All fitting within the grunge-era filmmaker's niche, ranging from nostalgia to bad relationships...  Not to forget the addition of Seann William Scott as the frantic wild card (think Joe Pesci from LETHAL WEAPON combined with JACKASS Johnny Knoxville).<br /> <br /> Even when things get semi-serious... Willis needing to pay for his daughter's wedding and Morgan reeling about his wife... it becomes a much better movie than the reviews suggest. Travolta a meandering playboy and Williams a stuffed shirt. If Travolta was the character forced into fatherhood perhaps we might have something, but Williams is so comfortably readymade for this new task, his character's arc, and revelation that he loves his kids more than his occupation, means nothing.<br /> <br /> The constantly forced wacky situations, horrible chemistry of the two leads, embarrassing misuse of CGI and uninteresting side-characters makes DOGS a completely forgettable howler.

He would take me on a world tour as a storyteller, make up a story with his character going from country to country, and each country he would enter in, he would take on the accent of that country – and he was telling the story he was making up on the spot. There were some scenes that weren’t quite right so Peter and Paul Mazursky, who was the writer of the film, not the director... Paul – who went on to a very creative film career, as you know – and Larry Tucker was his writing partner: They creatively bonded with Peter much more than Hy Averback, who was kind of an old-school television director… They sort of bypassed him… They got very creative on the set and we did scenes, which were shot and worked beautifully…<br /> <br /> Because Paul was so creative, Peter was so creative, and so a number of the scenes in the movie were… I wouldn’t say completely improvisational, but took on that quality in terms of how you worked some of the scenes. And he goes into his bedroom and he’s got his inhaler, and he’s doing his inhaler but he hears sort of inhalations other than his inhaler. When they went to shoot the scene, they gave me grass and didn’t tell me. In the vial… that they gave me… it was grass! So they’re shooting the scene, the camera’s rolling, and they say, “Just do whatever; you’re watching TV.” I’m actually staring at sixty men holding reflectors and lights and everything else, pretending to be watching a television screen with Cowboys and Indians and no sound, rolling a joint... Someone had shown me what taking a toke looked like – and I’m praying inside, going, “Oh God, I hope I do this right.” I take a couple of tokes, and then, all of the sudden it was like the top of my head transformed. The future, where overpopulation and lack of food causes the government to dole out a wafer substance called "Soylent Green," seems claustrophobically real despite some dated sets and costumes. And with actors like Heston, Joseph Cotten, Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Conners, and Edward G. Robinson, this is a gem with a twist ending that, although you might see it coming, is still quite good: if not for the fact Heston gets to scream it at the top of his lungs!

Soon he learns the easygoing lifestyle is anything but, and perhaps his uptight ways are best for him. And that's the fun part, as Sellers begins to doubt his choices with niche expressions that always keep you guessing. And while Sellers has his moments, Leigh Taylor-Young steals the movie, perfectly balancing street-smart charm and naivete. But a dated soundtrack, sounding like a game show, and lack of any solidly funny moments, keeps it at an even buzz throughout.
