Okamiden Questions & Answers

Okamiden is a big game and there are numerous places where you may find yourself questioning what it is that you're expected to do next. Our Walkthrough should cover every such point in detail, but sometimes all you have is a quick question that needs a quick answer. You'll find answers to the most common questions below, starting with general questions and then followed by answers to more specific questions that pertain to specific plot points or dungeons within the game.

Common Questions & Answers

What do I get if I assemble the five masterpieces throughout the game?
There are different rewards for completely assembling the various masterpiece scrolls throughout the world. Those rewards are as follows:
  1. Revenge Slip
  2. Peace Bell
  3. Charm Set
  4. Golden Cat
  5. Scent Charm
You'll have to search carefully if you want to find all of the pieces. We outline their locations in our walkthrough.
I'm missing some monsters in my Creatures log. What do I do?
Make sure that you battle and defeat at least one of every type of monster you encounter in the game. Most of the last four out of eleven pages are made up of boss monsters, but earlier pages relate to the enemies you find while exploring dungeons (including a few that are only available in dungeons that you can't revisit once you complete them) or the overworld. Some of those are the wandering scroll encounters, so make sure that you battle a few of those enemies in each new area. There aren't many total areas in the game, so it won't take that much extra time. If you battle and defeat every type of monster in the game, you'll receive a special reward for subsequent trips through the game.
How do I upgrade my weapons?
As you battle demons, you'll eventually find that it's possible to finish them off in special ways. When a demon's health is nearly drained, you often can perform special attacks to finish the job and receive pieces of the demon. For instance, the clam-shaped enemies can have Bloom magic drawn around their unconscious forms and then you can follow that up with the Cherry Bomb move so that they swallow a bomb and blow up from the inside. They won't always drop parts, but often they will. When you find enough components and take Lucky Coins to the blacksmith who will set up shop along the right side of Yakushi Village early in the game (once you give him directions), he'll upgrade your weaponry for you. It's quite possible to finish the game without ever upgrading a single weapon.
How long is the game?
The answer to that question depends on how you play. If you skip the cinema scenes (there are a lot of them in the game, some quite lengthy, and they count toward your time) and don't worry about completing side quests or gathering many items, you can probably finish in less than 20 hours. If you try to gather everything and watch all of the story sequences, you'll probably spend closer to 25 hours in the attempt or perhaps even more.
How can I revisit an area I've been to already?
Certain areas in the game can't be revisited once you clear them. Those places are dungeons. You can freely visit any portion of the overworld during many stages in the game, either by backtracking on foot or by warping. You'll learn the ability to warp once you reach a certain point in the game. Just head to certain save pedestals (marked with a red 'X') and you can select from a list. That makes it easy to zip around the world, which you'll want to do if you plan to find all of the Masterpiece scrolls and the Antique items.
How do I cross this wide pit?
There are numerous pits throughout the game. Crossing them is often part of a puzzle in one dungeon or another. The actual process for crossing pits varies depending on who you have in your party. Sometimes a pit is just a pool of water and you need to have Nanami swim across for you. Then you may be able to join her with Vine magic. Sometimes a pit is a literal pit and you have to send Kurow flying across it, then join him with Vine magic. Or sometimes you'll have to let someone walk across a weak ledge that can't support your weight, then press a switch to produce a bridge. Whatever the case, you can have your partner hop off your back by pressing the 'X' button, and then you can press 'L' or 'R' to bring up a screen. Trace the route that you want your partner to follow using the stylus. The line should turn red. While your partner follows the route you choose, you'll sometimes have to use more skills to stop enemies from attacking him or her.
Susano won't let me leave Kamiki Village. What do I do?
Visit the Cave of Nagi area, which you access from the high ledge overlooking the village. You'll need to have Kuni in your party. Inside the cave, you'll learn the Power Slice ability. Once you leave the cave, head back downhill and talk to Susano. He wants sake. Head to his house, the building not far into the village and to the right. Go downstairs and you'll see an item hanging from the ceiling. Use the Power Slice ability and you'll knock it free. Then you can grab it and take it to Susano. He'll drink it and fall asleep. During the scene that follows, use your Power Slice ability on the huge boulder and then you can leave the village.
What are the passwords in the Demon Market?
On your first visit to the Demon Market area, you'll need to provide passwords to the imp to advance further in the market. You can find the passwords by backtracking through the small area and investigating everything (see the Walkthrough for full details). The passwords are:
  1. Demon Market
  2. A fool never changes
  3. The Witch Queen passes
Make sure that you give the passwords in the order indicated.
How do I get past the puzzle with the hooks in the Underground Ruins?
In the Underground Ruins, you'll come to an area where two walls with three hooks extending from each are positioned. It's clear that you have to do something there to proceed, but it's difficult to tell exactly what that is. Head toward the left and you'll find a ledge that wraps around to a place where an armored cannon is guarding a metal ball with a 'U' on it. Defeat the cannon by using your Power Slice ability to deflect its shots, then push the metal ball back around (being careful not to knock it into the pit, though it will rematerialize in its original position if you do) to the upper right. When you can push it no further in that direction, use your Magnetism ability and draw an upside-down 'U' to push a second ball (in a separate room) along a track toward the top of the room. That will put it near a third ball. Repeat the process and that third ball will slide right along a track, then land on a switch. Now you can head along the new corridor, where you'll soon find the secret to solving the puzzle with the hooks.
How do I save Manpuku's mother?
Late in the game, you'll head into the Moon Cave to save his mother, Charity. As you near her, a scene follows and she is dropped into a soup kettle. The camera pans to show a huge flowering plant in the left side of the screen. You need to use Vine magic to draw a vine from Charity to the plant, but it's difficult to be sure that you're doing the right thing because you can only grab Charity with one end if you tap precisely the right part of the screen. The trick is to aim for her pointed hat when you start the Vine spell, then draw the line (which should start with a green point if you've aimed properly) from that hat to the plant. That will free her.
When's the last time that I can backtrack?
The game will warn you when you are about to enter the final area, though not in those precise terms. It simply suggests that you may not be able to leave once you enter. As long as you haven't passed that point in the game, you can head to a save pedestal and warp around the world that you've already explored or even travel through time as desired. Specifically, the last time that you can backtrack is when you clear the Ice Room dungeon. Once you enter the Moon Cave again after doing so, you'll no longer be able to return to Yakushi Village or any other attractions.
