Nintendo R&D1 is short for Nintendo Research and Development 1. One of Nintendo's in-house development teams, R&D1 was headed up by Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi until his departure in 1996.
In 1986, a number of programmers separated from the team to found Intelligent Systems, which before long became a Nintendo-owned development studio.
Once the most dominant team within Nintendo's cadre of developers, R&D1 was later headed up by Takehiro Izushi.
Nintendo eventually retired the name R&D1 and merged the division into the EAD group in 2005.
