Review: Enslaved in Shadows by Tigris Eden
Title: Enslaved in Shadows
Series: Shadow Unit Book #1
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Author: Tigris Eden
Pub Date:
June 18th 2012
Publisher: Book Rhythm
Format: eBook
Summary from Goodreads
A man's Past leads to his Future......
Agent Stone of the Shadow Unit's job is simple, most days. Work in the Shadows, police his own Kind.
When an unwanted assignment turns out to be his darkest fantasy from the past, Draven can't help but be conflicted by the memories of the past and his responsibilities in the future. But his decision has been made.
The Heart of a woman is Tested........
Jes can't let the tall dark agent back into her life.
How can she trust any man after what she's endured. Years of abuse have broken her down and she doesn't have room for more. The man she turns to for help hasn't abused her physically but he's tormented her emotionally. A past betrayal left her scarred, but also brought her life.
Can she accept him into her heart and trust him again?
One will survive and adapt, the other will realize hearts can be mended even if it’s a bit too late.
The road to forgiveness sometimes only brings more pain. Unexpected events set their lives on two separate tracks leading to one outcome. Lives will be changed and an emotional battle to save their souls will leave them both trapped and enslaved in their need for one another.
Enslaved in Shadows is a new urban fantasy novel from debut author, Tigris Eden. Let me say up front that Tigris is a friend of mine. She's my fellow Sister of the Werefly and I was uber-excited to read her novel. I received the ARC in early June and started reading it with glee. The bad news is my "writing" brain took over as I read each page. There were editing challenges throughout that wouldn't allow me to sink into the story. The good news is - I had an ARC and Tigris let me know that changes were made to the final print version and many of the editorial issues were corrected. So instead of continuing with the ARC, I purchased the book with "One Click" and let Chessiebomb read to me. I'm a Text-to-Speech whore with my Kindle 3 - aka Chessiebomb. Listening to a book allows me to turn off my writing brain be 100% in reader mode. I'm happy to report It worked.
The world of the Shadow Unit is an interesting blend of the usual paranormal creatures such as werewolves and vampires, with a few new immortals that aren't commonly seen. The world building was extensive and felt a bit rushed at times, but being the first book in a series, it's expected.
The romance between the main characters, Jess and Draven is three-alarm chili hot with several steamy sex scenes. Jess is a broken woman trying to rebuild her life when her past catches up with her and turns her world upside down. Draven is pure alpha male and is a great contrast to Jess' personality. I wanted to know more about his background beyond the Shadow Unit. I wanted to see what made him tick. There were glimpses - but not enough to satisfy me. Hopefully we'll learn more in the next book.
There are a couple of torture scenes that I could have done without. One was okay and fit well with the scene. The second had me a "WHOA!" After learning about Jess and what she's running from, the torture scene didn't see balanced with the details. It was a bit much for me.
Overall, the story kept me hooked. I really enjoyed the secondary immortal characters and Ms. Eden in a great path to adding humor and snark between her characters. I look forward to learning more about them and their special skills in future books. Enslaved in Shadows is a great start to what I hope will be a long running series.

Review: Serpent's Kiss by Thea Harrison
Title: Serpent's Kiss
I can hardly wait for the next book in the series, Oracle's Moon. It will feature a new character that was introduced in Book 2, Storm's Heart -- a sexy Djinn named Khalil. Booyah!
Series: Elder Races, #3
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author: Thea Harrison
Pub: October 4, 2001, Berkley Sensation
Format: Paperback, 312 pages; eBook
In order to save his friend's life, Wyr sentinel Rune Ainissesthai made a bargain with Vampyre Queen Carling—without knowing what she would ask from him in return. But when Rune attempts to make good on his debt, he finds a woman on the edge.
Recently, Carling's Power has become erratic, forcing her followers to flee in fear. Despite the danger, Rune is drawn to the ailing Queen and decides to help her find a cure for the serpen's kiss—the vampyric disease that's killing her.
With their desire for each other escalating just as quickly as Carling's instability spirals out of control, the sentinel and the Queen will have to rely on each other if they have any hope of surviving the serpent's kiss
It's been a while since I posted a book review so forgive me as I pour some oil on the squeaky wheels of my "review" brain.
*Ahem*. Have I told you how much I FRICKIN' LOVE THEA HARRISON? I may have tweeted it about a bazillion times already, but I do. Her writing style is a refreshing change from the typical paranormal romance. There are no plain vamps or shifters in Ms. Harrison's books. She gives us Dragons, Unicorns and Gryphons... yeah, you read that right. Gryphons!! Need I say more?
Rune and Carling are complete polar opposites. They're both ancient creatures, but Rune has managed to keep up with life and continues to reinvent himself as time passes. Carling, on the other hand has not. Her many years as a vampire have made her bored with life but the same "gift" that has given her long life is now killing her. As she tries to settle her affairs and prepare for her own death, Rune enters her life and they begin a journey of discovery and find a love that is timeless.
The romance in Serpent's Kiss is nuclear. There's no other way to describe it. If you've read Dragon Bound, you know Ms. Harrison isn't shy with the smex and she never disappoints. There's a certain scene that takes place in a hotel lobby that made me sweat! The wit and snark that is Rune jumps off the page. Here's one of my favorite quotes from Rune:
Just wait until you see what I can do with the fancy stuff, like a bed.
Of course, no Elder Races book would be complete without an appearance from the Wyr Lord, Dragos and his mate Pia. Here's my favorite quote from the Lord of Snark, Dragos:
“Bloody hell,” Dragos muttered from across the clearing. “I don’t know what the fuck that was, but something definitely happened.”
Serpent's Kiss is a "slow build" kind of story. By that, I mean Ms. Harrison is a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. In the Elder Races series, each book helps to expand the world and characters she has created and Serpent's Kiss follows that same formula. Some readers feel that it slows the pace of the story, but for me I thoroughly enjoyed it. When an author takes the time to build a world so intricate and so complete that it's seamless from book to book, they've nailed it and will have me as a fan for life.
I can hardly wait for the next book in the series, Oracle's Moon. It will feature a new character that was introduced in Book 2, Storm's Heart -- a sexy Djinn named Khalil. Booyah!

Summary from back cover:
Rhiannon thought facing off against a deranged child vampire was the most dangerous task she would ever have to undertake, but she’s about to discover making a deal with a demon is far, far worse. Sent forward into another reality, one in which vampires are now dominating nearly extinct humans, she realizes the sooner she returns to her vampire lover, Disco, the better.
Unfortunately, time changes a lot of things; including those most trusted around her. When she’s faced with a loss and betrayal unlike any she has ever known, her focus shifts from severing the debt between the demon that wants to kill her, to exacting a revenge that will bring forth consequences she never could have fathomed. What I can say is once again, author, J.A. Saare nails it! If you thought Dead, Undead and Somewhere in Between was a great book - you will absolutely ADORE The Renfield Syndrome.
Saare takes Rhiannon (and readers) on an emotional journey that will leave you clutching your chest in excitement. I love it when an author writes "outside the box" with their characters. For example, think of the number one thing a character would never do -- then make them do it AND make the consequences OMFG worthy. Yeah -- it's like that.
Just wanted to share one of my favorite quotes from the book:
“Rhiannon's Law #68: If you're going to fly by the seat of your pants, rock out with your cock out. The landing is going to hurt either way, and you might as well make an impression when you nail it.”
We all know that Rhiannon is a smart mouthed-azz kicking-badazz chick. But Saare takes you deeper into Rhiannon's relationships and interactions with the characters in this book.
It's one thing to try and control events that occur around you, but Rhiannon is in 100% react mode from start to end. She can't control anything. Saare pulls no punches in this story line and she even throws in a few dirty kicks to the ribs while you're down. But trust me -- it's a good thing.
I wouldn't recommend that you read The Renfield Syndrome as a stand-alone. There are too many necessary references to Book 1 that you'll miss (it also adds to the excitement and pacing of the story). So if you haven't started this series. GET TO IT! If you're waiting on a reason to move on to Book 2 - stop procrastinating! You will not be disappointed.

Review: Chosen By Blood by Virna DePaul
Series: Para-Ops, #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author: Virna DePaul
Pub: July 7, 2011, Berkley
Format: Paperback, 384 pages
Summary from back cover:
Felicia's experience as a hostage negotiator makes her a natural asset to a team divided by suspicion and prejudice. While being in close contact with Knox makes the desire she feels for him difficult to deny, Knox much marry a vampire, and she's not about to be his human lover on the side.
As the team embarks on its dangerous mission, Knox is determined to convince Felicia that the passion that connects them is enough to transcend both race and her human idea of morality. But Felicia is intent on teaching Knox that complete trust and love are the only forces strong enough to unite human and Other, once and forever.
When a book catches you off guard while reading -- where do you start with the review? I was stumped!
I'd heard so many great things about Chosen By Blood that I was ecstatic when I was able to pick up a signed copy from the author herself at RWA. (Virna DePaul was sooooo nice!) So I start reading it about a week after I get home. I'm so hooked on it - I purchase the Kindle version just so I can keep reading via TTS while at work. (Have earbuds, will read.)
DePaul takes the time to build a fantastic world where Vamps and "others" coexist (not under the best circumstances) with humans. I loved the different twist of "tainted blood" for the vampires and the complications that arise with locating the antidote.
In the beginning -- I didn't understand why Knox was sooooo insistent on marrying his own kind. I also didn't stand behind Felicia's issue of "monogamy or bust." But as I got deeper into the story - I learned more about Knox and Felicia's way of thinking -- their pain and why they held steadfast to their beliefs. The romance between them grew and it was at a pace that worked well with the story.
Two thumbs up and a snap for DePaul's mental gymnastics! There were plot twists and turns that literally had me sending status updates to Goodreads hourly. Shock and awe and "What the Hell?" was in full effect!! She also takes the time to set up the world and it's characters to give readers a full picture of the world she's created. Some readers find that a turn off - but I love it with Urban Fantasy books. If I have a better understanding for how the world operates, I can buy into pretty much any crazy thing the author throws at you.
This is DePaul's first book in her Para-Ops series. Book Two, Chosen by Fate will feature Para-Ops team members, Wraith, the team's ghost, and Caleb O'Flare, the team's human psychic shaman. You can also grab a FREE read of a prequel novella titled "Wraith's Awakening."

Review: Bloodlines by Skyla Dawn Cameron
Series: Demons of Oblivion, #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author: Skyla Dawn Cameron
Pub: April 20, 2011, Mundania Press
Format: E-book; Paperback, 216 pages
Summary from Goodreads
But in the dangerous world of the supernatural, few things are ever "simple."
When a massive assault decimates the continent's population of powerful witches and warlocks, and its orchestrator has vampires being hunted down and captured, Zara realizes the tables have turned and now she'll be playing the hero. Forced to join with a smart-mouthed fellow vampire, a demonologist who's also a fan of hers, a recently widowed--and frequently brooding--warlock, and her best friend's mom, Zara's grudgingly willing to do what she can to save the day.
If only people would stop ruining all her outfits...
I'll admit, when I first started reading Bloodlines by Skyla Dawn Cameron I hated Zara. Like SERIOUSLY hated her. I'd never really met a main character that irked me. Enter Zara Lain, a 300-year old vamp. So self-centered, so self-focused. Just pure ewww! *insert hysterical giggle here* WOW - for me that's super-great-fantabulous writing! For someone to evoke that emotion from me is HUGE!
Cameron certainly takes readers on a roller coaster of emotions in Bloodlines. Because after reaching the midpoint of the book - I loved Zara. I loved her snark. Her self-centeredness. Her weaknesses. Yes she has them! But Cameron takes Zara and the reader on a path of discovery without losing the core elements that make Zara .... Zara.
"I don’t think we’ve been introduced,” I said. “My name’s Zara. I’m strong, I’m fast, and I totally kick ass. It’s great to be me...but that means right now it sucks to be you."
But I would be remiss if I didn't mention reluctant Warlock, Nate O'Conner. For those who've read Bloodlines and love Nate -- can I get a WOOT-WOOT!? Again, Cameron creates a character that is the pure antithesis of Zara and the sparks FLY!
So for a recap - I hated Zara! I loved Zara! I loved Nate and Zara and I can't frickin' wait for Book 2 - Hunter. It has a release date of August 30th!
For a special treat, Cameron is holding a pretty awesome giveaway - Hunter Prize Pack. Contest ends August 30th so click the link and check it out!

ARC Review: Deadly Sins by Kylie Brant
Title: Deadly Sins
Series: The Mindhunters, Book 6
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Author: Kylie Brant
Pub: August 2, 2011, Berkley Sensation
Format: ARC, Paperback, 352 pages
Summary from Goodreads
An unknown assassin has appointed himself judge, jury, and executioner, brutally taking out high-level human targets citywide. And the list of suspects is a sensitive one: an Iranian diplomat, a U.S. senator, and a vengeful priest. It's just the kind of case to test the resolve of tough FBI agent, Jaid Marlowe. Especially when her new partner is Adam Raiker, Jaid's former colleague and ex-lover. But that's history—and it left scars.
Determined to leave it behind them, Jaid and Adam dive into the most shocking investigation of their careers. But when Adam himself becomes a suspect, Jaid must choose between past and present. Her choice plunges them into a far-reaching, high-level conspiracy of shadows—and on the run not only from secrets and lies, but for their lives. Now, despite their history, they have only each other, and the desperate hope that love can keep them alive.
When I received the review request for Deadly Sins I was thrilled. Romantic Suspense was my "first love" of reading when I was a kid. So it seemed fitting that I would wrap myself around this story.
To put it simply - AMAZING!! Truly AMAZING! Deadly Sins is book 6 in the The Mindhunter Series, but that didn't matter. It read well as a stand alone novel. There were a few points in the plot where I wondered if more details were available in previous books, but it was mainly my curiosity rather than a flaw in the story.
The main characters, Jaid and Adam, worked well together in this story and felt like a complete role-reversal from what you would normally see in romantic suspense novels. Jaid was the FBI agent and Adam was the ex-FBI agent who was damaged. Both physically and emotionally. Typically it's the female who's still dealing with emotional issues and I love how Brant made Jaid stand out from the crowd. She strong, capable and able to hold her own. Don't get me wrong - Adam is no wimp! Even with his physical injuries, he still stands out as a man to be reckoned with.
Deadly Sins has an intricately woven plot that really keeps you guessing. Secondary characters aren't thrown into the story hap hazardously; they actually add strong richness to the story line and help to keep it moving quickly.
I was sad to see that Deadly Sins is the conclusion to The Mindhunter series. I didn't get that from the book, but only found out while preparing to write my review. Personally, I loathe starting a series at the end. It can be a total buzzkill. BUT Deadly Sins was so good, packed with action, suspense, grisly murders (and the like) -- I'm going to have to pick up Waking Nightmare, Book 1. Each book in the series focus' on a character introduced in Deadly Sins. I need the WHOLE story!
Deadly Sins releases on Tuesday, August 2, 2011. I received the ARC from the author for review.

KLB Virtual Journey: Deeper Than Midnight by Lara Adrian Review and Giveaway
Title: Deeper Than Midnight
Series: Midnight Breed, Book 9
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author: Lara Adrian
Pub: June 28, 2011; Dell
Format: Mass Market Paperback, 387 pages
At eighteen, Corinne Bishop was a beautiful, spirited young woman living a life of privilege as the adopted daughter of a wealthy family. Her world changed in an instant when she was stolen away and held prisoner by the malevolent vampire Dragos. After many years of captivity and torment, Corinne is rescued by the Order, a cadre of vampire warriors embroiled in a war against Dragos and his followers. Her innocence taken, Corinne has lost a piece of her heart as well--the one thing that gave her hope during her imprisonment, and the only thing that matters to her now that she is free.
Assigned to safeguard Corinne on her trip home is a formidable golden-eyed Breed male called Hunter. Once Dragos's most deadly assassin, Hunter now works for the Order, and he's hell-bent on making Dragos pay for his manifold sins. Bonded to Corinne by their mutual desire, Hunter will have to decide how far he'll go to end Drago's reign of evil--even if carrying out his mission means shattering Corinne's tender heart.
Hunter's story! FINALLY!! From the moment Hunter joined The Order, I lusted after his book. I wanted to know more about his background and what really made him tick! Deeper Than Midnight lays it all out and I was flat out stunned!
Lara Adrian has done a wonderful job with creating a rich and multi-layered story with the Midnight Breed series. In Deeper Than Midnight, we finally get a real look inside the horror that Dragos has created in his pursuit of world domination and the destruction of The Order.
Corinne was Dragos' captive for over 13 years and after being rescued by The Order, she longs to be reunited with her family. From their first meeting, Hunter is fascinated by Corinne, not by just her beauty, but by the prophesy that was shared with him not long before that involved Corinne. He volunteers to return her home to her family safely but that trip is cut short after a discovery is made that shatters Corinne's world and ultimately sends them both on the run.
The romance between Corinne and Hunter is ..... different. They're both "damaged" having been either exposed to or products of Dragos' madness. Their attraction builds slowly in the beginning. Hunter is hesitant because emotions/feelings are new to him; Corinne is hesitant because after so many years of torture and pain she never expected to have an opportunity to care for anyone. Throw in a lot of danger and neck-snapping and you've got the perfect mix for romance.
In perfect Adrian form, there are several continued subplots in Deeper Than Midnight. Chase aka Harvard has officially gone off the deep end. There's a scene between Chase and Elise that truly made my jaw drop! There's also the continued fight between The Order and Dragos. Things truly come to a head between the two and the members of the Order are forced to decide -- "Fight or Flight." And it makes for a totally nail biting ending.
Deeper Than Midnight Giveaway!

Review: Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward
Title: Lover Unleashed
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author: J.R. Ward
Pub: March 29th 2011 by NAL
Format: Hardcover, 489 pages
Summary from Goodreads:
Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.
When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.
As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

Yeap! I'm totally late to the game on this one. I really wanted to add this book to my Kindle collection, but the crazy pricing literally stopped me in my tracks. At the time the Kindle version was priced at $14.. or something crazy close to the Hardcover price. My cheap bone snapped. But lucky for me, my girl Penny took pity on me and loaned me her copy. Like 2 months ago. LOL Hey I said I was behind the game. So I'll keep this short and sweet :)
I was still feeling the glow of Lover Mine when I turned to page one. What did Ward cook up for Payne? Would she ever walk again? Who would she be matched with? To be honest - it took me a while to read Lover Unleashed -- like 3 weeks. *gasp* I know! I know! But it did.
I loved the pairing of Manny and Payne. But Manny seemed a bit more "loose" in this book than when he's introduced in Vishous' story. (I remembered him as up tight and anal.) The storyline for this book was "interesting." I'm going to keep it at that because there were a few twists and turns that made me go "seriously JR? Like you REALLY went there?"
Don't get me wrong - I really enjoyed the book. The romance is finally back and here to stay. I'm happy that this book didn't falter on the overall focus (Romance) after Lover Mine as was the case for a few of the previous books. But it was a bit slow for me. Butch and Vishous? Hmmm. The jury is still out on that one. I feel like Ward toned down the tension between them by about 100 degrees - but then near the end did something weird that still has me wondering. (FYI the Scene in the Bedroom.)
Fans of the BDB series will love this book. I did - but some of the "things that make me go hmmmm" kept it at a 4 star rating. I wonder what's up next for the Brothers?

Review: Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison
Title: Dragon Bound
Series: Elder Races, #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author: Thea Harrison
Pub: May 3, 2011 by Berkley
Half-human and half-wyr, Pia Giovanni spent her life keeping a low profile among the wyrkind and avoiding the continuing conflict between them and their dark Fae enemies. But after being blackmailed into stealing a coin from the hoard of a dragon, Pia finds herself targeted by one of the most powerful - and passionate - of the Elder races.
As the most feared and respected of the Wyrkind, Dragos Cuelebre cannot believe someone had the audacity to steal from him, much less succeed. And when he catches the thief, Dragos spares her life, claiming her as his own to further explore the desire they've ignited in each other.
Pia knows she must repay Dragos for her trespass, but refuses to become his slave - although she cannot deny wanting him, body and soul ...
In early May, the Twitterverse was once again a-buzz about a new book featuring a male alpha-dragon. EVERYONE was tweeting about it. EVERYONE was reading it. Of course that meant, I had to get it.
Dragon Bound is Book 1 of Thea Harrison's Elder Races Series. You've read the summary above - so here are the highlights -- there are Witches, Warlocks, Griffins, Fae, Fairies -- oh and of course one red hot dragon named Dragos. Need I say more?
I can now understand all the hub-bub about this book. The writing is phenomenal! The story line is unique and fresh and you just can't stop reading. Harrison gives readers, snark, humor and sizzling hot romance that will leave you breathless. Here's a one of my favorite lines:
I am cursed with a terminal case of curiosity," he said. "I am jealous, selfish, acquisitive, territorial and possessive. I have a terrible temper, and I know I can be a cruel son of a bitch." He cocked his head. "I used to eat people, you know."
Priceless! So if you haven't succumbed to the Twitter pressure about this book - just DO IT!! You'll love it. Trust me! Wait! There's more! Harrison has been VERY busy!
