The Esports World Cup’s (EWC) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (CoD: MW3) event features 16 teams that will be divided into four groups initially. Four days of action are scheduled, all being streamed directly from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the Grand Final being a best-of-seven series that will take place on August 18th.
The prize pool sits at an incredible $1,800,000 (USD), with $600,000 going to the winners. Of course, the organisation that finishes in first place will also be awarded a trophy containing 3 opponent's keys of their choice before being etched into history on the first-ever EWC totem!
For dedicated fans or newer esports viewers who are interested in observing the Call of Duty action, we've got you covered as we look at the tournament format while also sharing some of the top teams and players in the running!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Format

The first stage of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III event will see the four teams in each group compete in a GSL Format. Put simply, this means that if an organisation manages to pick up two wins, they will finish first or second in their respective group, progressing to the quarterfinals. On the other end of the groups, the teams that suffer two losses will be sent home.
After the group stages, the tournament will then take the form of a single elimination bracket, with all series being a best-of-five format, apart from the final, which will be a best-of-seven.
There are three different game modes that appear during each series, too, which are played in the following order:
  • Game 1 - Hardpoint
  • Game 2 - Search and Destroy
  • Game 3 - Control
  • Game 4 - Hardpoint
  • Game 5 - Search and Destroy
Should the series be a best-of-seven, the format will stay the same, with control and Search and Destroy being introduced for games six and seven, if necessary.

Teams To Look Out For

When it comes to keeping an eye out for specific teams, there are always two organisations that have dominated the Call of Duty scene for many years. Of course, we're talking about OpTic Gaming (Represented by OpTic Texas in the Call of Duty League) and FaZe Clan (Represented by Atlanta FaZe in the Call of Duty League), who have been engaged in a tug-of-war for the last decade, trading blows back and forth throughout each CoD release.
Recently, OpTic are the in-form team, coming off the back of an incredible performance at the Call of Duty League Championships 2024, lifting the title and picking up the coveted CoD Champs ring.
Atlanta FaZe finished sixth at the Call of Duty League Championships 2024, however, they're a team you simply cannot count out. They won the Call of Duty League 2024 regular season and with a team of dominant slayers such as Simp and aBeZy, there's rarely a match involving FaZe that isn't packed with excitement!

Players To Look Out For

One player to look out for is Shotzzy of OpTic Texas, who was named the MVP at the Call of Duty League Championships after dropping an impressive 1.17 kill-to-death (KD) ratio across the tournament. His in-your-face playstyle always makes for an entertaining point of view, as he is often seen charging forward with the Rival-9 SMG.
Next up is Cellium of Atlanta FaZe, who is known for being the determining factor in the success of the team. When he's making confident plays, taking unusual routes in Search and Destroy and putting up kills in respawn-based game modes, Atlanta FaZe truly becomes an almost unstoppable force.
Last but not least is Arcitys of Lore Gaming, because after all, who doesn't love a good underdog story? He proved himself in the amateur scene during the 2023/24 season, winning the Call of Duty Challengers Finals 2024 to earn his entry into the EWC. Many Call of Duty fanatics will argue that Arcitys deserves a spot back at the top level, which could certainly be on the cards if we see an impressive performance at the Esports World Cup!
