really enjoyed the day we spent together a few months ago. Thanks for your recent comment and I look forward to seeing your future posts. Been kind of busy at the restaurant so my commenting has been sporadic.

Take care,

Jim

btw, i always lived in northern va. i just spend a lot of time in la for work. it's been a while since i've been out there tho. i see alot of shots of japan on your other site. very nice! you should stop by uf more often and show us those shots.

are you in la or still out in the far east? good to hear from you.

take care,
tom

pat, the NEF is 10MB. hotmail will choke. i'll send you an invite to gmail. it's free. allow emails up to 10MB (convenient, huh?) and they give you 2GB+ mail storage. just follow the instructions on the email i send you. when you're in, email me from there and i'll reply with the file.

mark, of course he did. this wouldn't be postable otherwise ;^) i probably sounded a bit negative in my about: but it was directed at the ridiculous amount of tourists. i probably should've softened my description ;^)

btw, i would really love to see this shot with a toy camera. should introduce some cool twists.

take care,
tom

pat, sorry, i haven't gotten to it. i'm in the process of weeding out my archives. i do like what you did. esp, toning down the garrish trees with a nice blur. however, i can't see it very well in this tiny size. i'll make you a deal: i'll send you the NEF so you'll have "real" raw file to work with and then you can send me the full size result. how about it?

take care,
tom

Just board at work today.. By no way do I think you image needs improvment. I only picked it becausse it was it was such a great image. I have no raw images of my own to play with so I borrowed one of yours. Just a little PS workout.

Tom, Just stopped in to see of you had done anything with the Foggy foot bridge shot. Took another look at this one. I finnaly saw the young man hiding under the water... Cool!

Ahhhhh......ok it took me a bit but I do know see it.
First off, even without the ghosts I like this composition very much.
I think that there is a great amount of detail in this image and the misting of the water is the kicker.
I don't know Tom.....this image just puts off a very quality feeling.
Well done.

pat, i agree. the top left is rather distracting. the off color is due to the late afternoon light which made everything a bit reddish. i'm thinking that the way to shoot this one is at night. that would solve the crop problem along with the top left problem. however, it would also be quite different looking.

take care,
tom

hugo, i was afraid that the ghost wouldn't be enough since it is a bit hard to see. i tried to bring him up a bit but failed miserably. that is way beyond my level of skill with ps. so i decided to post it as-is ootb. there'll always be a next time ;^)

tom rumland tom rumland   {K:14874} 4/13/2005
paul, we probably walked right past each other at some point ;^) i think this happens more often than we think. maybe we should make usefilm hats or some such so we can spot each other out there.

see my comment to todd miller (above) regarding the top left. i don't much like it either but it was hard to reframe it and keep the fountain intact. i guess i'll have to reshoot this one at night. it's a different photo but it should look very nice.

as to the tripod: i'm lazy too ;^) but i learned early on that you always need it when you don't have it. i also have a bad caffeine habit and my hands tend to shake. mostly when i think about it, which is when i really need them to be steady ;^) so i "always" carry a tripod and my bag full of accutrements that i might possibly need. hardly ever need them but they do come in handy. for example: what are the chances that i would've needed a 3 stop ND filter? almost nill. and yet, i found a use for it.

take care,
tom

todd, thanks! glad you dig it. i thought the same about the "ghost". the upper left corner is very harsh, i admit. i don't much like it either. but, cropping it would chop off the tops of the fountain in parts. actually, it results in a much more abstract composition. what do you think?

take care,
tom

PS - posting again is great, btw. it's just hard to get back on comment mode. god, this is hard ;^)

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply.... You're right, I hadn't noticed the ghost, the spot of light in the water on the right of him is more evident... I think making them more visible would've worked better.

I'm now looking for a second one, as you specifically mention the plural of ghost....;) The only one I can see is the one with the blue shirt... I think I can spot a faint red whiff on a higher level...:)

In answer to your question, I don't think the ghost is prominent enough to fill in the blanks I mentioned, though...

Cheers,

Hugo

thanks, michael. actually it's true. bright (direct) light tends to make waterfalls shimmer and reflect pretty badly making a proper exposure very hard. this was shot late in the day (notice the off color of the trees in the upper left) and the fountain was completely in shadow.

take care,
tom

tom rumland tom rumland   {K:14874} 4/13/2005
stefan, ah! i see what you mean by intermediate. actually, i have to admit this was an accident. i was trying to work out the "right" shutter speed in order to get the water to look just so. this child walked on and off the frame during the exposure. the accident is really the only reason i decided to post this one. but, your comment gives me a few ideas to try. probably in a situation where there is no running water.

take care,
tom

hugo, thanks! i always appreciate your comments. however, this comment makes me think that you may not have seen the "ghost". i thought it alone created enough tension. perhaps if it was more visible? ;^)

take care,

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 4/13/2005
What I meant was (for your picture) to try a shorter shutter and maybe get the "ghosts" to show up a little more.

tom rumland tom rumland   {K:14874} 4/13/2005
stefan, very cool effect! i'll have to try that. but i'm curious, what do you mean by "intermediate shutters"? did you take multiple frames?

Nice exposure Tom! I might be tempted to do a curves layer and tone down the top right some, other than that A realy great waterfall shot.

I was one of the many tourists trying to shoot the cherry blossoms on the 11th also :) I previously was in D.C. during the week and managed to shoot a few trees without all the people.... I also for some reason did a tour of all the memorials, and yes.. took photos of them for the 100th time LOL.... I like this shot of the FDR memorial. Think that the trees in the upper left distract a little from the image. Love the blurred effect of the water (you carried a tripod around there? I am usually too lazy to carry mine :) ) nice work

Todd Miller   {K:16464} 4/12/2005
good to see you posting again...
'tis a great shot technically as was pointed out...but i do not agree about the shot needing an eye catcher-i like the more subtle ghost in the corner there...makes for a very unique shot. well done tom! the only thing i don't particularly like is the somewhat harsh upper left corner...it just doesn't fit well with the otherwise soft image imho. adios!

long exposure is the way to go for moving water. Nice. Subtle.

I heard that overcast days are better for waterfalls, but that does not seem to be the case here...

  0

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 4/12/2005
Hi tom, Good to see you took my suggestion seriously! Techincally a very strong shot, you handled it very well, exposing just right to capture the highlights and the shadows, using the slow shutterspeed to softne up the waterfall, rendering it almost to a velvet veil. Beautiful!

As to the composition and tension, to use my lingo, I'm less outspoken. The diagonal composition seems to work just fine, but there's no real eye catcher here. Whereas a typical landscape shot doesn't really need one (referring to your DV shots), I do believe one is almost required here to create the needed appeal. Do you see what I mean?

The sharpness is outstanding, as is the quality. I do believe it just needs that little extra to make it really tick.

Cheers,

Hugo
