What a joyful read The Flower Garden by Renee Kurilla has proven to be! I just want more books in this graphic novel or comic book style for young readers like this! BookBairn and I loved reading this together - she could have read it all by herself, and I’m sure she will pick it up to do so, but reading together is such a joy!

AD: Sponsored Post We finally have our hands on more Princess in Black! We started reading this book series some time ago and had collected the first three in the series but somehow I had managed to buy different releases and they were different sizes so did not sitting nicely together on BookBairn's shelf. As any bookworm knows mis-matching series sits uncomfortably on our shelves. But thanks to spotting the box set of the first six books in the series on Books 2 Door, we now have a matching set!

It's been a while since I did a Mighty Girls book selection round-up and I've had a stack of books sitting in a pile by the desk for so long that I'm feeling guilty that BookBairn hasn't had much a chance to read them as I've been hogging them. So without further ado, here are some new (and old because I want to highlight again how good they are) books starring mighty girls!
Isadora Moon is one of our favourite characters: she’s half-fairy and half-vampire little girl who has lots of fun adventures with her little pink rabbit sidekick. There are now a whole series of books to choose from about Isadora and her adventures but this one 'Isadora Puts on a Show' is definitely a mighty girl favourite. It tells the story of the time Isadora was asked to participate in the vampire show and she struggles to choose what talent to share. Deep at heart she's a ballerina but vampires don't like ballet and she's scared to be her true self in case they don't like it. When she meets a fellow half-vampire half-human friend, she realises that with a bit of confidence and a friend at your side you can take the stage by storm! These illustrated chapter books are the perfect first read aloud for preschoolers who will love Isadora’s adventurous spirit and quiet playfulness. The illustrations are a mix of black, white and shades of pink and are so engaging they really bring the characters to life. But basically for any little readers ready for a longer adventure these books are just so fun.
Another amazing chapter book series that we love so much is the new Kitty series. Kitty is awesome: she’s a superhero girl with cat-like powers and the ability to speak to animals! She’s a mighty little girl who helps others, solves mysteries and is full of compassion. BookBairn just loves them - and we can't wait for two new releases later this year! The illustrations are fabulous and the colour palette of black and orange is so striking. A brilliant new series for any mighty little girl reader!
This story is a lot more than just an amusing title! It’s one of our all-time favourite books and Princess Daisy is a lot more than your regular princess. She uses the evidence of all the strange and frightening things that are happening in her town to conclude that they have a dragon problem. So her father, the king, sends away for some knights to slay the dragon. But these knights “are twits, it’s plain to see” at least to Daisy it’s plain to see! But Daisy’s father says she must stay safe in her tower. The knights, the nincompoops that they are, fail in various ways but there is a fourth knight, a strange knight - with no armour and riding a cow. But it turns out that the dragon is just a baby - all she wanted was some milk, a cuddle and a book. Daisy, it turns out, is much better at soothing dragons than the nincompoop knights. But of course, Daisy and the Dragon and the knights all live happily ever after. The rhymes are perfect for reading aloud and they roll off the tongue so well. It also has great fun illustrations that bring the story to life with little extras and humour beyond the words of the story - and a little hidden snail on many pages! And from this story comes one of my all time favourite picture book quotes:
Girls are clever, tough and bold
And brave and strong and true
We’re just as good as boys, you know
We can be heroes too!
Such an empowering message of a princess who is a bit mightier than some of the old-fashioned ones.
Written in the most wonderful rhyme and packed full of humour and fun, l love reading this one aloud! From Maker Chick to Baker Chick to Soccer Chick and Rocker Chick, all the chicks in town are horrified by and standing up to the “No Chicks Allowed” rule! Nerdy Chick isn’t standing for this senseless rule and won’t let it stand in their way to achieving her dreams of launching a rocket into space! She turns to her fellow chicks for help. And together they lift each other and prove once and for all that chicks are truly out of this world! The illustrations aren’t the kind that I’m usually drawn to but we love the bright colours and cartoon/comic style. I am totally won over by them! Showing you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. And you shouldn’t judge a Chick by her feathers! I cannot say how much love I have for this book!
This is a book we have been raving about since we first read it. When a terrible beast starts roaming the forest in search of tiny creatures to make a big bowl of monster soup, Billy and her Fatcat cannot let him get away with it. He's got boil in a bag bunnies, spicy mice and grated hedgehog all on his list but can Billy outwit this ferocious beast and save the inhabitants of the forest? And in the sequel, Billy and the Dragon, Billy must rescue Fatcat from the clutches of a dragon, but perhaps all isn't quite what it seems! Packed full of humour, fun illustrations and a heroine who stashes doughnuts in her hair for emergencies these are brilliant new fables that will empower as well as make you giggle. And BookBairn loves them!
This is a book that we borrowed from the library and enjoyed it so much that I bought a copy for BookBairn and I'm sure we will be going back for the sequels in this series too. Stopping monsters is no job for a prim and perfect princess in pink, even if that is how everyone expects a princess to behave. So when trouble calls in her kingdom, Princess Magnolia transforms into her alter ego and confronts the monsters as
The Princess in Black. All the time keeping up the pretence of her pretty in pinkness for the subjects of her kingdom. I like the way this turns the princess genre on it's head and gives her a superhero type quality with her secret identity. This is a highly illustrated chapter book to so there is lots in the illustrations to deepen children's understanding of the story as well as keep them focussed whilst you read the slightly longer chapters aloud. It's not too long though - we still usually read it in one or two sittings! A lovely one for a mighty girl princess.
You may have come across Molly Rogers Pirate Girl in picture book form so for little readers who already love the character this early chapter book is a little gem of a book to continue the adventure. In this new story, Molly Rogers comes to the rescue of the beautiful Monkey Skull Island which is under attack from Captain Firebeard. Molly way be small, but she's out to show just how smart and fierce she is and to teach old Captain Firebeard a lesson. Packed full of fantastic illustrations that are dripping with detail and humour, this is such a great little chapter book for young readers to dip their toe into slightly longer reading sessions, or for helping them to recall previous events over multiple sessions. Molly is a super character to enjoy too - it's not often you see such a mighty girl pirate and I love that she is leading the way for mighty girls on the high seas!
This is such an important message for young readers about standing up for yourself! Coralie longs to join the circus to be with her new friend, Lion, but the Man in the Big Hat says her tricks (which in actual fact are mighty impressive) aren't good enough. The only opportunity he will give her is as the human cannonball! And when she performs that to standing ovation from the crowd, the Man in the Big Hat only has criticism for her and tries to send her packing. However, with Lion and the rest of the circus on her side, Coralie learns that the power of friendship is the biggest prize of all. The illustrations in this book are just fabulous and will have little readers gasping in awe at the feats that Coralie can perform. The characters, with the exception of the Man in the Black Hat, are warm and friendly and welcome young readers into the story. You could say that this is a very early feminist picture book about the fight against the patriarchy, or you could just take it at face value and enjoy the fun story and colourful cast of characters. But either way it's a wonderful read for mighty girls.
Erin is fascinated by the legend of Black Rock; she knows that it is huge and dark and spiky, and is said to destroy any boats that come near it! But are those tales really true? Erin is determined to find out, so sneaks aboard her mother's fishing boat and embarks on an adventure towards the Black Rock. When she falls overboard, she soon discovers that though huge, dark and spiky, Black Rock also has a gentler side. And much more beneath it's surface. The illustrations in this book are truly spectacular and I love the mature graphic style that is more reminiscent of graphic novels than picture books, lending even more gravitas to the story. With a gentle environmental message, and a mighty girl at the centre (as well as a mother who is a fisherwoman - not a profession you usually see role modelled by women) this is a perfect might girl read that will utterly enchant.
Eilza Jane is like most newly-turned four-year-olds, she wants a pet for her birthday. But no ordinary pet will do for this feisty heroine. She wants a dinosaur! So her parents lovingly take her to the Dinosaur Department Store to search out the perfect prehistoric pet to bring home. Except Eliza Jane sneakily has other ideas. If little ones carefully watch the illustrations as this romping rhyming unfolds, they will notice what Eliza is up to! In fact, there's even a clue on the cover. As I just mentioned the illustrations in this book are absolutely fabulous: vibrant, colourful and full of a whole cast of hilarious dinosaurs too. And the rhymes make it a joy to read aloud. And Eliza Jane isn't a character to mess with! Such a fun book!
The latest in this series (I did not know there was a whole series and am heading straight over to my library catalogue to request them all!), princesses certainly don't need rescuing! Princess Jasmine, isn't really a perfect in pink sort of princess. In fact, she can't wait to prove to her parents and the kingdom that there's more to princesses than pretty dresses and waiting around for a prince! She wants to run in the kingdom Cross Country Race, but it's the same day as her big birthday ball! Can she run fast enough to get back in time to do both?! Maybe with the help of a fairy godmother and some new shoes (you see which fairytale this one is based on) she can do it. Or maybe her fairy godmother has a trick up her sleeves just to make sure that Jasmine really believes in herself and that is magic enough? This rhyming story is joyful to read aloud and such a fun twist on a traditional Cinderella story. BookBairn loves this one and will be delighted to learn that there's a whole series of mighty girl princess books to try!
Mighty girl power comes in all shapes in sizes! Mirabelle and Meg are twins, and though they look identical (except for different coloured dresses to prevent readers muddling the two up), they are absolutely not the same! Their mother and father are famous acrobats and while Mirabelle loves being topsy turvy and upside down, continuing the family legacy, Meg quietly forges her own path. Meg is afraid of heights and therefore doomed never to be an acrobat, but is Mirabelle as fearless as she seems? And perhaps it takes more than a bit of topsy turvy antics to put on a true performance? A lovely story about celebrating sisters, differences but also the quieter introverted character: this is a lovely story for BookBairn who is no acrobat but more of a bookish sort. I love the crips primary coloured colour palette and find this story truly enchanting!
Ok, so let's start by saying that the illustrations in this book are like no-other. The layering of all the flora and fauna in hues to green, yellow and orange is a visual feast. It's a world your little readers will certainly want to explore. And why not explore it with Min: a very tiny girl embarking on a huge adventure! Inviting your readers to step inside Min's magical and miniature world to find out that to be tiny in a world much bigger than you, you absolutely have to be mighty! And Min is about to embark on a very big adventure. I just love everything about the way this story has been crafted. It's gentle and mighty, beautiful and strong and will leave a lasting impression on young readers.

Welcome to a new feature on the blog! Once every month I want to highlight a book which is absolutely spectacular! A short review with lots of photos so that you can appreciate it's beauty across the pages. So without further ado...
This is a spectacularly magical and exquisitely beautiful folk tale about love and freedom.
Starbird’s songs weave the richest dreams and delight to all who hear his song, so the Moon King wants to give Starbird as a gift to his newborn daughter. Capturing Starbird and trapping him in a cage, Starbird sings for the little princess but over time the magic and life in his voice begins to fade away. So the princess, much to the dismay and wrath of her father, sets the Starbird free. Starbird flees and tries to hide from the Moon King, gliding through different habitats around the world and hiding amongst some spectacular creatures. But he cannot evade the Moon King forever.
And what follows is perhaps one of the most profound lessons about captivity and freedom in picture book form. With a feeling of a timeless myth, this original fable is utterly beautiful. The exquisite use of silver foil throughout and intricate illustrations make it a true work of art. This is a beautiful book for adults and children alike. (And it’s going on to my, not the kids, picture book shelf!)

We are inundated with wonderful space stories at the moment as we approach the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landings! Space offers us the opportunity to wonder so it's a fantastic premise for many great stories of adventure, exploration, science, creativity and ingenuity. And that's what we have gathered here for you in this post - six spectacular space adventures!
Suzy Orbit is a mighty girl astronaut, inventor and engineer! You know we love a
Mighty Girl book and Suzy is a wonderful example of quietly but steadily saving the day. Suzy lives with her boss, Captain Gizmo in a space station on a dusty corner of the moon. Captain Gizmo is constantly receiving SOS messages from Earth about impending aliens and as the situation changes he keeps ordering new equipment to sort things out. But Suzy, quietly says she can build it, make it, create it. And with every order Captain Gizmo makes something isn't quite right. When the Aliens reach the Moon Space Station, it turns out they aren't invading but actually trying to warn Earth about a meteoroid storm. But do they have a top-of-the-range meteoroid blaster and can they get one in time? Suzy to the rescue! She's built the perfect ship with everything they could need! A wonderful story about aliens, Space and mighty girls but also about over-consumption, about creativity and ingenuity! This is such a fun-filled book too! The illustrations are bright and cheerful and I love the alien characters. But best of all through the changing illustrations you can see Suzy's ship taking shape. Lots of fun and perfect for Space fans!
Molly the moth (have you ever heard of a book with a moth as the main character - just one of the many reasons to love it!) has always been told that someone as small as her can never make it to the moon. Yearning for adventure, she helps her mother look after her siblings (larvae) during the day and trains hard for her space mission by night. And soon she is ready to blast off. But perhaps the moon is further than even Molly believed. First she gets as far as a lightbulb, but that's not the moon. Then she makes it as high as a street lamp, but that's not the moon. Then she gets confused but a lighthouse, that's not the moon either. Along the way she is belittled and made to feel too small for such a feat. Will she ever make it? And show everyone that size doesn't matter when you have a big dream? I think you can probably guess! With adorable illustrations and the underlying message of reaching for your dreams, this is a wonderfully heart-warming and gently encouraging story.
Inspired by the childhood of real-life astronaut, Chris Hadfield, this new picture book is a beautiful depiction of a little boy fascinated by Space and longing to become an astronaut. As many children do! Young Chris in the story is a 'very important and very busy astronaut' so when his Dad says it's time for bed he says "sorry no can do!". An astronaut's work is never done. But when he does finally turn out the lights, Chris finds himself afraid of the scary aliens that lurk in the dark. And he sneaks into his parents bed. But he can't keep sleeping there - he needs to conquer his fear. When he watches in awe the Apollo 11 Moon Landing he realises that if he is to achieve his dream of visiting Space he must come to terms with the
darkest dark. A wonderful depiction of childhood fears and dreams, with some truly spectacular illustrations, this picture book is a lovely one to read with young readers to commemorate the Moon Landings.
A true Space adventure story, this fun and witty picture book is the story of a
field trip to the Moon. A whole class of children on a yellow school bus inspired spaceship to the Moon (what kind of crazy teacher got that trip through risk assessment?!). For one student, her curiosity gets her separated from the rest of the class and she takes the opportunity to get her crayons out and look back to Earth and create a beautiful picture. But she falls asleep and finds that her whole class have returned to Earth. She's all alone on the Moon! Or is she? Find out what happens whne you reach out to those that are different from us and greet them with an open pack of crayons! And also does she get back to Earth or is she stranded on the Moon forever? A Very fun story with fabulous illustrations and a clever perspective and use of colour! (But seriously, what kind of teacher doesn't do approx 45,813,901 headcounts on a trip to the Moon?!)
Rocket is a science-mad stargazing, astro-aspiring little chatterbox and she's determined to be the greatest astronaut space-traveller that ever lived. And she is always looking up. Unlike her brother, Jamal, who is always looking down into his phone. 'Did you know? Did you know? Did you know?', she's always trying to engage her older brother in her space chatter. So when her mum makes Jamal take Rocket to the park to spot the Phoenix Meteor Shower, she hopes he will look up at the stars with her. Such a fantastic celebration of curiosity and reminding us to
look up, you can't help but be infected with Rocket's energy and passion! We certainly love her!
This is one of the cutest bedtime story books (and makes me feel like we need to read the others in this 'Goodnight' series):
"It's time for bed, come on inside.
We'll keep the curtains opened wide
and watch the starlight sparkling bright.
Let's make a wish and say goodnight."
Two little boys say goodnight to a whole series of space things until their dreams blur reality and they climb aboard a rocket and head for the Space Station where their dad is working. And together they explore Space. It's so sweet and the illustrations are adorable! This is a perfect first Space story and wonderful for very little one's bedtimes.
I hope that has you wanting to blast off into a space adventure! And if it's got your little one excite about Space why not check out our blog post of the most fascinating Non-Fiction Space books that we've read?!

There are lots of wonderful books about nature being released at the moment - perhaps it's because we get to spend more time out doors now that the weather is improving! But also it's because in 2015, a group of authors raised concerns over the loss of around 50 words relating to nature and the countryside from the Oxford Junior Dictionary. Whilst the dictionary is updated to reflect word usage, it means the removal of these words more than likely reflects a decreased engagement with the natural environment. So here are six great new books to get you back talking about nature!
If you are looking for a book whose illustrations will literally take your breath away, then you have to get your green fingers on a copy of The Green Giant. It is truly truly spectacular. It tells the story of a young girl, Bea, who is visiting her grandfather in the countryside, far from the big grey city that she lives in. And she finds it rather slow and boring, until she finds a new and unexpected friend in the Green Giant who is hiding away on an old greenhouse. A giant made entirely of plants! The giant opens Bea's eyes to the wonders of nature and the magic of greenery and together they set off on a mission to make the city (and the world) a greener place. This fits with everything I want to share with the bairns about being concerned about our environment but in a way that little children can understand. And the illustrations are so striking - the contrast between the grey city and the greenery is incredibly poignant. It's just beautiful.
It's hard to imagine a book that captures the beauty of nature better than the wonderful images created through the collages of Clover Robin. Her artwork is just sensational. With beautiful intricacy as well as sweeping landscapes it really is a marvel. I love the scenes of the rabbits hopping in the fields, the shells on the seashore and the swallows sailing across the skies. With lyrical accompanying poems as well as facts about how the leaves change colour, migration and baby animals, there really is a lot to treasure in this marvellous
book. This beautiful book (in prose and in illustration) addresses that loss of language and will help to bridge the gap by not only sharing all these wonderful words with children but also encouraging an enthusiasm about the natural world. Taking you on a Walk Through Nature, this book is a wonder! Clover's books about birds and bugs are also spectacular! (We reviewed them here.)
If you are a fan of picture books, like us, then you will probably be familiar with the beautiful artwork of Britta Teckentup. Her books are truly spectacular visual wonders (in fact they feature in over twenty blog posts that I have written - here's a favourite!). And it will come as no surprise to you that she has done it again! Her newest in a series of nature books that explore the world around us, Sea, takes you deep beneath the waves explore that beautiful sea! Britta Teckentrup has created a magical world for little readers. It is completely enchanting. Using an intricate collage style, rainbow-hues and luscious colours, she has created a colourful array of sea creatures from tiny seahorses to giant humpback whaled. Every page is delight! The die-cuts throughout the book engage little fingers with exploring the pages. Patricia Hegarty poetically tells the story of the importance of our oceans. In rhyming couplets she brings to life the mesmerising story of the world beneath the waves. Beautiful and Spectacular.
Little Bear has just woken up from his long winter sleep. As he gently steps out on to the snow around him the world seems vast and silent. He nestles a little stone into his fur - perhaps he empathises with it seeming lost and alone? - and together they set off on adventure to explore the emerging Spring world and make new friends. Such a lovely lyrical story with some of the most enchanting illustrations we have come across, you will just fall in love with bear. So much so that you'll be reading him all year round - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter!! Such a breath-taking book with incredible landscapes. Such a joy to read!⠀
“We’re the Nature Girls! We must explore. We pack our bags, we’re out the door...”
This book is such a delight and brings back lots of memories of reading Madeline as a child with its little girls in straight lines (though not whilst adventuring obviously!) and rhythmic rhyming prose. The bold Nature Girls are ready for whatever nature throws at them. In the sequel to The Weather Girls’, The Nature Girls pack their bags and start their journey exploring all sorts of different natural habitats around the world. From swimming to the depths of the oceans, sailing the seven seas, sledging across the Arctic tundra, camel rides across the desert, climbing trees in the jungle and more, these girls really do explore all that the great outdoors has to offer. Bringing to life all the wonderful corners of the natural world your little ones will want to follow this bright group of girls on their adventures. With stunning illustrations and lots of fun nature facts, this rhyming picture because one that you read over and over again.
As you know we live very very close to the Seaside so we love books that are set on the shore. And this one is a delight because it's a search and find book (check out more search and find books in this blog post!) and both kids enjoy looking at it together! Along the bottom of each page is a glossary/seek-and-find list and there additional, more challenging questions in the illustration, which makes it perfect for both children as The Wee Page Turner can manage the simple words and BookBairn the more challenging parts. This is great as there's room for growth in this book meaning that your little one won't get bored of it too quickly! But most importantly in this seek-and-find book is that the illustrations are enchanting. Sebastien Braun illustrates the Can You Say It Too? series for the same publisher and we love those books too. I find his style so engaging which is exactly what you want from these sorts of books. The focus on British wildlife is also wonderful for us (it was made in collaboration with the National Trust) as the bairns can relate to the creatures she sees from terns to surfers to mussel shells to limpets and oystercatchers (though some of the ocean wildlife like porpoises and whales are a bit out of our viewfinder - and I hope we don't come across any grass snakes though I remember seeing one in my garden as a child!). So not only can we look together at this book we can take what we have spotted (and learned the words for) and seek-and-find them when out for seaside strolls!
Happy exploring!
