Being recognized for his mastery in the field of architecture, the founder and principal partner of MAD discussed his views on urban development in our modern cities, and the role that architects and young people should play in building our new metropolises.

Instinctively growing out of the mountainous landscape, the serene design sensibility of the village is reflected in its natural setting. It offers a new type of vertical living that while architecturally complimenting the surrounding forest, also enhances the levels of comfort and well-being of its inhabitants, establishing a synergy between humans, nature, and the local culture.

MAD unveils “Mirage” ─ a renovation proposal for Montparnasse Tower in Paris, France. MAD’s design transforms this huge black monolithic building ─ positioned in the city center ─ into an artistic lighting installation that reflects the city upside down.

MAD’s ‘Clover House’ is a winner of the Spaces, Places & Cities category in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards 2017. It has been selected for its ingenius architectural planning that has seen the transformation of a two-storey family home into a fully developed education institution.

MAD announces the winners of “2017 MAD Travel Fellowship”. From over 500 global applicants, 5 overseas students will be granted the travel fellowship fund to visit China, while 5 Chinese students will be granted the fund for their overseas traveling.

Due to the large volume of applicants, the MAD Travel Fellowship will postpone the recipient announcement to May 29, 2017.

The Clover House was announced to be a winner in the “Kindergartens” category of this year’s Architizer A+ Awards, and was specially designated as a “Jury Winner.” Out of entries from over 100 countries, the Clover House was selected as a shortlisted project earlier this year, and today was deemed an official winner of its category.

MAD revealed its collaboration with Sawaya & Moroni during Milan Design Week. “Mogu,” a chair designed by Ma Yansong, is inspired by the smooth, contoured forms of fungi.

MAD presents their research proposal “Historical Future: Milan Reborn” for the Scali Milano project, community-reactivation masterplan research headed by FS Sistemi Urbani (FS Urban Systems) and Comune di Milano (the Municipality of Milan) with the support of Regione Lombardia (Lombardy Region).

Ma Yansong was invited on October 18, 2016 as part of the Plenary Panel Discussion in this year’s CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) International Conference hosted in Shenzhen, China. Along with Winy Maas, Yan Meng, Patrik Schumacher, and Jerry Yin the panel engaged in a conference discussion entitled “Tall Buildings and Context: Appropriate High-Rise Vernaculars”.

The China Philharmonic Orchestra revealed MAD’s design of the new China Philharmonic Concert Hall. The concert hall was designed in collaboration with renowned acoustic expert Yasuhisa Toyota, and will be the orchestra’s first permanent residency.

CNN recently released a feature video as part of their Future Cities Asia series on the completion of Harbin Opera House, quoting it as “one building that can transform the future of a city”. The video gives viewers an unprecedented view into the newly open to public opera house.

Curbed recently put out an exclusive feature on MAD’s newly released Xinhee Research & Design Center. The article emphasizes on today’s office designs and organic styles in architecture. Calling Ma’s signature style as strikingly organic and how his designs all “tell a story”. Xinhee Research & Design Center situated in Xiamen is currently under construction and nearing its completion.

MAD have completed their first project in Japan, the Clover House kindergarten. Located in the small town of Okazaki, the school’s setting boasts views of the paddy fields and mountains, characteristic of the Aichi Prefecture. The kindergarten was originally operated out of the old family home of siblings Kentaro and Tamaki Nara, which soon became too small and unfit for expanding their educational goals.

Located in the Chinese coastal city of Xiamen, MAD’s design for the Xinhee Design Center is currently under construction.
