Bungie grant expectant 360 owners a taste of the last installment in the Halo trilogy. The main course isn't until 2007.

Rusting hulks are scattered along the horizon. Moving slowly back through a blasted heath, with a few scrubby trees breaking the rocky topography, rolling dirt blows over the wreckage of a recently conquered planet. Perhaps this is Earth after the final, fruitless battle has been lost.

Amid the weeds and a fallen sign rattling in the breeze, an armored warrior can just be seen striding forwards on a distant outcrop. As the camera continues to pull back, wreckage is strewn and slowly filling with dust. A flash of blue light jolts through the ether; Cortana is twisting and writhing,

Stepping firmly through the wreckage of battle units, Master Chief heads through the smoke, clasps his weapon, and surveys a promontory in front of him. His armor is pockmarked with small arms fire. Cortana attempts contact, with a mixture of worry and rage, as she flicks in and out of existence. The reflection of a gigantic crater can be seen reflected from Master Chief's visor.

The Covenant arrive with a massive display of craft both small, large, and sun-blocking in its immenseness. Covenant craft swoop in, startling nesting birds from the cliff side as the camera twists around, as the invasion force begins to investigate the giant circular structure embedded in the valley below Master Chief. Lightning arcs from the sky, and a maelstrom of cloud and energy circles the center of the crater.

Slowly, huge metal fronds begin to point skywards, as the massive, and possibly ancient structure begins to open. Smoke is expelled from the gaps, and the cliff Master Chief is standing on begins to fall away. Master Chief takes a step back, as his visor is bathed in white light. Covenant ships attempt to circle around the structure. The light increases. Master Chief takes a step back. Everything turns to white.

"This is the way the world ends ..." Cortana murmurs.

Finish the Fight. 2007.

So ends Bungie's latest attempt to systematically send their legions of fans into spasms of joy, and also keep them salivating for (by our reckoning) at least a year before the last in the franchise ships. With Bungie telling anyone who'll listen (i.e., everyone) that this is real-time, and not much more (save that the epic music involved a full orchestra), we're left with a mothership full of questions, such as;

What's up with Cortana's long-distance threatening/scared tomfoolery? Why is she affecting the dying moments of Cain from Robocop 2? Is this Earth? What's that giant valley-sized crater with its huge opening pincers and atmospheric disturbances? When is the game going to be playable? Where can I download the highest resolution version of this trailer and check it out for myself?

Hey, we can answer the last one: Download the E3 Trailer for Halo 3 on FilePlanet in all its real-time glory.
