I have the same problem. Often, when I get home, it's very warm in the house (last night 89F) even though the thermostat is set for much lower (76F). I adjust the thermostat and cooling starts, but it takes 2+ hours to get down to the set temp. This is a 1 year old A/C system that was installed with the Nest thermostat.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I am sorry that you are having issues with your Nest Thermostat cooling mode, I’d be happy to help you. Let’s check it out.

Before we get started with further details, let me ask you some important questions:

  • Does the thermostat display show any power error codes or messages?
  • Are you able to share a picture of your wiring?
  • Have you set up a temperature schedule for your thermostat?
  • What type of system do you have? (Heat Pump or conventional type)
  • Did you verify if the fan and heating are still working?

Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Power: Ensure your AC unit is turned on and received power. Check the circuit breaker or fuse box to see if a tripped breaker or blown fuse is interrupting the power supply.
  • Thermostat: Verify that your thermostat is set to "cool" mode and the desired cooling temperature is lower than the current room temperature. You can check the following guide to Troubleshoot strange heating or cooling behavior.
  • Check Wiring:
    • Turn off power to your system at the fuse box or system switch. This will help prevent damage to your system and help keep you safe.
    • Pull off the Nest thermostat display.
    • Check that all connectors that have wires are down (see picture).
    • If needed, re-insert wires so that the connector button stays fully pressed down. If the button isn’t down, your Nest thermostat won’t know there’s a wire in the connector.
    • You may need to re-strip and straighten the wire ends so that they can be fully inserted into the Nest base’s connectors.
  • Check that your system doesn't need maintenance.

Note: If you're not comfortable working with electrical wiring, consult a qualified technician (Nest pro).

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Mario
