How did a geeky douche who could write the above without a hint of irony ever get access to our national security secrets?

Far from offering any penetrating insight, the only thing that remarks like these tell me is that their authors are utterly clueless about the role played by geeky douches in all aspects of information processing, especially high-level security efforts.

What? You think that suit-and-tie straight managers are waging the infowars?

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. I think it’s the J. Edgar Hoover effect. J. Edgar insisted his agents be freshly-shaven, clean cut and wearing crisp suits and ties. They might have their foibles (like J. Edgar) but they LOOKED “professional”. It’s somewhat logical to think even workers toiling in the fetid bowels of government would be just the same way, with tech nerds having no more access to “state secrets” than the janitors. People would be shocked if they saw pictures of the people with the highest security clearances.

I don’t understand how logic gets anybody from “the tech nerds who design, operate, protect, and hack the systems that handle all the classified data” would “have no more access to it than janitors.”

Of course, I don’t think many Americans are actually capable of logical thinking any more.

  3. Well, the public doesn’t think very hard or very long about it, they just ASSUME some guy in a suit with top clearance is keeping the secrets and the nerds are just flipping switches and don’t know what it all means. I didn’t just make that up, that’s what a neighbor, a young woman, told me yesterday. I was talking to another neighbor, an older woman, about the Snowdon case, and the young lady said she thought Snowdon got into somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be and saw things he wasn’t supposed to know about. She doesn’t know what the tech nerds actually do. You hate to think that young lady is typical, but I’m afraid she is.
