Scratch: The Ultimate DJ allows players to scribble, snare and spin to a new beat. Executive produced by Quincy Jones III, Scratch is an innovative new videogame designed to expand the boundaries of the music/rhythm genre to embrace the hip-hop and R&B culture. In the game, players use an authentic turntable style controller to turn classic break beats into symphonies of sound. Scratch features original recordings from the catalogs of many top urban artists and allows players to re-imagine songs on the fly and add their own creativity.
This is a doozy. Last spring, Activision bought 7 Studios, which had been developing Scratch: The Ultimate DJ for a company called Genius. Genius felt that Activision had unfairly purchased 7 Studios in an attempt to corner the DJ-game market with its own forthcoming offering, DJ Hero. A lawsuit resulted.
Now, 7 Studios is suffering more hardship at the hands of Activision, as it's been forced to lay off 30 staff members (via Industry Gamers). In a statement, Activision said that the layoffs were a part of the "realignment" of the studio, which would help it to "better reflect Activision's upcoming slate of music-based games." The Los Angeles County Superior Court has granted Scratch DJ Game LLC, which is developing the upcoming game Scratch DJ, a preliminary injunction in its lawsuit against Activision. Scratch DJ Game LLC alleges that Activision unlawfully tried to delay development of Scratch DJ so that Activision's competing DJ Hero could gain competitive advantage.
