Applesauce Cake

Another vintage recipe from Mom's Kansas Ladies Cookbook The recipe is from a Mrs. Elmore A. Bickford There isn't much for specific directions by today's standards. Yep...that old....but I'll do my best!
Ingredients
- 1/3 C shortening shopping list
- 1 C brown sugar shopping list
- 1 egg, beaten shopping list
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg shopping list
- 1 tsp cinnamon shopping list
- 1/2 tsp cloves shopping list
- 1/4 tsp salt shopping list
- 1 tsp soda shopping list
- 1 cup raisins, rehydrated and drained shopping list
- 1 Cup warm unsweetened applesauce shopping list
- 2 Cups flour shopping list
- 1 C chopped nuts (optional) shopping list
How to make it
- Cream shortening and sugar and add egg
- Add soda to warm applesauce
- Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with the applesauce
- Beat well after each addition
- Add raisins and nuts
- Bake in moderate ( 350 ) oven for 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean
- Since today's ovens are way more accurate, I would start hecking on this at 30 minutes maybe
