This Months Magazines

Loved seeing my articles in three magazines this month!

They're all step by step articles (except an extra page for an obituary for my woodturning mentor Chris Eagles)

I'd carved a pair of Gnocchi paddles for Woodcarving Magazine, Turned a magic wand for Woodturning magazine and for Woodworking Crafts I split and hewn some yew logs to make a gate.

I can't quite believe I've filled two folders of magazine articles now. I've got some fun projects for articles coming up as well!

What how-to woodworking articles would you like to see me tackle?

Teaching Children Woodcarving

My girls have wanted to try a bit more carving lately.

So I set up a couple of stations for them to work at with a mallet each with a few of the basic tools needed. I also cut them a small piece for lime each for them.

52 Weeks Of Carving

I have kept my other blog sawdustinmysocks running for well over 10 years, sometimes I've put quite a bit on there and sometimes it's gone quiet.

This year I'm using it to document a challenge I've set myself where I'm trying to carve something every week to really develop my carving skills, something I've wanted to dedicate time to since I started to train to be a carpenter.

I'm posting every week on there what carving and craft work I get up to and how I'm trying to learn the skills that I want. I'm enjoying the process and although it's a hard goal to set myself, I think that to do something like this every week is a great way to learn the skills and muscle memory needed.

My new workbench is my latest project I've finished and I'm enjoying having it in my workshop - where I spend so much of my time! So if you're wondering what I do in the evenings my other blog has the answers - hopefully time better spent than watching TV. A few hours carving with a good audio book is sheer bliss!

My workbench might be a bit over the top but let me know what you think!

Making A Shave Horse With My Daughter

I have an axe head I bought a while back that still needs a handle. I've looked at buying one online to match but can't find anything that I think will fit or that I like. So I want to make my own. Now I have plenty of tools that I can make one with but I know from experience that a shave horse is the easiest way to hold and work it.

Now I have made a couple over the years (one for my brother and one for myself) but I sold mine when I had nowhere to store it after we moved here. I've decided that even if I just chuck a sheet over it it'll be worth having it outside. I also had a few lengths of less than straight 4x2 so this seemed a good use of them.

Unusual Commission - Miss Matched Drawer Unit

My carpentry has pretty much ceased during lockdown, but I have got an unusual commission to try to fit in around childcare.

This one is for one of my toughest customers - my mother!

I Made Our Double Bed - The Economy Of Making Your Own

Lay in bed I could literally count the springs sticking into my back.

I'd wake up feeling worse than when I'd gone to sleep. The mattress had to go and the crappy bed with it.

The Mattress in question was 10 years old and the first bed that we purchased after having a few second hand ones from family.
Our new bed!!!
It was from Ikea along with the bed frame. I broke the bed frame the first night by pushing one bit with my foot and it's not got any better, slats fall out frequently and I had to make some modifications the first few weeks of having it. By the end I'm fairly sure it's just my collection of books that's keeping it up!

New School Library

So a few months ago I got an email asking about a reading chair in the forest school area. I volunteered my services to build it, I thought that'll be fun! Somewhere along the line the new school library became my baby instead!
The village has had it's school in temporary accommodation for the last three years, and although it's been fine it's not the best for the children and tricky for them at times (too hot in summer for one).
So over the last year there has been a new school being built with much excitement from everyone who has children there.
The Head Mistress was keen for the new school to have an amazing library but with usual budget restrictions (tight) that a school normally has. We decided to go with some Ikea shelving (low cost and look nice) and then build a few items to make it truly unique to the school. Some reading pods were decided upon, a corner bench and a feature tree on the back wall with leaves to hold the names of people that have donated toward the school.
I was given a fair bit of creative freedom with how all this was to be made!
My eldest helping unload all the wood from the truck.

MDF was used, cheap - ish and takes a good finish.

Pentagon shape for the reading pod

Checking the size was right

Working out the depth of the pods - they match the Ikea shelves.

Dry fit to check it all fits.

Starting drawing the tree. this took me ages to draw! I'm no artist! I used 12mm ply.

The bottom of the tree - branches to come from the top.
I decided two trees would be better in the corner and fill the room better

The top branches of the trees. I ended up cutting these with a jigsaw instead of a router and it took quite a while!

First pod assembled and trimmed out ready for painting.

Ikea shelves together, testing the pods out for fit!

Starting to paint the two pods and the corner bench. Two coats of undercoat and three coats of top coat! Took a fair time to do but got a good finish!

Top branches added to the trees.

Final coat of paint on the units. The purple colour matches the feature walls in the school.

Everything in place - ready for books now!

I decide to add in the books as a surprise for the head mistress - makes the library look finished!

Leaves added to the trees. I cut 92 from a sheet of 6mm ply!

Library all finished - just waiting for children

Great space for the kids.
I'm really pleased with how it all looks at the end. I was so worried about the trees - not something I normally make!

I'm also pleased that my daughters and son will get to see it everyday when they're at school and know their dad made it. It was lovely yesterday morning when I saw the head mistress and she just said "I know this is unprofessional but..." and then gave me a huge hug! So I guess she was pleased!

It's incredible that our children get to benefit from a new school and I love that I was allowed to be a small part of it, I feel it's such a privilege! I have utter respect for the head Mistress who has poured her heart and soul into making sure this is a success.

My daughter came home from her first day there and was buzzing with excitement, when I asked her how everything was she'd just answer "Amazing" each time!
