Toy Fair 2017: Big Chief on Doctor Who

We've seen a lot of new licenses from Big Chief Studios in this year's Toy Fair 2017 coverage, and now we jump back into a property that is, not only well known to Big Chief 6th Scale collectors, but amazingly, profoundly British. DOCTOR WHO!! The future of the Doctor on his BBC TV show seems uncertain, but his toy counterparts will never stop replicating and marching on. Let's catch up with Matt Booker of JediNews at UK Spring Fair 2017 and see how many Doctors you can fit in a camera phone...

Toy Fair 2017: Character Group on Doctor Who

Toy Fair 2017 Character Group Doctor Who Toys
Continuing our Toy Fair 2017 coverage, we hop back over to M@ Hawkins who had a fairly quick visit with Character Group in search of the newest in Time Lord accessories, weaponry and icons (aka ACTION FIGURES!!) From the look of Character's compact display (which was not bigger on the inside), one might assume the company is winding things down with the license? Maybe we are jumping to conclusions, but it's worth a discussion. Let's take a look at what was on hand and see if our tentative assumption isn't warranted...

Orphan Black: Season Four on Blu-ray & DVD July 19th

The new season of BBC AMERICA’s award-winning Orphan Black, starring Golden Globe® and Emmy® nominee Tatiana Maslany, hits Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S. on July 19, 2016. Orphan Black: Season Four contains never-before-seen bonus features, including exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes content, as well as an extended scene from episode eight.

If the only way forward is to go back, then “clone club” is in for a wild ride. Sarah, Alison, Cosima, and Helena (all played by Maslany) have finally settled into some sense of normalcy after a dramatic third season. Sarah has been reunited with her foster mum Mrs S. (Maria Doyle Kennedy), daughter Kira (Skyler Wexler) and the clone original, Kendall Malone (Alison Steadman) at an Icelandic hideout; Alison is enjoying the spoils of the drug trade with husband Donnie (Kristian Bruun) and helping the once rabid Helena settle into domesticity; and Cosima is hard at work on a cure for her illness with lab partner Scott (Josh Vokey). We find Sarah’s battle-worn foster brother Felix (Jordan Gavaris) accepting that he’s been left behind, and trying to pick up the pieces of his life post “clone gate,” while Rachel (Maslany), the clever self-aware clone is reunited with her “mother,” Susan Duncan (Rosemary Dunsmore) and attempting a reconciliation. But peace and calm seldom last long with this lot, and Sarah’s hard won tranquility is disrupted when she receives a call that thrusts her right back in harm’s way.  A mysterious ally tied to Beth (Maslany), the clone whose suicide first led Sarah to discover her new sisters, brings Sarah back to where it all started. She’ll follow Beth’s footsteps into a dangerous relationship with a potent new enemy, heading in a horrifying but familiar direction.

Misfits & Marvel's Cloak and Dagger Coming to Freeform/ABC Family

The latter part of that title is fairly important I think, as a show premiering on ABC Family would be squeaky clean, no? I could be wrong, but it's something worth noting, especially for a show like Misfits that was known for its sex, drugs and foul mouthed action (all of which, I was quite happy with!) Beyond that, more Marvel on TV is always AWESOME!! I'd say i'm at least minimally aware of Cloak and Dagger's history in the Marvel Comics Universe, as they popped up often in Spider-Man..fought alongside the Avengers..and i'm sure I saw them running with the X-Men and/or New Mutants once or twice. Not being A or even B list characters, it will be interesting to see what Marvel villains this production is allowed to fold into their universe. Another question...would they be Inhumans rather than Mutants and so, tied to the Agents of SHIELD TV show? We'll know soon enough!

Toy Fair 2016: Big Chief Studios on Penny Dreadful, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Danger Mouse & More

2015 was a hell of a year for cloth action figures! In a category where Hot Toys pretty much dominated for many years with smaller scaled figures being MEGO reproductions or new items in the same style, we've now got a whole new ballgame with NECA and Mezco hitting mass retail with amazing, quality product. Across the pond, our friends at Big Chief Studios prefer to stick to the traditional 12 inch format and wows with every release, making many a Doctor Who fan's dreams come true while also filling the wish lists of Sherlock fans. This year, we also get a look at Penny Dreadful 12 inch action figures as well as some Danger Mouse merchandise, on display at Spring Fair in the UK. Let's get into it...

SDCC 2014: IDW on Orphan Black

Orphan Black, the acclaimed sci-fi series by Temple Street Productions, assumes a new identity in the form of a comic-book series from IDW Publishing. IDW’s series will not be a clone of the show but will feature some all-new stories set in the complex and thrilling world of Orphan Black.

Orphan Black, in addition to being a captivating TV series, is a perfect premise for comics,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “And as the second season has expanded the series in exciting new directions, that has only increased the amount of stories we’ll be able to tell in comic-book form.”

Orphan Black, which has just been renewed for a third season, centers on Sarah Manning, who after witnessing the suicide of a woman that appears to be her doppelgänger comes into the knowledge that this woman and indeed herself, are two of many biological clones. Sarah takes on the woman’s identity and uses her position as a police detective to uncover the mystery behind what she is and what that means.

Toy Fair 2014: New Doctor Who

Our friends over at Action Figures Facebook are getting in on the new toy fun with a nice stack of Doctor Who reveals! Fresh off a giant anniversary and a brand new Doctor to celebrate with plenty of plastic dopplegangers, we were sure there would be plenty to see. Let's dive right in...

"This is a post regeneration 12th Doctor still wearing the 11th Doc's clothes. This will not be his official outfit. I wish they had developed a few more new figure molds but I think it's smart of them to focus more on army builder figures. The Zygon is cool but it would've been nice to see a Sontaran and Silurian too. I like the clawed and special weapon Daleks too. This is all 50th Anniversary and Xmas special stuff so maybe they're working on another new wave after this for series 8 at the end of the year. I hear the 2 unreleased time zone sets are supposed to come out."

This haunted and battle-worn Other Doctor is finally forgiven after helping find a new solution to end the war, giving the Eleventh Doctor a new purpose as he heads into further adventures.
