Dark Shadows, The Road to Bloodline: In The Twinkling of an Eye

By JUSTIN PARTRIDGE

“I liked him.” “He was very likable.” “He wanted to kill you!” “He wanted me dead. Not the same thing.”

The Road to Bloodline starts to slow down a bit with 2015’s In The Twinkling of an Eye. Considerably less action heavy than last installment, this Penelope Faith penned tale downshifts nicely with a story of a returning Jessica Griffin (Marie Wallace) and Jackie Tate (Alexandra Donnachie) tangling with a sort of soul reaper named Nate (a icy, but cooly charming Ryan Wichert). Though the story itself is not quite as exciting as the pitch, Wallace, Donnachie, and Wichert’s performances really shine through, highlighting the range’s consistently solid roster of actors. Like, as a relative neophyte (I’m now on episode 75 of the original series, watching concurrently with my listening and soon to be reading), it is nice to know that even when I don’t love the story, the cast and the sound design of these audios will at least always be worth the listen. That may be where I’m landing with In The Twinkling of an Eye.

But please don’t let my semi-apathy toward this story dissuade you! There is plenty to love about this audio! Mainly, Marie Wallace and Alexandra Donnachie! Yes, after Jessica’s harrowing attack and recovery she is back behind the bar at the Blue Whale and Jackie is still trying to sneak drinks, and failing adorably. Both women return beautifully to the roles, giving us two women who have changed since the last time we saw them and attempting to readjust to a life post-Bloodlust. I have been kind of famously chippy in these reviews about how I haven’t felt like this arc has had any real text about how the characters have moved on after that epic serial, BUT Twinkling kind of gives me some juice in that regard! This is the first time it felt like a writer was expressly detailing how characters were moving on and while it doesn’t completely commit to it, the script at least, like Degrassi, goes there.

And the story actually isn’t half bad! Given a creeping, other worldly sound design by David Darlington, this script weaves another “Dark Shadows: What If?” tale, centered around the night Jessica was attacked. As both women get to know Nate, a new handsome, yet somewhat odd man hanging about the Blue Whale and in Jessica’s day dreams, they learn that it’s his job to escort souls to their final rest and he was suppose to escort Jessica’s soul to it’s reward that fateful night. But instead, he finds himself bonded (at least I think?) onto the soul of a cyclist who died in Jessica’s stead, due to Jackie not helping him in her rush to get to Jessica after her attack. It gets...a little squffy there for a bit, which is another ding against it, but the idea is a fun one and brings out some neat chemistry between our three leads. Couple that with the inch forward character wise for the women’s current state going into Bloodline and you have at least a passable good time.

I feel bad for sounding so down on this audio, but compared to the past ones so far, this one just seems like a filler episode, graced with some pretty good performances and half a great idea. There were plenty of filler episodes on TV and it was only a matter of time until I got to one here on the audio side of things. I still completely love Jackie Tate though. I am very glad she is still around and looking to keep causing trouble going into the next major serial. And what else can I say about Marie Wallace that hasn’t already been said around here? She’s a treasure! And we treat her as such. All in all, I think In The Twinkling of an Eye is a great “one and done” listen and nothing more. But am I wrong? Come tell me in the hottest new nightspot on Facebook, The CHS Drawing Room. Let’s pop open Roger’s GOOD sherry and talk some Big Finishverse, or whatever else Dark Shadows related you want!

NEXT TIME! Deliver us From Evil! The return of that ol’ rat fink Cyrus Longworth and murder tourist Alfie Chapman! Until then Be Seeing You!

Dark Shadows, The 1973 Tapes: Beneath the Veil

By JUSTIN PARTRIDGE

The holidays have stolen my will to be cheeky so I’ll just plainly say SPOILERS AHEAD.

“There is no Heaven. Or Hell. Just this. Now.”

Happy Ghoul-idays everyone and welcome back to The 1973 Tapes! One man’s trek through the moldy, but shockingly engaging unofficial history of the town we all love. I will admit that Thanksgiving did me in a bit. I feel like it is a more draining holiday than we all would like to admit. BUT THAT SAID, I have returned to you all with a doozy of a tale to talk about! 2013’s Beneath the Veil! A skin crawling tale of murder tourists, dead Windcliffe doctors, and malicious, wandering spirits looking to cut a bloody swath through the patriarchy. All that plus Marie Wallace! This arc may have gotten off on a bit of a slow, low-key start with The House by The Sea, but Beneath the Veil kicks it up several dozen notches with a twisty tale of murder and magick.

British vacationers Alfie and Emma are on a unconventional holiday. They have come to America and taken a pilgrimage to see the nation’s most notorious serial murder sights. A bit macabre, but who are we to judge? I mean, it IS us, after all. So naturally, their car breaks down in the sleepy, not at all cursed Collinsport and even more naturally, people then start dying by the bale full. But this is just the START of the dark delights that Kymberly Ashman’s script delivers for this second installment of the arc. We will get into those here in a second, but again I have to praise this range’s accessibility. This story delves pretty deeply into the deep bench of characters Collinsport has to offer, but even if a listener didn’t know any of that Ashman’s core story of two super self-absorbed and often tacky murder tourists, given a darkly funny life by actors Simon Kent and Brigid Lohrey, getting mixed up in a town that has legit supernatural junk happening on the regular is pretty friggen fun and would be something I would imagine would hook new listeners to the appeal of the franchise.

Even better though for nerds like me, as this story doubles down on the status quo set by The House by the Sea in order to slowly grow out the range’s scope and serialization. I had been told that this arc takes to weaving in threads of things early, but little by little as the threads were attached to larger narrative quilts that were happening in the foreground (how’re these blanket related metaphors working for everybody?). While the first audio was more concerned with building a foundation, Beneath the Veil builds upward on it, very well. We see the quick return of Stephanie Ellyne’s Amy Jennings, shepherded in by none other than Carolyn and Maggie Evans themselves (both Kathryn Leigh Scott and Nancy Barrett returning to the roles and lighting up my day with their fantastic voices). We also get a quick mention of old, super-possessed-by-Nicholas-Blair, Gerald Conway, who is holed up still at Seaview, surely NOT scheming to destroy the town or the Collins family nosiree. We even get the first explicit mention of Beyond the Grave as a known quantity in this world, which is super exciting for me, Kate Ripperton’s Number One Fan. This bit proves that the range has really started to commit to serialized storytelling, so it is is fun to see that from early stories like this, knowing what I know now as a listener and fan.

Marie Wallace
But this adventure’s biggest development is the return of Marie Wallace to Dark Shadows (at least from my perspective). Though the script cheekily never outright says she is Frankenstein woman Eve, it does heavily hint at it, as she is credited under the name and serves as a flesh vessel for the newly awakened Danielle Roget, who was reintroduced after Conway blundered into Seaview. Wallace’s cooing, icy performance is a constant boon to the audio as she latches onto the young couple, seeking to take over Emma’s body and leave Collinsport. It is a little disappointed that Brigid Lohrey gets to be the final voice actor of Danielle (even though she is truly stellar throughout the audio! Even before the possession!) as Wallace’s take is truly spine-tingling is a material, almost warm creepiness, but I will take what I can get really. Any time any original actor show up in the booth for these and gives it their all, I am going to be happy. Nobody has really phoned it it just yet, though I don’t expect any would. They are all class.

Anyway, woolgathering aside, I really, really dug Beneath the Veil. Not just for it’s endless twists as this thing has one of the crazier endings, The Tony and Cassandra Mysteries notwithstanding, I have heard yet. But for it’s being emblematic of this range really trying to build something, beyond just being good solid horror stories with a well known licence behind them (though it DOES do that pretty damn well on it’s own). Kymberly Ashman and directors Darren Gross, David Darlington and Jim Pierson really nail this sophomore effort, by keeping it simple and creepy while at the same time slowly building a weird corner of the Big Finishverse that fans both new and old could dig into. Prequels aren’t usually supposed to be this fun, but I will be damned if I’m not having a blast with these. And I still have a little over half a dozen left to go! It is a Collinsport Christmas come early! IA! IA! CTHTHULU FLAGTEHN! Erm, sorry, I just get excited.

NEXT TIME! The Enemy Within! The return of Cyrus Longworth, Action Demon Child! Some Jennings family intrigue! Christopher Freaking Pennock! It should be a fun time. Be seeing you.

Rondo Awards: CHS nominated for Best Blog/Website

By WALLACE McBRIDE

You just think you love DARK SHADOWS.

And you probably do. It's not a television show that will meet you halfway ... if you're a fan of DARK SHADOWS, you've absolutely made a significant investment of your life to this sprawling, 1,225-episode program. Our fans make Trekkies look sedate by comparison.

Compared to Patrick McCray, though, you're a total piker.

Yes, that's a bold statement, given the broad spectrum of DARK SHADOWS fans that have interacted with this website over the years. Some of these folks were lucky enough to hang around the NYC studios where the series was taped between 1966-1971. Others were involved with organizing festivals and conventions years later, publishing fanzines or helping to produce audio dramas that extended the narrative of a series that loved decades after it was taken off the air. These are passionate, driven people who have been at the DARK SHADOWS game for a long, long time.

I've even managed to make a name for myself in recent years as one of the show's loudest, strangest cheerleaders. But: When I have a question about DARK SHADOWS, Patrick McCray is the guy I ask. He's seen the series from start to finish (and one time from finish to start) more times that I can count, and can address nuances of continuity, story, dramatic mechanics and theme in ways that are always illuminating. His B game is better than more people's A, and he's contributed to this website over the years with the kind of commitment and discipline that's usually only accompanied by a paycheck. There have been days since I launched this website in 2011 where I've contemplating shuttering the historical society's doors, but Patrick's dedication keeps me coming back.

In 2012, The Collinsport Historical Society was named "Best Blog" of the year by The Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards. It feels ridiculous that we were even nominated, and downright surreal to have actually won. We've been nominated every year since in that same category, which somehow feels nicer to me than having actually won. Over the weekend the CHS was nominated again for "Best Website or Blog" of 2017, alongside such sites as birth.movies.death, Graveyard Shift SistersBloody DisgustingDread Central and Tim Lucas' Video Watchblog.

My instinct this year was to thank the Rondos for their continued recognition and move along with my life. Just seeing the CHS mentioned with those other people is scary. It seems best to keep my head down and hope nobody figures out that I was invited to this party in error. I mean, holy hell. You guys know I spend my free time making Muppet Show/Dark Shadows mashups right?

Which brings me back to Patrick. When we got our Rondo back way back when, it was a single award that's now sitting in a display case in the cluttered nest I refer to as my "office." And I think Patrick deserves to have one of these. So, instead of pushing you to vote for the CHS this year, I thought I'd share a sample of my ballot ... which includes Patrick McCray in the write-in category for "best writer" of 2017. There are 29 categories, and you don't have to vote for them all. But I'd love it if you voted for Patrick this year.

As usual, this year's winners will be determined by votes from the public. And that means you. Readers are asked to select winners from this year's nominees and e-mail your selections to awards taraco@aol.com.

All voting is by e-mail only. One vote is allowed per person. Every e-mail must include your name to be counted. All votes are kept confidential. No e-mail addresses or personal information will be shared. Votes must be received by midnight, April 8, 2018.

You can read the full list HERE, and below you can find my personal ballot.

First Look: IN THE TWINKLING OF AN EYE

"In the Twinkling of an Eye" cast Alexandra Donnachie and Ryan Wichert, and writer Penelope Faith.
If you haven't listened to DARK SHADOWS: BLOODLUST yet, let me go ahead and spoil something for you: Marie Wallace turns in a terrific performance as Blue Whale proprietor Jessica Griffin. It's her easily her most low-key DARK SHADOWS performance, but still managed to be one of the tale's most likable (and relatable) characters.

Wallace (and Jessica Griffin) will return this year in the upcoming DARK SHADOWS audiodrama "In the Twinkling of an Eye."

Here's the official synopsis from Big Finish:
Fully recovered from her hospital stay and back behind the bar of The Blue Whale, Jessica Griffin welcomes Nate, a stranger in town claiming to be ‘just passing through’.

But how come he knows so much about her and why is he so keen to lure her back to the house she hasn't set foot in since the death of her husband?

And he really is so very familiar…

In the photo at the top, actor Ryan Wichert is holding a copy of Wallace's memoirs, "On Stage and In Shadows," which features introductions by Ruth Buzzi and Jonathan Frid. If you haven't read it, you really should.

"In the Twinkling of an Eye" is among six new DARK SHADOWS audiodramas slated for release in 2015. The list of titles include "Panic," "The Curse of Shurafa," "Deliver Us From Evil," "And Red All Over," and "Tainted Love," which are all available for pre-order from Big Finish.

Scenes from the DARK SHADOWS CRUISE

Photos from the DARK SHADOWS CRUISE began to pop up online over the weekend, presumably about five minutes after the travelers returned home from the Caribbean jaunt. I wasn't able to attend, so can't say much about the event. Luckily, Kathryn Leigh Scott has updated her blog to share her thoughts about last week's adventure. LINK

Marie Wallace, Jerry Lacy return for DARK SHADOWS: BLOODLUST

Big Finish has added two more original DARK SHADOWS cast members to the upcoming serial, BLOODLUST.

Jerry Lacy and Marie Wallace
Marie Wallace is reprising her role as landlady Jessica Griffin. Jessica arrived in Collinsport in "Kingdom of the Dead" to support her son after his wife's death.

“Ed’s wife, Susan, died,” says co-producer Joseph Lidster, “so he’s a broken man. Luckily, his mother, Jessica, has returned to Collinsport to run the Blue Whale. Jessica's the town gossip - she knows everything about everyone. Or so she thinks…”

Dark Shadows veteran, Jerry Lacy, is also returning, reprising his role as the Reverend Isaiah Trask.

“Trask is a defeated man,” says co-producer David Darlington. “He’s lost his faith, and is often to be found propping up the bar in the Blue Whale. But where does he go at night ...?”

Could Jessica's gossip make her a target for the killer? Could Isaiah be meting out justice on those he believes to be sinners?

You can hear Jessica and Isaiah introducing themselves here, and they've been added to the extensive cast gallery here.

Dark Shadows: Bloodlust is a 13-part miniseries released in January and February 2015. It's available to pre-order here.

Eve returns in BENEATH THE VEIL

Well, THIS certainly got my attention.

When Big Finish announced the next slate of DARK SHADOWS audio dramas, it appeared they were setting off into uncharted waters. A handful of original cast members were attached to these episodes, but there were also many new names and faces involved. If BF wanted to experiment with the formula by creating new heroes and heroines -- characters free from the shackles of existing continuity -- I was willing to go with them. It would have been a risky venture, for sure, but the company has earned the benefit of the doubt.

That being said, I was relieved to see the return in this episode of DARK SHADOWS stalwarts KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT and NANCY BARRETT, not to mention MARIE WALLACE in one of my favorite roles: Eve. The early details of the upcoming episode, BENEATH THE VEIL, simply mentioned that a serial killer had arrived in Collinsport. Eve's past life as French maniac Danielle Roget almost gaurantees she's somehow involved.  Here's the official summary:
Alfie Chapman and Emma Finney, a young English couple, are on a road trip, travelling across America. When their car breaks down, they find themselves having to stay overnight in the small town of Collinsport.

And on that night, people start dying.

As Alfie and Emma become acquainted with the residents, they discover that there's more to the sleepy little town of Collinsport than they first thought.

But will they discover the truth behind the murders before they become the next victims?
BENEATH THE VEIL is scheduled to arrive in July. You can listen to an audio trailer for the story at the company's website, and look for an interview here with the episode's author, KYMBERLY ASHMAN, in the coming weeks.

COLLINWOOD COCKTAILS: The Crazy Jenny

INSANITY. n. mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior.

Are those voices in your head getting annoying? Looking for a reason to set something on fire that won't end in your immediate arrest? Looking for an exotic mixed drink that doesn't include many elements found in nature? Well, you're in luck! I've got a drink that will help you with all three of those problems!

Introducing THE CRAZY JENNY, a mixed drink loaded with tasty, tasty symbols of Collinwood's favorite pyromaniac, Jenny Collins. Much like committing murder, THE CRAZY JENNY is remarkably easy, but you'd better be prepared to live with the long-term consequences of your actions. Because Jenny will kick your ass so hard that your great-great-grandchildren will feel it.

Here are the ingredients:
  • A 50 ml "mini" bottle = 1.7 oz EARLY TIMES "FIRE EATER" cinnamon-flavored whiskey
  • A 50 ml "mini" bottle = 1.7 oz 99 BANANAS liquor
  • A 50 ml "mini" bottle = 1.7 oz WHALER'S "KILLER" COCONUT rum
  • Seltzer water
  • 2 sugar cubes
  • FIRE!!!!
Balance an absinthe spook over the mouth of a glass and place two cubes of sugar on the cradle. Slowly pour all three bottles of booze over the sugar cubes, wetting them. Once you've emptied the bottles, carefully set the cubes on fire. Keep a bottle of seltzer water on hand, and use it to slowly extinguish the flame as the sugar cubes melt. Stir the contents, using the seltzer to water the drink down (and I'd recommend using a LOT of seltzer.) Next, clear your schedule for at least three days and hang on to your proverbial nuts.

Marie Wallace recovering from Oct. injury

Marie Wallace (who played Eve, Crazy Jenny and other characters on DARK SHADOWS) was injured in October during a performance of "THE LAST ROMANCE" at the Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury, Conn.

Wallace was injured in a fall immediately after a stage blackout at the end of the play's first act when she lost her footing in the darkness and fell down the stage stairs, according to The Republican American. Last night on her Facebook page, actress Kathryn Leigh Scott updated fans on Wallace's condition:

Marie Wallace, our beloved Dark Shadows friend, suffered a broken shoulder and serious injuries after an horrific fall during the performance of her play. I’ve been in touch with her and wanted to pass along her message: “Please tell our Facebook friends and fans that I’m recovering very well, and feeling stronger each day. I appreciate all their loving and healing thoughts. There’s no room for flowers here in rehab but I would certainly appreciate a note or card.”

Marie Wallace injured in Conn. stage production

Ron Crawford and Marie Wallace in THE LAST ROMANCE.
Marie Wallace (who played Eve, Crazy Jenny and other characters on DARK SHADOWS) was injured Saturday night during a performance of "THE LAST ROMANCE" at the Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury, Conn.

Wallace was injured in a fall immediately after a stage blackout at the end of the play's first act. Wallace lost her footing in the darkness and fell down the stage stairs, according to The Republican American. While sympathy notices have begun to appear on the actress's Facebook page, no formal announcement has been made about her condition.

The production launched the theater's 22nd season, which began Oct. 18.

UPDATE: Marie Wallace posted a comment on Facebook this afternoon about her injury:
"Thank you to all my wonderful friends and fans who have sent me so many healing and loving messages. I'm in great hands in a New York hospital with a great surgeon who will be operating on my smashed right shoulder this afternoon. I know all your prayers will help to make it a speedy recovery."
