Transforming a Hobby into a Real Job

Earlier this month, I decided to close down my small business, Samantha Conner Designs. So last week, I went to Market for the final time. I went to collect my samples and displays. I wanted to say goodbye to my showroom and my sales rep. It was bittersweet. Market to me is so exciting. Everything you could imagine is sold there, people from all over the country travel here to purchase products for their stores. Home decor to apparel and everything in between.
On the front door of the DMC is a sign that says "No Children Allowed".
Maisy is a regular here-- she knows how to get around the rules :)
This week, the displays down stairs were all home decor. Lots of beautiful things to admire.
Each floor in Market is dedicated to a different type of store.  Apparel for women, men, home decor etc and my floor-- KidsWorld. Riding the elevator up to the 8th floor brought back memories of how it all began.

Building up my handmade business from a 'nap-time' hobby to a real job took almost 6 years. I started when Afton was about one year old and worked on it pretty regularly from then. It was mostly just for fun, it was a hobby that paid for itself. Then, three years ago I decided to take it further. I wondered if I could transform it from a word-of-mouth business to an Etsy shop and then to an real Accessory Line that was offered at the Dallas Market Center.

Before I could turn my hobby into a business, I would need to find help. My local business was keeping me busy. I couldn't really handle any more business on my own. So if I wanted to secure wholesale clients, I need to have some help to fill those orders. I set out to find a local manufacturer.

I went through an extensive internet search and a lot of phone calls-- and they led me to Geri Wilson at ITC in Garland. Geri was like my 'fairy godmother' of all things manufacturing. I was a self-taught designer and seamstress. My college degree was in Elementary Education. So I learned everything along the way. Sewing at home for your children is way different than designing and manufacturing a line for wholesale. Geri spent a lot of time mentoring me and helping me think about what I wanted my business to do and how to make that happen. She taught me that if you are willing to listen, people will share what they know. (So make sure you always have a notebook and pencil!)

In one of our first meetings, Geri recommended that I go check out the Dallas Market to see if my accessory line could find representation in a showroom. The DMC is closed to the general public, so in order to get in I could pay and apply for a badge to tour it as a manufacturer or I could go with a friend (either a buyer or another designer). One of my favorite children's boutique owners and my best client was kind enough to get me in the door. After that, the rest was up to me!

I remember going to Market that first time. I was alone, with a notebook and wearing one of my headbands. I went from showroom to showroom, selling myself and my accessory line. These showrooms were representing huge companies like Ralph Lauren and UnderArmor. Would there be a place for me??

At the time, I didn't even have samples, a line sheet or pricing. Crazy! And to my surprise, I had four different showrooms who were interested in representing my accessory line at Market.

After a lot of consideration, I chose the Posh Pit with Lesley Lewis. Years ago, Lesley had launched My Vintage Baby years ago and she had a great reputation for taking small lines and growing them. She was well liked by her clients and she had a lot of ideas.

It took a lot of work, but after that January market, I went home and got my accessory line- Samantha Conner Designs- ready to show in both Jackson and Dallas for the March shows. And on the first day of that March show, I had 5 new boutiques place orders. I was floored that stores wanted to carry my line. After the orders were written, the real work began. I met with wholesale fabric vendors and purchased supplies to take to Geri.

Geri and I worked on samples, patterns and the specifics of my headband designs. Her team of seamstresses got to work making my designs- filling the wholesale orders. I had 10 styles with 10 color options for each style. Each style was available on a headband or clip. I worked on photography and created a line sheet, order forms, and a look-book. Logistics had to be figured out too- shipping supplies, credit card processing, and everything behind the scenes.

Over those three years, I grew my accessory line to also include girls apparel. I designed three seasons of apparel, each season was made up of multiple collections. I sent several of my designs down the runway in the Dallas Market Center fashion show. And the highlight of my small business career was when one of my outfits was purchased by CWDKIDS catalog. Along the way, I made contacts with boutique owners, sales reps, other designers, pattern makers, seamstresses, manufacturers, textile sales reps, and more. I interviewed and hired my own contract workers. I loved the creative side and made my way through the business side.

And through it all, my little girls and my husband were there cheering me on. Sweet Afton, the faithful model. Jeff, the patient investor. And Maisy- my companion in fabric shopping, manufacturing meetings, and all things Market.

Looking back at it all now, I can see so many things I could have done better. And at the same time, I am in shock that I even pulled it off! I had created my own accessory and apparel line that was shown at the Dallas Market. I mean- I was up there on the 8th floor with Ralph Lauren! :) It was such a crazy, exciting, busy, stressful, crazy learning experience. As I was driving home from Market for the last time, I had to keep telling myself, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

Kitchen Organization & More Changes

January makes me want to get organized or at least re-arrange things. The kitchen is often the best place to start. My pantry is always in need of reorganizing. It is like laundry-- never quite done ;) A few years back, we hung a painted peg board for the pans on the inside of the pantry. It's a great use of a small space and worth sharing again, along with a few little updates I have made to the kitchen.

Use 's' clips to hold the pans against the peg board.

I moved my cook books from the top of the pantry to the counter, easier to reach. A canister of tools and this new fun pot act as book ends.

Mismatched (but coordinating!) canisters for confectioners sugar, flour, and granulated sugar.

The pot is from Hobby Lobby- new in their spring decor section. My "&"  is also from HL.

Just as good as fresh flowers, but better because you can eat them! Fruit under glass and in a basket pulls double duty as decor and a healthy snack.

The glass cabinets are perfect for white dishes, glassware and some silver. Most of the items on the top shelf are from thrifting. The white urn is my most recent. My 'regular' cabinets hold our 'regular' stuff-- plastic cups, mismatched kids plates, and an array of random coffee mugs. (It's nice to have a place to hide the practical parts of life.)

These bottles are from my sister-in-law's baby shower a few years ago. They were filled with pink lemonade from Central Market at the time they were purchased. But since they were so pretty, I couldn't bear to throw them away when the party was over. I soaked off the labels and kept them.  I like how they look all lined up in the cabinet. And I can now refill them with water, tea or lemonade when I have company over. They make a simple Crystal Light drink look fancy! (Although if you ask me in front of my guests, I will swear that it is hand-squeezed lemonade fresh from the lemon. Ha!)

Remember this project? These were glass-front drawers, but I could never keep them filled with anything very interesting. So I painted over the glass with chalkboard paint.

Are you changing or re-arranging anything this month?

On the same note as 'changing and re-arranging'-- I wanted to let you know that I am closing the doors on my small business. With the clothing aspect not working out, my heart isn't in the accessory side anymore. It is too much work, for too small of a reward. So I am shutting down my Etsy shop and my wholesale business as well.

I feel good about this decision. Balancing the small business, along with my family, and this blog has been a lot. I spent most of my time feeling like I was trying to hold onto 1,000 helium balloons at once. They were beautiful, so colorful and exciting. But those balloons kept tugging me this way and that. It was hard to keep my feet on the ground. I was always afraid that one balloon would get away from me, slip through my fingers when I wasn't looking.  So instead of being afraid of losing my balloons-- I am cutting them free. Snipping the strings and letting them go. I feel like I can see the dream of my small business floating away into the sky. It is surprisingly a peaceful sight.

I am happy that I had the opportunity to hold so much. That I was once the girl with all those balloons. But now that my hands are free, I am excited about the possibilities of what is to come.

Thank you for always being so supportive.

Growing Your Small Business

While I am taking blogging a bit 'slower' this summer, I am spending more time with my girls and any 'spare time' working on my business. Besides filling orders, I am focusing on networking and growing my brand. Do you have a small business or are you hoping to turn your blog into a business? Then we are in the same boat!

If you have been following along on Crafty Texas Girls for awhile, you know all about my small apparel and accessory business, Samantha Conner Designs. This summer, I am working on finding new ways to sell my products and spending some time learning how to better promote them!

Catch up on my past small business posts here.

After a year and a half at the Dallas Market, I am looking for new ways to reach customers, beyond just my sales rep. My hair accessories have been very successful at Market. But the clothing has been more of a challenge. I cannot seem to find a way to be competitive in my wholesale pricing when it comes to the apparel. Large manufacturers, who produce large quantities over-seas, definitely have the upper-hand in costing!

And since my business is just me and it is sewn locally here in Dallas :) I have found I can bring (you) my customers the best prices when I sell the apparel directly as opposed to wholesale at Market. For that reason, I am taking my clothing line out of the showroom for awhile and I am going to try selling it on my own. I am going to focus my sales efforts on social media and at hand-made markets over the next few months.
My mom at the Grapevine Market with me :)
I am also working with The Fashion Business Mentor, to grow my facebook presence. Meeting other designers and small business owners this past February at BlissDom  and now through TFBM has been so much fun. (**Want more details about my journey from handmade to wholesale? Check out my featured interview over at The Fashion Business Mentor by clicking here!

I love being able to share stories of success and 'lessons learned' from others who are on the same path. I think it is important to know that you can work with others who are in the same industry, another person's success doesn't take away your success. There is room, in some form or fashion, for us all.
Meeting cute customers 'face to face' makes my day!
As part of my new plan to network with other designers and grow my business through social media, I will be hosting THE REALLY BIG GIVEAWAY: {16 vendors, 16 prizes, 5 winners} right here on Crafty Texas Girls. This is my first time to organize a 'multi-vendor' giveaway. It has been a lot of work, but in the process of reaching out to others, I have met some inspiring people. I think working together, sharing and encouraging other small business owners is what it is all about!

I would love to have your support too- so please join us right here on July 10th for THE REALLY BIG GIVEAWAY! Just having you enter the giveaway and show my new small business friends "a little facebook love" would mean the world to me :) plus you might just win!

And if you are a small business owner- whether it be your blog, an etsy shop, or a dream somewhere in your heart-- I would love to hear from you! Share you link or story in the comments so that we can all encourage and support you as well!

Red, White & Blue-- With Chevron {Shop Update}

"All American" Styles by SAMANTHA CONNER DESIGNS

I am all about the nautical look for summer. Red, white, and blue. It is so summery, happy, and fun. New to the shop this summer are chic styles for all those summer holidays- Memorial Day thru Labor Day. These accessories can be worn by babies thru adults. Add a headband to a pair of crisp white trousers and a chambray shirt for an instant "patriotic" look. Or clip a rosette to a white t-shirt and jeans for an "all American" style. What girl doesn't need a little 'red, white and blue' in her wardrobe?

Perfect as gifts for your daughter, your friend, your granddaughter, your sister-- or yourself!

Family Easter & Shop SALE

I hope you all had a Happy Easter. I was a little slow on the 'bunny' preparations this year, so I ended up at Target on Saturday night. Let me tell you, if you find yourself at Target on the night before Easter, be flexible. All the plastic eggs were gone, there were no stuffed bunnies to be found, and I scored the very last bag of whopper eggs by rummaging in the 'return basket'. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do right?!

Easter was a day filled with rejoicing at church, having fun with family, and eating waaaaay to much candy.
We dyed about 3 dozen eggs in under 30 minutes. Two 3 year olds and one 7 year old-- gotta move fast!

My Design is in a Catalog! {Plus a Sample Sale}

If you have been following along, then you know that last season was my first for apparel. Since my first daughter was born I have always made hair accessories. Last year I began selling them on Etsy and wholesale through a showroom at the Dallas Market. And then in August of 2012, I debuted my girls apparel line under the same name, "Samantha Conner Designs".

The world of girls apparel is super competitive and then throw in the fact that I don't have much experience, or a company or actual employees (it's just me!)-- well it has been challenging to say the least. But despite all that, one of my outfits was picked up by the well-known children's catalog "CWDKIDS". You can imagine my excitement when the Spring 2013 catalog arrived- with my outfit in it!!

Disney World: Tips and Photos from our Vacation

We had the best time at Disney World! Have you ever been?

We planned our vacation for February because the last time we went, the parks were empty and the weather was great. This time, there were a lot more people there, but the weather was amazing. For most of the trip, we had sunshine and warm temps.

Back to Market: Part 5 of the "Dream a New Dream" Series

New to Crafty Texas Girls? This post is part of a series called "Dream a New Dream".
Take a peek and see what it is like to launch a wholesale children's accessory and apparel line.

Phew! I feel like I have just given birth, or ran a marathon, or climbed a mountain. You might remember after Market wrapped up in October, I was feeling down. I booked a great contract with a large catalog for one of the outfits in my new collection, but my other sales were small. I hit "the wall"- should I walk away and quit. Or should I give it another try?
