So I have been playing with this super adorable fabric over the last little bit. It is Ten Little Things by Jenn Ski and I am putting together a little bakeshop tutorial for it. This little pile however is now in my scrap bin. Why you might ask. Because I broke one of my cardinal rules and did math late at night. It seems whenever I do that, I tend to make errors. As was the case here. I figured the size of these squares wrong and so they are all 1/2" to small. One of these days I will learn. Does this happen with any of the rest of you or is it just me that has a brain that shuts off at 9 pm???
Most nights I have a tough time turning my brain off!! Last night after laying in bed for an hour I finally got out and stitched from 11:00 till 3:30! I hate insomnia!! But have 2/3 of my Honeyman's quilt to topgether! One more row! LOL
ReplyDeleteI have entire days like that. There are just some days that I should have my DH hide my rotary cutter.
ReplyDeleteUt oh! Big oops! I'm sure you are cursing at yourself over that one. But I sew know what you mean. Over the weekend I was tempted to continue to work on my teacher quilt blocks but I've learned that at the first yawn I need to stop or I end up making mistakes and getting mad at myself. Cardinal rules aren't meant to be broken.
ReplyDeleteNo cutting fabric after 9pm at this house, as there is bound to be several pieces cut the wrong size!
ReplyDeleteYes, after 9pm the rotary cutter gets locked up. I even tend to stop piecing after 9pm because I'm bound to put the block together wrong. As I did last night with one of my Quilt Along blocks. LOL
ReplyDeleteI have a problem when I try to do the math in my head without double checking it on paper. That happened the other day, but fortunately I cut them too big that time. I wasted a little bit of fabric, but not as much as I would have cutting them too small. Good luck with the next batch!
ReplyDeleteI have a hard enough time doing math at ANY time, much less at night! =^..^= I don't cut at night at all, even if the math is done. Just can't trust myself to cut correctly!
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely not just you! After about 8/9pm, it doesn't matter how many times I check my math, I always come out with the wrong cut!
ReplyDeleteOh, I know how you are feeling. I miscalculated and had to scramble to find fabric to finish the project. After 9pm, I stay away from rotary blades!
ReplyDeleteMaths is always difficult, even at 9 a.m. I know exactly how you feel!!!
ReplyDeleteOh it does not have to be after 9pm for me to do that.....
ReplyDeleteHope you did not bin those cute smaller blocks. I am sure you could use them somewhere.
Oh, you are singing to the choir on this one!
ReplyDeleteI once cut 300 rectanges at 3 X 4.25 instead of 3 X 4.5. No fixing that little stunt!
I don't do strange rotary cutting either, like oddly sized pieces cut LOF instead of WOF when I am tired either. It gets too expensive.
That's something that would happen to me. There usually comes a point at night when I start making mistakes.
ReplyDeleteMust. Step. Away. From. The. Machine.
If I don't, big mistakes happen! :)
One of the many things I love about quilting is the math and geometry of it all...but then I'm a former math teacher. Even so, I make all kinds of mistakes when I'm tired.
ReplyDeleteoh, wow. that happens to me all the time!!
ReplyDeleteMy mind shuts down at dinner! I learned many years ago that I can't even sew at night!
ReplyDeleteBad luck. Maximum annoyance. Di xo
ReplyDeleteFor some strange reason I always finish projects late at night also never a great idea.

Stop by for my quilt givaway to guess my babys b-day and weight.
I also don't try to cut items at night for the same reason... my brain is tired! Simple sewing and appliquéing I can do, just not figuring. The rotary cutter is not my friend \in the evening!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear this! I, too, suffer if I try to quilt when I'm tired. I am anxiously waiting to see what you do with the charms.
ReplyDeleteThey'd still work for something nice though! I usually sew seams the with the wrong side out if I sew late at night! ha ha!
ReplyDeleteNice to know someone else makes blunders like this so that I am not alone!
ReplyDeleteI wish, mine only seems to start firing up at 9pm lol
ReplyDeleteI think mine shuts off earlier than that these days I would never cut anything at night these days ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this posting, it is making me feel much better about my weekend math mess-up. Can't wait to see the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteOnce the sun goes down, my brain goes into relaxation mode and will not think serious thoughts at all. If I prepare handwork pieces in advance, I can work on them in front of the TV, but no cutting or planning after dark for me.
ReplyDeleteMy brain never turns on when it comes to math...late at night, early in the morning, or noontime...makes no difference!
ReplyDelete9 pm? more like 7 for me. That is, if it ever turned on for the day in the first place.
ReplyDeleteIt can happen at any hour for me. =)
ReplyDeleteI can not do math any time day or night. I have to call one of my sons. I do however do a lot of cutting and/or stitching into the wee hours of the night. Maybe they can be used on the reverse side??
ReplyDeleteOn a different note......I won on one of the Valentines blogs !! Thank you again for the fun hop :)
I sew and cut all times of the day, but I have problems turning off my mind lately. Math is super fun to me (that is probably why I studied it in school).
ReplyDeleteI do try not to cut material if I am not focused though, cause that is when I mess up.
Oh no! I hate when that happens. It has happened to me more than once late at night and sadly it's even happened to me during broad daylight. hehe. I do try and measure twice and cut once. Your fabric scraps look great, any chance you can reuse them? maybe a mini? Best of Luck!
ReplyDeleteI'm just bad at maths in general!! It's a wonder I can even make a quilt at all!
ReplyDeleteHope it'll work out anyway :)
Been there, done that...It's frustrating!
