Oh What Fun Fabric Tour

Monday, June 19, 2023

The day is finally here that I get to share the project I made with the
darling fabric line, Oh What Fun by Elea Lutz for Poppie Cotton.

I first saw this line at the 2023 International Fall Quilt Market.
I was immediately smitten with Elea's signature
vintage style, the unique color palette, and the
fun details of this fabric line.

Oh What Fun features Santas, snowflakes and text, polka dots,
plaid, stockings, Christmas trees, snowmen, flowers and holly, and my personal
favorite...ice skating reindeer.  It's just so whimsical and sweet.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with this line.

I chose to make a quilt using the Patchwork Plaid pattern from my book,
Quilt the Rainbow.  I wanted to see it in another colorway
besides blue and white.  I think Christmas fabrics were the
perfect match for that pattern.

I paired the Oh What Fun fabrics with a dark blue chambray
fabric that I had in my stash and a white with red polka dot fabric by
Lori Holt for Riley Blake.

Jen Ostler in Highland, Utah quilted it for me
with a fun loop and snowflake design.  It's called
Snowflake Meander.  Jen always hides an extra little
shape in the quilting for its recipient to find.
This time it was a tiny star - so cute!

There are 3 different Plus blocks in Patchwork Plaid.
It finishes at 70-1/2" x 90-1/2" and would be cute in any colorway!

I backed it in a navy blue plaid fabric and bound it with
the red Good Measure grid fabric from my fabric line,
Treasured Treads with Poppie Cotton.

Oh What Fun is now in stores.
Grab a fat-quarter bundle and my book, Quilt the Rainbow
so you can make this quilt too.

Congratulations to Elea for another fabulous
fabric line!  I just love everything she creates
and am so happy I got to be a part of this tour!

My Red, White, and Blue Quilts

Tuesday, June 6, 2023

Hey friend.  I've been meaning to share with you all of my
red, white, and blue quilts - together in one place.
Hopefully, if you're wanting to make a
patriotic quilt, you'll find some inspiration here!

First up is my Star-Spangled Pineapples quilt.
This is a free pattern that Amanda Niederhauser (@jedicraftgirl)
and I created for our Five Fat Quarter Fun series a few years ago.

HERE is a link to the free PDF pattern and
HERE is a link to the original blog post with more photos and details.

Next up are my beachy, faded Stars and Stripes quilt
and my No-Point Stars quilt.

Both of these patterns are by other quilt pattern designers.
Stars and Stripes is by Camille Roskelly of Thimbleblossoms and it's available
in her shop HERE.  The No-Point Stars pattern is a free tutorial by
Allison Harris of Cluck, Cluck, Sew.  You can find it HERE.
I don't have blog posts up yet about my versions.
I want to share more details so I'll do that soon in another, separate post.

Another red, white, and blue quilt that I made
many years ago is my Scrap Jar Stars quilt.

This is a great stash-buster project!
This pattern comes with instructions for 4 different size quilts
and is available in my Etsy shop HERE.

I've also made my United quilt.

It has 50 really simple flag blocks (to represent the 50 states)
plus 5 stars and a heart block!  It's a fun make and very beginner-friendly!
United finishes at 78-1/2" x 87-1/2".
You can find the pattern in my Etsy shop HERE and
HERE'S a blog post with all the details about it.
I've also made a scrappy, low-volume version that you can see HERE.

If you're looking for a really simple star/flag quilt
check out my Glory quilt HERE.
I share a free cutting chart & tutorial for Sawtooth
Star block sizes 3" - 20" plus all the details for this quilt.

Another option is a red, white, and blue Star Patch quilt!
I've made 3 Star Patch quilts (a colorful one, a red and white one,
and this one).  It was just screaming to be made up in
red, white, and blue don't you think!?!

And for all you scrap lovers out there, I've got a tutorial
for this Firework quilt.  I made a baby-size but it
would be really easy to make it bigger.  A coloring sheet is included.

And if you're in the mood for some simple patchwork,
I've got this red, white and blue Rough and Tumble quilt pattern.
It comes with instructions for 5 different quilt sizes and is great for beginners!

I think it would be cute to layer any patriotic quilts
with a simple red or blue quilt (like the ones that I made for my new book,
Quilt the Rainbow).

You can find both of those patterns in Quilt the Rainbow; available HERE.

I feel like you can never have too many red, white, and blue quilts!
Do you have a favorite of the quilts I shared today?

I hope you found some inspiration here!
Happy Summer friends!

Blossoms and Buds - Emily Belle Version

Sunday, March 5, 2023

 Good morning!
I've been wanting to share this quilt with you
for a while now; I finished it back in
September of 2022, I think.

I love this quilt because
A. It's a classic design
B. It's scrappy
C. It uses lots of my favorite fabrics from my stash
and
D. The Baptist Fan quilting gives it a very vintage vibe.

This is the original version:

It's the Blossoms and Buds
pattern from my book,

It's amazing how different this
version looks compared to the orange version!

In the orange version
the background is scrappy and
in this version the background is all
one fabric.  They look so different!
Which one do you prefer
(and disregard the orange if that's not your thing)?

I've seen several different versions online
and they're all awesome.  There are
so many ways to make this pattern your own
depending on your colors and fabric placement.

The only fabric I bought specifically
for this project was the background fabric -
Emily Belle Liberty from Riley Blake
in the color, Magnolia (a soft, buttery yellow).
Emily Belle comes in about 45
different colors so you could
pick the one that speaks to you!

And it's such a great stash buster!
Even the binding is scrappy!

Quilt the Rainbow gives instructions
on how to make a scrappy binding
or scrappy quilt back!
There are lots of useful nuggets of
information in it, besides the 10
versatile quilt patterns.
You can grab the book HERE.

I had this wild backing fabric in my stash
just waiting for the perfect project!
It's called Cameo by Kaffe Fassett.
It incorporated so many of the colors I used
for the quilt front so I thought
it would give this simple quilt just
the "wow factor" it needed.

I like to label my quilts with labels from Everemblem.
I get the 2" cotton, fold-over, sew-in labels.
If you go to their site, you'll have to pick a cotton label
and customize it from there.  They're so convenient.
Now I don't have an excuse to not label my quilts!

Jen Ostler of Dry Creek Quilting
in Highland, UT quilted it with this
classic Baptist Fan pattern.  There are many different
Baptist Fan pantographs out there but I love this particular
one because it's so traditional.  It's the
pantograph and I've used it many times!

Before I let you go, I just want to remind you
about the 2023 Quilt the Rainbow Challenge.

from the Quilt the Rainbow book and

Quilt the Rainbow 2023 Challenge

Wednesday, December 28, 2022

Hello!
Today I have a fun announcement to make!
In 2023 I will be hosting a
Quilt the Rainbow Challenge on Instagram!

I hope this will be a win-win situation for both of us!
I'm dying to see your versions of the patterns from my book, Quilt the Rainbow
and this will provide good motivation for you to whittle down your stash
and make some cute quilts!

Here's how the challenge will work:

First, you will need my book, Quilt the Rainbow.
If you don't already own it, I have autographed copies in my ETSY SHOP.
And for the next two weeks, I have a 20% discount code for the book.
Just use code "2023CHALLENGE" at checkout.

Next, use any of the patterns from Quilt the Rainbow
to make a quilt top.  It doesn't matter what size you make or what colors you use.
Most of the patterns are easily customizable.  I can't wait to see your version!

You can make them in just one color of the rainbow
or in multiple colors (like the cover quilt)!

After you make a quilt top, post a picture of it on Instagram
and be sure to tag me @gigis_thimble with the hashtag
#quilttherainbowchallenge.

At the end of each quarter
(March 31st, June 30th, September 30th, and December 31st)
I will hand-select a winner from the hashtag pool that posted during that quarter
and will announce the winner on Instagram the following day.

**Each unique finished quilt top (or finished quilt) posted on Instagram
during each quarter of 2023, using one of the patterns from Quilt the Rainbow
with the hashtag #quilttherainbowchallenge is an entry.**

* It doesn't matter when the quilt top was made
as long as it is a pattern from Quilt the Rainbow.
* You can repost projects in each subsequent quarter
as long as they weren't chosen as a winner in a previous quarter.
* You can enter as many times as you'd like each quarter
but each entry has to be a different project.

PRIZES
(In no particular order):
- 21 Country Confetti Fat Quarters from Poppie Cotton.

Seaside Quilt

Friday, December 23, 2022

 It's Friday, December 23rd, 2022.
Two days until Christmas.
This month I've hosted two family parties,
bought, wrapped, and delivered all the neighbor/friend gifts,
purchased and wrapped a good portion of our family's gifts,
ate my weight in toffee, made two batches of cinnamon rolls,
made two batches of caramels (both of which ended up in the trash, sadly),
had a girls' night out/favorite things exchange with my besties,
did two puzzles, and lots, lots more!  It's been a great month overall.

Today, I have been taking it easy even though
I should be out getting a few last-minute gifts
(my husband is on it though, thank goodness!)
I'm "done" and craving some rest.
Writing a little blog post isn't too hard...
So today I want to share with you my finished Seaside quilt!

I made this during the Seaside Quilt-Along I hosted
in September and October.

The pattern is from my book, Quilt the Rainbow.
Here's the original version:

Seaside is a great stash buster.  I used up tons of aquas for the background
so all I needed to buy was the solid teal fabric for the accent color.
While I was making the aqua version I also envisioned it
with low-volume fabrics for the background.  I was really excited
to see it come to life during the quilt-along, starting with this fabric pull:

I really love the soft, muted tones of these fabrics!

The quilting was a new-to-me design called Swivel Circles.
I really like it with these earthy fabrics.  Someone even said it reminded
them of seashells which is perfect for the name of the quilt!
Jen Ostler quilted it for me and did a fantastic job, as always!

I bound it with this copper print from Fig Tree's Cinnamon and Cream line
and backed it with Intrinsic Soft from Shine On by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics.
I absolutely love that dark green floral fabric!  So pretty!

My labels are from Everemblem.
I get the 2" cotton, fold-over, sew-in labels.
If you go to their site, you'll have to pick a cotton label
and customize it from there.  I've loved the ease of these labels.
Now I don't have an excuse to not label my quilts!

This is a great project for beginning quilters!

Seaside is such a quick, easy make.
I really see myself making more of these in the future.
I'd love to have one in all the colors!

If you'd like to purchase a copy of Quilt the Rainbow
you can snag an autographed copy from my Etsy shop.
It includes 10 patterns to help you whittle down each
color of your fabric stash + lots more!
Check out THIS post for all the details!

So which version do you like better?
Can you see yourself making Seaside and if so,
what colors would you make it in?

Thank you for stopping by today and happy holidays to you!
