Origin/meaning

The frog probably indicates the position of the town in the moors in the 13^th century. The arms are supposed to have been granted in the middle of the 15^th century, but the document got lost in the 18^th century. The oldest known seal dates from 1514 and already shows the frog as the sole symbol. All later seals and arms show the frog. Only in the 19^th century the field was sometimes shown red (see arms as shown by Hupp in the 1920s), but otherwise the colours have been as they are now.
