What is a FASTag Scanner and How Does it Work?

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive overview of how FASTag scanners work, their components, benefits for users and operators.

09 May 2024 by Team FinFIRST

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly to the toll owner. A FASTag scanner is used to scan the FASTag sticker that is affixed to the windshield of vehicles, enabling seamless check-ins and checkouts at toll plazas without having to stop for cash transactions.

What is a FASTag scanner?

A FASTag scanner, also known as an RFID scanner, is used to read the RFID tag attached to vehicles. It is a device that uses radio waves to communicate with a RFID tag or transponder attached to vehicles. The scanner reads the unique identification number stored on the RFID chip or transponder attached to the FASTag.

The scanner has an antenna that emits radio frequency waves and powers up the FASTag's transponder when the vehicle approaches the toll plaza. The transponder then transmits the unique tag ID back to the FASTag scanner online antenna. This tag information is then sent to a centralised server where the prepaid toll amount is deducted.

Benefits of FASTag for users

FASTag provides significant benefits for vehicle owners and passengers using national highways in India. Some of the key advantages include:

  • Efficiency
With FASTag, vehicles no longer need to stop at toll plazas for cash transactions. The scanning and deductions happen seamlessly at speeds of up to 60-80 kmph, saving significant time otherwise spent waiting in long queues.
  • Convenience
FASTag removes the hassle of having to carry exact cash or stop the vehicle every time at tolls. Users simply affix the tag and link the wallet once, enjoying cashless toll payments anytime on supported highways.

  • Special offers
FASTag users could be eligible for special offers and discounts such as the MAX program from IDFC FIRST Bank that offers benefits up to ₹5000.
  • Digital receipt
An electronic receipt with transaction details like date, time, toll plaza name, and fee deducted is generated for every toll payment made via FASTag. This helps in expense tracking and claim processing if needed.
  • Vehicle type auto detection
The tag embedded in FASTag helps automatically detect vehicle type (car, bus, truck, etc.) from the pre-registered details, doing away with the manual entry of vehicle class at booths.

With less time spent at tolls due to FASTag, journeys become more relaxing. Drivers don't have to worry about having exact cash amounts on toll transactions.

Future of FASTags in India

Considering the benefits offered and solutions provided to initial challenges, FASTag is expected to play a defining role in the future of Indian highways and transportation. Some notable trends and projections include:

  • Near 100% coverage of national highways, expressways, and major state roads by dedicated FASTag lanes in the coming years.
  • Integration with other mobility solutions like national transit card, pre-paid toll wallets, and commuter loyalty programs.
  • Advanced analytics of tag scan data for traffic patterns, infrastructure planning, toll fee structuring, and enforcement of dedicated lanes.
  • Vehicle tagging at the point of registration and pre-linked FASTag accounts for new four-wheelers to further boost adoption rates.
  • Unified electronic toll collection standards across regions and compatible interoperable tags pan India.
  • Contactless in-vehicle FASTag integration using technologies like IoT, beacons and connected car platforms.
  • Evolution towards vision-based automatic number plate recognition tolling for a fully cashless toll collection system.

FASTag has transformed the Indian tolling landscape, facilitating seamless highway mobility while generating valuable commuter data insights for authorities. As the technology evolves and its adoption rises further, expect an even enhanced and fully-cashless toll experience in the coming years.
