Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's SVP of Worldwide Studios Michael Denny welcomed the creators of LittleBigPlanet to the PlayStation family today, announcing that SCE has acquired Media Molecule. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Denny said that the UK developer is now a wholly owned part of SCE.

LittleBigPlanet, a critical and commercial coup for Sony, sold well over two million copies worldwide and earned more than 90 industry awards in 2008, including multiple Game of the Year nods. Denny made the announcement on the PlayStation EU blog, and said the decision to purchase a developer with only one game under its belt was a no-brainer.
The decision was an easy one after meeting five young, talented people with a massive ambition to redefine video games as we know them and create and grow a fantastically talented team at Media Molecule. This was followed by a fantastic exclusive relationship that culminated in the launch of one of the most innovative PlayStation games of recent years.

Media Molecule followed up Denny's announcement with a press release of its own, stating that the company will officially join SCE's global development operation, SCE Worldwide Studios. Co-founder Alex Evans said the acquisition will allow the developers to take innovative, creative gaming to a whole new level.
Since Media Molecule's inception, we've had a uniquely close relationship with Sony. Over the years they have consistently shown their dedication to Creative Gaming and Media Molecule, not only through their support of the company, but their willingness to take risks and embrace our often unusual approach and ideas.
And for LBP fans worrying the future of the Sack people will be drastically altered by the media conglomerate, Denny promised that Sony did not want to alter the Media Molecule recipe, stating, "The most important thing is that nothing will change from your perspective. Media Molecule will simply continue to make great games."

Sharkey says: It's always a bit scary when a small, innovative developer gets gobbled up. But for now, congratulations are due to the team at Media Molecule. Cheers!
