Instead of centering on a mismatched relationship between father and son, sharing equally with both talents, it's all about Hank's charming flake, seeming more like a Burt Reynolds character from the seventies: he gets all the women, all the time. Meanwhile, his salesman dad and put-upon mother (Eva Marie Saint) are newly divorced, and dad loses his job. It's at the very end - after centering too much on Tom's tomfoolery around an advertising firm... all seeming like a pointless Romantic Comedy without enough of either - that, after pop falls ill, father and son bond. Then it's done, and we're left with either a really misleading film, or title, or both.

Romero's outing, "The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar," begins as a Film Noir tribute with a crooked wife of a dying rich man. Her young lover hypnotises her husband to sign over his inheritance. When he dies, he's not really gone since he never woke from the trance. Romero's in his realm with a zombie antagonist, but unlike NIGHT OF THE LIVING and DAWN OF THE DEAD, it isn't scary and the characters aren't interesting. But Dario Argento fares better with "The Black Cat," pitting forensic photographer Harvey Keitel against an eccentric wife and a black cat, whom he kills and... it, like the husband, won't die. Neither tales do the Poe sources complete justice, missing the master's mark of claustrophobic suspense, but the Argento story is at least enjoyable: aided by an important, and extremely sexy, cameo by Sally Kirkland.

Arnold travels to Columbia to find the guerrillas responsible for the explosion that killed his family, and goes from one compound to another (miraculously keeping a low profile as a six foot white man) and doing what he does best: terminate. On the peripheral is an evil CIA agent keeping an eye on our hero, resulting in <span style="font-style: italic;">two </span>explosive climaxes as Arnie, acting both tough and vulnerable, takes out each tier of villainy. </div>

A wimpy, passive guy who seems to have everything he wants, only he can't stand up for himself. Enter a confident drifter who turns his life around, and around and around. James Spader, breaking from his villainous yuppie template, is the nice guy. Rob Lowe, fresh from a real life late-eighties sex tape scandal, is the rogue helping Spader score a beautiful lady and progress in his job: but with a price. He can't shake Rob loose, and eventually is enveloped in a (very ironic) sex tape "scandal," a beating, and then a murder. The first half is Film Noiresque and builds nicely. The last half, as Lowe turns from dapper sociopath to full blown psycho, becomes your typical kill or be killed fare. </div></div>

The slugger is a big league baseball player, Michael O'Keefe, who meets a nightclub rock singer, Rebecca DeMorney. He can't hit without her and she can't sing... no matter. Yet we're to believe, with a voice only a shower could love, she's on the verge of a record deal. This unintentionally hilarious mess goes from the ball field to the nightclub and eventually, as the star-crossed lovers date and quickly marry, the bedroom. And while both leads are talented actors, they seem to be auditioning for a high school play: and a lousy one at that.

And as anti-cold-war comedies go, this makes BEST DEFENSE seem like DR. STRANGELOVE. The poster to this film has the three leads, Chevy Chase, Gregory Hines and Sigourney Weaver with their thumbs out. Chase and Hines are giving thumbs up, and Weaver's thumb is down. Enter Cynthia Gibb as a sympathetic Social Worker who initially investigates Roseanne, and then befriends her. Gibb's buried lead provides Barr the chance to be a character-actress since it's through her younger, more naive eyes that the initial story unveils. But the best moments are with Sally Kirkland as Roseanne's sidekick, both making an adventurous modern day Lucy and Ethel. Whenever Kirkland’s on screen, Roseanne's performance seems that much sharper; as does the storyline that, when straying from the duo and centering on Gibb’s workplace romance with a badly cast dolt, sinks into fluffy melodrama. And last but not least, future scream queen/then child actress Danielle Harris as the vulnerable if mopey daughter, trying to avoid embarrassment from her classmates because of her mom; if an character <i>needs</i> the most motivation here, it's her. The only square peg is frumpy Tom Arnold acting like he's a Clint Eastwood type of "real man": something wife Rosanne pushed for years until their divorce, and his separate fame after TRUE LIES. And that's just it: the film belongs entirely to Newman with some input from George Kennedy, a prisoner who first tries to break, and then worships, our proudly one-dimensional antihero. But the real chore is the chain gang, toiling beneath the scrutiny of gun-toting "bosses" and warden Strother Martin, who utters the famous line about communication, along with Morgan Woodword as a lethal gun-toting guard wearing mirror shades. The direction and editing correlate perfectly, seeming like a propaganda film for rebellion. Yet with so many recognizable actors including Dennis Hopper, Harry Dean Stanton, Joe Don Baker, and even Wayne Rogers... more give-and-take between prisoners, all surviving this hell together, would have been nice: replacing, perhaps, an overlong scene with Newman and his coughing, dying mother. A bit overrated, but still quite good.

He's discovered by a young boy, who teaches it to speak and that violence isn't good. The direction, with suspenseful, anticipating moments much like a live-action Speilberg film... as boy and robot stay clear of a cunning CIA agent... is quite good. Set in the 1950s, the G-MAN is overly paranoid for security reasons, making the only other good guy an artistic beatnik who keeps our heroes safe: till the second half as the government wants the gentle giant destroyed. Here's where the movie descends into typical Hollywood fare, depicting the U.S. Military as cliched villains wherein the budding relationship between boy and robot, the best aspect of the film, ends too soon.<br /></div>

Nothing doing. Instead there's a busy subplot (what Hitchock called a "McGuffin") of diamond thieves in Florida, where the lovable cops have assembled to celebrated Lassar's retirement; while G.W. Baily and scene-stealing sidekick Lance Kinsey strive to, once again, screw things up. Doughy-eyed Matt McCoy is a weak replacement for Guttenberg, but the main problem is that Bubba Smith, David Graf, Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsey, and Michael Winslow get lost in the shuffle. As for the last two POLICE ACADEMY films, they're not worth mentioning, much less, reviewing.

Baily<br /> <span style="font-weight: bold;">rating:</span> **1/2<br /> <br /> Michael Winslow, the guy who does the great sound effects with his voice, provides annoying rap-inspired soundtrack songs to this, a glossy fourth outing of the series that, although better than part three and sharing the same plot: the new recruits being citizens (think neighborhood watch with guns)... is hit and miss.<br /> <br /> Newbies include pre-SNL David Spade, Brian Backer as two skateboarding teens that cause trobule at the mall and are part of the COP. Bobcat Goldthwait returns for his last ride as the growling Zed, and has a love interest played by the lovely Corinne Bohrer. Zed, in his second film after going from bike riding thug to cop, has funny scenes, and plays well off enemy turned buddy/sidekick Tim Kazurinsky. <br /> <br /> G.W. Baily returns as the antagonist trying to thwart the new program, and with dopey sidekick Lance Kinsey provides some laughs... Most of the practical jokes landing on Kinsley this time around. But most of the gags, and jokes played upon them by Steve Guttenberg and company (with love interest Sharon Stone), are borrowed from the previous three films: making this a collage of what we've seen already, but an entertaining one.

But here they're back to basics, helping spaced-out Lassard (George Gaynes) keep the original Police Academy from being shut-down: thus having to compete with another academy, full of uptight, robotic cops and run by the villainous Mouser (Art Metrano). This bland mess not only rehashes the original, but using new recruits Bobcat Goldthwait, Tim Kazurisnky (both returning from part 2), and Brian Toshi, lets the former recruits, including Steve Guttenberg and the other familiar faces, become teachers: with dissapointing results. And Michael Winslow doesn't use his usually priceless voice-effects to trick people, but as a musical boom box. Snore.

And for some reason, the spectacle-wearing accident-prone Bruce Maher returns. The gargly voiced comic provides a comic relief even though this is already a comedy. He's crass and mean and tough and puts the city through hilarious hell. Yet it's Bob's real life best friend Tim Kazurinsky, as an extremely nerdy store owner, that becomes Zed's main target. <br /> <br /> Other worthy new additions include Coleen Camp as Tacklebury's tough girlfriend, who's suburban family are far from normal. While some domestics are into kissing and hugging, her dad and brother punch each other out like extras in a cowboy saloon scene, and the late David Graf's expressions are priceless. Camp's tough chick fits him like a glove. And replacing G.W. Baily's villain is Art Metrano, playing like a serious heavy within the hijinks and - along with dimwit sidekick Lance Kinsey - making a perfect foil. Kinsley, a very underrated comic actor, is the perfect victim of practical jokes. But it's Metrano's menace that bares the real brunt. The stocky actor plays it straight while the humor abounds around him. Okay, so G.W. Baily had better comedic chops; but Steve Guttenburg's prankster wrath greets a much more deserving victim with the greaseball curmudgeon.   <br /> <br /> All in all good stuff most of the way through, but the end, when the cops and robbers clash, gets tedious. But the flaws matter not. This is a terrific sequel.

Most of the beloved characters, who'd return in the franchise, are merely periphrial; while others (like a ladykiller Spanish guy) are so weak, it's no surprise they never returned. Steve Guttenberg is a relucant recruit at a low standard academy, and has to put up with jerky sarge G.W. Baily and two kiss ass recruits. There are many one-liners and hijinks, but few are all that funny. Guttenberg, with his rubber ducky charm throughout, seems too alone: rarely does Jones (Michael Winslow), Hightower (Bubba Smith), or Tackleberry (David Graf) have any worthwhile input. A few of the proceeding films not only get better, but with the addition of Bobcat Goldthwait and Lance Kinsey, funnier too: and most importantly, they rely on teamwork. </div>
