lolchitecture 2 systems

Also...
the reason the system sux is because no one really knows what design is
we think the system provide us with a fucked up education.
actually we do not educated ourselves enough. we do not want to experience stuff. we do not think deeply enough. we do not analyse. we miss out so much.
Everywhere the system will suck because we are bringing around the same mindset as we go about. We do not enjoy our design enough. Our design does not seem to be our design, but someone elses. We do work but we do not think enough. We blame the system but we are the system ourselves. We are too contented to do just 'enough'
The system only sucks if we are uneducated and unintelligent...
we need the courage to use education and intellect and free our mind
It will not be done in one semester, but this will be our only time in our lives able to do anything we want.

lolchitecture

What is?

enough of corporate
enough of going through motion
enough of sketchup
enough of post rationalisation
enough of form making
enough of rehashing ideas
enough of copy pasta
enough of invented technologies
enough of SAFE
enough of poly
enough of 'design is copy'
enough of functions
enough of programs
enough of making it work
enough of 'space'
enough of kio idea
enough of cool factor
enough of render to win

what is architecture?

It is time to redefine architectural design
architecture is not just architecture
architecture is not just problem solving
architecture is not just making stuff up
architecture is not 'just'

design is design!
design is everything
'concept' does not exist
idea exists
fear is good
risk is better
100% is 110% and more
good ol' models and paper architecture
site is context
context is not just site
space is not just 'space'
form is nothing
design is enjoyable
i love my design
i know a lot
the question is
to put everything together...

what am i doing again

So.... design .. what am i doing again

im sure this question often pop up some where some time around midway through ur studios, especially when it comes closer and closer to submission date... what the hell am i doing.

often the solution would be. to kinda restart, reestablish design concept, research more, remake form, remake design. im sure i am one of those victims who redo design at the most inappropriate moment.

While it would be cool, i consulted my prof han, that i have reestablished my new concept cos i think it would better my design direction, that i will have more focus, that i have something to justify in the end, etc. I already did some new designs (still 50% the same actually), mostly changed is the interior layout, and I told him i have no reason to keep my funky exterior.

Well, with 3 weeks to go, a singaporean prof would always throw u to a new direction, confuse you, change ur concept etc. but not a korean prof.

My korean prof told me that concept is not important, and most competitions, the concept panel is only done 1 day b4 submission. concept can be found when everything is done. it is better to have an initial inspiration and diverge, then stick to a strong concept. Also, he told me to not tell my hand to do, but let my hand do the doing. Which means,  do not try to control what you want to do, instead allow ur instincts to take over. Sometimes I will come with a concept and a form, but more often than not, the form does not come from the concept, but from instincts and past experiences. Meaning, that the intial form is more subconscious then it is derived from concept. Meaning, ignore the concept.

Basically, to summurise, finish the project, stop thinking about concept.

Meaning I have to go against everything the singaporean way try to instill to me and all students. "you must have a concept!" "how does your concept develop into the form?". It is a bunch of lies. All along in singapore, i have been form making, doing instinctive stuff, post rationalising to explain and justify my shit. which is actually, not 'correct' but inevitable throughout design. This is as real as it gets.

I must think that this is a real project. Making it work, make my structure work, doing gfa calculations, uber rendering is more important than a concept driven studio student shit that the system trys to produce.

I cant agree with either way. I think that to eventually find an uber concept makes it 'theoretical' and cool, and fun duh. but of course, long process to get it, sometimes never, the tutors get pissed (JM) who thinks "i dont like you, so im going to go against you"
Another way is to just have fun doign form making and do a fake concept, the tbk way. making it work. But tbk also means no fun, having fun pisses her off.
One thing that is always agreeable and I have yet to learn, is that, I have to pretend to be agreeable. To not go agaisnt the system but to go agaisnt the system without them knowing. To let that think that you are agreeable. lol

Yes, I nod my head more often, becoming a yes-man...

1st model, instinctively try to do a model which is cool in under an hour
2nd model... rationalising it
3rd model is too flat for his liking. Looks more horrible than this though in the inside
kinda fourth. almost changed concept. but hey its cool. 'dynamic space'

some interesting pictures from 9 nov , 3x temple visit

good morning 7am. ok we were late so its like 7.15 am at least.
Everyone's favourite scarlet tree (my hair is so long)

They are official, at least what their 'secret hand holding' seems to me

organic architecture or just too poor to get straight columns?

This is what happens when u sleep everywhere.

I dunno, just some updates. #1

New camera, canon A720 IS powershot. so some random badly taken pics (cost 195000 won, around $220 sgd)
Some autumn colours. really nice. A river canal should be like this
street nearby school to get ordinary supplies

very red street in campus. long and straight and nice

same place, but the pedestrian walkway

My Dormitory (3rd floor, and no lift. wtf)

looking out of the entrance of my dorm
looking out of my dorm window

my table of lego stuff. laptop should occupy the middle space usually

CONSTRUCTURE

This is my design on the 'pavilion' on the front entrance of our archi building. Wood is the main material, and this is a cross year project over 5 years of students, about 14 people a team, and 1 singaporean.

Most discussion were in korean, as I am the only engrish speaking one. Clearly they are not interested in the design or this project, for they are not awarded any 'points', other than yr 1 and yr 2, which got some 'points'

being a 'points' orientated design, it was initially a 4 column, rectangle roof and floor, 3 benches design, vaguely resembling that of a bus stop... surely it could solve the problem of the site being a smoker's corner, for now we introduce seats for the smokers to gather and celebrate.

Out of 14 teams members, probably 10 showed up, with only 1 initial design. Some how it evovled to a '4 boxes in a row' thing, with a slight curvature fronting whats left of the yard.

My accident was to voice my comment, suggesting a vantage point in the middle of the yard that pulls people into the 4 boxes. after much discussion in korean, It became my idea, and i am to work on it to give a final design, to be submitted in  roughly 36 hrs time. (16 hrs from now)

It is much suggested that i use straight angles instead of curves, for wood can not cut curves, or so i am told. Being the stubborn guy i am, I curved whatever i want. DEZIGN! Waveform! whalebone! ZERGED!

Constructure is a piece of shit resultanted of bad planning and organisation i think

What will the future be like; what could the past be like

I was reading a book, seoul scenarios, as part of my research on seoul's history, for my studio work. Jean found this book in the library and thought it would be helpful in understanding history

It turned out to be a compilation of competition entry, to envision the changes that will happen to seoul in the next 2 centuries to year 2200 (from 2004). Many made predictions to technology, world events, economy of seoul, and architecture, esp the urban landscape to seoul.

surprisingly it was quite a read, despite not much mention about seoul's past. This is not a historical text, it is a prophecy
I've learned that architects should do architecture that reveal's our time. Similary, it is important as an architect to be able to perhaps be able to adapt to changes and know whats ahead of us. And for that, we must look into the past.

Looking to the past tells us many things. For example, Le Corbusier was a frustrated architect. ^^ His important theories were only made through thorough examination of the past, history leading to the present. With that, and other architects of his time with the same idealogies they propelled modern architecture to this day. Corbu's architecture can be traced back to palladio and neo classical, which leads back to gothic, roman and greek architecture, to vitrivius etc. The beginning of mankind

Now prophecies in a way are created by understanding the past and present. Past is not just the past, there are periods of history that extends to present times and to the future. History is continuous.

In a crazy way, imagine i do not understand anything about the past history, defined as history that has "ended". History that is deemed the past could be considered as those which does not apply to now. Now is defined as any time which is present. In 2050, now would mean the year 2050

To look to the future, we study now and maybe some of the past.
Can it work in reverse? Read the future, the present, and guess what the past is.
What would it be like if i study the present times and predict Seoul's past?

alternative history....

If we can see what are the important issues today, we might predict a few ways that people might deal with it. Similary, we can look at important issues, and predict its past.

What caused today?

It could be fun to look at it this way ( thought not good enough to submit a report on this)

of canals and dreams

after our dinner and dessert, our group (from space group) left for the metro station. we took another route, a different route than the one we came from. At this time, it was already nightfall and dark, street lamps lighting up the street

the street lead uphill in a T junction, where we turned into the narrow street. Audi and mercedes are more common here, for we are at a richer man's district. apparently the president lives nearby.
It was dark and moderate cloud cover, the half cresent moon faintly glowing beyond the clouds. the street winds gently left, obscuring whats in front of it. the asphalt road is flanked by 2 rows of houses similar to singaporean's terraces or semi-ds. Well the difference is that this is not a pure housing estate, it has mixed use typology. Also, all the houses are of different built styles as mentioned b4... High walls and gates surround certain homes. 2 cars drove by us in a hurry, and the street was empty, less the cicadas or crickets that has been crying non stop since morning.

The first sensation of getting lost was at a fork, where soungwook jokingly comments that he don't know where he is. We just followed him, a 45 degree right turn, and in 30 paces another junction breaking to the right. A suv attempts to turn towards our direction, climbing from a pretty steep slope.

We turned into the steep slope down hill. it winds rougly 45 degrees left, our paces widened but slowed, the street opens up as we decends as more of the sky is revealed. We seemed to be further from civilisation despite being in a housing estate, as we can barely hear the comforting rums of the civilian vehicles, it is eerily empty, something like my house estate in singapore.

Where at least singaporeans tend to watch tv after 8, koreans either sleep or are not back yet, i have no idea. cars park at one side of the street, at the slope. almost every where is one way here.

Then, the down slope we are walking ends at a T. the front is fenced up, creating a cliff like atmosphere as the altitude drops sharply. There are no houses in front as they have all sunk in. our view broadens and we see the roofs tops of many houses in front. there do not seem to have any order, the houses do not have any obvious arrangement, something i cant decipher straight away.

We are at a downwards facing slope, with houses littering the entire surface. barely 100 m infront and 10 storeys down is a minor road that we may have came from, but partially covered by trees. further beyond is a typical skyline of soeul, and the tripod building can be seen about a km away.

the edge of the T road is an old metal fence, leading great distances and places either left or right. there seems to be a few creepy staircases leading down the cliff, but not very enticing. We took the left, there seemed to be more cars parked, maybe it smells better this way.

Which leads me to the deja vu event, I immediately recalled a dream i had years back with this familiar scene. A downwards facing slope, houses littering the entire surface. Streets empty, I'm lost. Every turn is another junction. every junction either leads uphill or down hill, or just runs terraced. In the dream, the one lane junctions formed a grid, some roads are big enough for cars, some are more like back lanes. Houses are old like the 60s to 70s, terraced, pitched roofs. There are barely any cars parked. There is no one. It is daylight, maybe morning.

In the dream my destination was down hill to the left, which is exactly where we are heading to in reality. In reality, we saw an abandoned rusty car which adds even more to the atmosphere. Down along the cliff there were junctions leading up, similar to my dream event.

In my dream, I was lost, every street is the same. I managed to somehow proceed to a 'canal', which is locked by a gate. The gate is old metal, rusty, menacing, grilles with spikes above. It wasn't too large, but it seems to deters one from entering the 'canal'

The canal is a wide 'dried up' concrete 'river'. It has puddles of water, mossy, damp, darker than daylight. the gate is underneath a huge bridge spanning across. There used to be water, but there isnt water now. the other side is roughly 50 metres away. massive concrete walls continues the canal, the ground is dirty concrete, wet. I had to cross it.

I climbed the gate which was relatively easy to pass. The reason I crossed the gate was unknown to me even now. I seemed to be running away from something or somethings. I had to reach the other side of the canal where there is another gate.

As i recall there seemed to be more than a gate each side, in fact there are 3 or 4 on either bank.

Crossing the canal wasnt as important as the reason i crossed the gate. I turned back and saw something which frightens me, perhaps it was something chasing me after all. I cant remember.

In a sec i crossed the canal. What happens at the gate on the other bank? I cant remember, but seemed important. Perhaps the difficulty was crossing the 2nd gate. Or maybe something was guarding the 2nd gate. The first gate seemed easy enough cross without any doubt. Shortly after, i woke up. or maybe i cant remember the events that followed. Or maybe it has to be fufilled by reality, now.

So back to reality. We skirted along the cliff, and i was thinking we might lead to a canal or something, and my destiny could be fufilled. we eventually found our way ( i eventually found where i was, actually we were never lost, but took an alternative route)
In the end there was no canal.

I was looking for answers, marc suggested that perhaps the canal at yongdap is the canal to cross. Yong dap was different, as it was more river like than artificial, there were no gates, there were water.

Nevertheless we crossed the takashi castle stream stepping stone obstacle course. nothing happened. ( like the dream, crossing the canal wasnt a key part. the canal was just a setting, a place, an atmosphere. The reason i had to climb the gate to cross the canal remains unclear. And what happens at the other side?)

as we walked up the stone steps to the jogging track, i searched around for answers, signs or clues. as we walked towards the chin up bars, a little girl screamed, which alerted me. she was with her family and shrieked in surprise at a little white dog. The first sign, I thought

I was thinking, maybe seemingly random noticable events form links to the next, which could answer me.

At the chin up bars, a pedestrian walked his dog up the hill. It looked like the present which we gave marc, flying dog, hence marc immediately commented on it. It was white, it formed the second clue.

which leads to the third, the shadows. We hanged our bags on the lowest chin up bar. the street lamp created a long shadow on the floor, which looked like a skinny tall man slinging a bag, shoulders slightly hunched, head down. My hair stood up. This is crazy

The shadows fortunately or unfortunately led to nothing. one reason perhaps was that these 3 clues are just something i made in my head due to all that mess. maybe this wasnt the canal as i created this canal setting my self. Most importantly, there was no gate and no reason to cross the gate. i even took a detour for the stepping stones across yongdap river.

Maybe the time where i have to cross the canal has not came yet...

olympic spirit to the world, television viewers and architecture

Beijing Olympics opening ceremony fell on the date 080808. Catchy advertising is symbolic of lucky numbers of the chinese. It was a pity i missed the first half of the show where the dancers performed, but managed to catch the countries marched pass (204 of them?)
In times of conflict and instability, horrible times, olympics bring the countries together in an event watched by billions on tv. It is a time where people see each other as equals (despite the fact USA's and China's contigent is like half of the total). It is a time of peace and harmony where people are celebrating something, waving their flags, cheering.
I wonder what is there to celebrate for. Iraq is still at war, Georgia war with Russia, zimbawe's inflation, thailand and cambodia's dispute.
I wonder what are countries, political negotiations, and peace for. Being in singapore for too long i have appreciated peace and prosperity, it seems we can do whatever we want if it is within the set of rules
But, if talking dont work, it escalates to fighthing and war...
Then of course, Olympics is the symbol of peace and harmony etc, a poltical propaganda tool that gels millions of peaceful television viewers to see how peaceful the world is, putting them at ease.
Politically correct judgements must be made, like how the USA flag is carried by a black (almost standard procedure), cameras zooming on this athelete. Go Li Jia Wei!
Other than awesome parades, lighthing the fire etc, we have architecture as symbols....

China is not new towards iconic mega structures. All along since history has China constructed large out of scale projects and massive monumental structures. think great wall, forbidden city, almost all the palaces and tombs

now we have CCTV building, water cube and bird's nest (which is impressive with fireworks. During swimming events, the underwater upshot will film the roof of the building, and you will see the 'bubbles'

Icons, symbolic architecture represents drive, power and most of all, it is eyecatching. It is advertising for the host. Tall office towers now often have weird crazy forms and other architecture techniques to pull out from the rest. A square block is boring, an organic shape is new.

While i was working for Space Group, somehow i became the designer of an office block for a competition. Since i was a drone, i develop according to the master's wishes, with a little of my eye, input, decisions and stubborness, which makes me a little more than a drone.... :)

I AM THE CHIEF DESIGNER wahahaha

How do you design something which satisfies 15 directors and consultants, and after that win the competition? How can something have a twist, a double twist, directional twist, structure, double skin, solid and void, a crown, podium, fufils gfa requirements, functions, is oriental, site responsive etc? And the resultant is still true to my design?

before i forget, happy national day. the ndp parade was almost forgettable.

I'm ronery, and I need a montage (montage)

Why is everyone so fucking stupid?

Why aren't more people interrigent?

Rike me?

I'm So Ronery
So ronery
So ronery and sadry arone
There's no one
Just me onry
Sitting on my rittle throne

I work rearry hard and make up great prans
But nobody ristens, no one understands
Seems like no one takes me serirousry...

And so
I'm ronery
A...A rittle ronery
Poor rittle me

There's nobody
I can rerate to
Feel rike a bird in a cage
It's kinda sirry
But not rearry
Because it's firring my body with rage

I'm the smartest most crever most physicarry fit
But nobody else seems to rearize it
When I change the world maybe they'll notice me...

But until then
I'rr just be ronery

Yeah... Rittle ronery, poor rittle me

I'm so ronery...

"How are we gonna to do that?"

"I guess I know just what we need.."

ha!

The hour's approaching, to give it your best
And you've got to reach your prime.
That’s when you need to put yourself to the test
And show us a passage of time
We're gonna need a montage (montage)
Ooo it takes a montage (montage)

Show a lot of things happening at once,
Remind everyone of what’s going on (what’s going on)
And with every shot show a little improvement
To show it all would take too long
That’s called a montage (montage)
Girl, we want a montage (montage)

In anything, if you want to go
From just a beginner to a pro,
You need a montage (montage)
Even rocky had a montage (montage)

Always fade out in a montage (montage)
If you fade out it seems like more time has passed
In a montage (montage)

korea day 4 and 5

day 4. monday

a blissful day begins when the rays of sun strike the wall in front of my bed, illuminating my dorm bunk. of course, that was already 11am when i noticed it. morning starts like 5+ in seoul during the summer time
High cloud cover created a luke warm atmosphere as we trotted down (and a bus ride) to lunch, at wangsimi. Finally no more rain.
after that we went to buy supplies (pillow and bedsheet) around town and came back after dinner. Lotteria burgers. and came back to eat more instant noodles, and a bun.
so like 7 plus we went for a run+ training. With my vommiting tendencies after meals, i was wary, and did not push too hard. but i ran
Why am i reporting about my life.....
But it is a fine day.

day 5 tuesday (work day 1)

1st day of work at space group.

0915 I arrive
0930 I'm brought around to meet my team members. refused to speak korean.
0940 I'm shown my empty desk. and given 5 magazines, 4 which are SPACE

korea day 2 and 3

woooongg......

woooonnggg....

zzZZZZYYYEEEEAAAAOOOOUUUUUUUUUUuuuu....

"kamsahamnida..." thank you

"Rightsabre chom katta chuseyo?" can you pass me the lightsabre

"Jukigo Sibpuyo!" i kill you

woonnnnggg................

"Chugu...go.. ka...te!!......." i die

whilst trying to integrate ourselves more towards korean culture, we simply blabber something korean, also partly impress others...

A: "hami.......ooseyo!"
B: "songahaminda... err.. peigopa..." hungry
A: "peigopa chugogokate!!!!" I'm Hungry I want to die
B: "airconhaminda... peigopa peigopa twaejigogi!" aircon... hungry hungry pork!
A: "pabo ulini Tchalssss..." stupid child short...
B: "pei.... go.... pa...."

our conversation revolves around these few terms, seldom anything else, to much hilarious effect. Mind that our vocab does not extend these words hence we focus more on expression and tone of voice

we also learned a few phrases that we might use in various situation..

ulini harin toemnikka is there a discount for a child?
yongo aradunnun saram issuseyo is there anyone who understands english?

My ex boss in DP said language is most important when one wants to study , architectually, a foreign place and the urban context. Language reveals the essence, mindset of the society, and the terms used have different significance. Not everything can be simply translated to another language as we have to account for the context of the phrase! for example, korea plays alot importance in hierachy when speaking, politeness etc, which is something the society also practise. there could be more but i got to take note.

If I want to master my korean language in my stay, i must also train myself to climb a bazillion steps up and down subways and climb the hills of hanyang. Elevators / escalators has made my life too easy liao in singapore
And master my tolerance of kimchi and spiciness... haha

Late Afternoon, Seoul, destination unknown, cloudy. I drag my tired legs along with our company towards a hill, towards an observation tower (Seoul Tower). Fortunatelyfor me, us Singaporeans are not proficient in walking, hence the pace was rather slow but acceptable for me.
The small roads of seoul were unlike those in singapore. Back home, we have well maintained paved walkways and flawless roads. In these parts, sometimes there are no pavements at all, depending on the traffic and typologies. In small streets, vehicular and pedestrian traffic occupy the same asphalt surface, as restaurant doors open directly with as much setback as a floor mat. Corner blocks or 'shophouses' are usually chamfered, giving a larger shopfront and better turning radius. Sometimes walking on pavements are a matter of finding the 'path' within the paths, skipping around potholes and cracks, its a mix of outfield at civilisation...
Where plastercrete dominate singaporean landscape, brick facade and construction form the majority here. Unlike repetative style of brick laying and material in singapore, every brick built block is of a different colour/texture/pattern. It seems they have all been built in strikingly different periods. It is rare to find any identical brick modules in a street. Hence, it creates an identity, a form of reference for the pedestrians. Even for a new foreigner by me, every backlane's atmosphere can be distinguished and identified purely by visual state of the environment, and probably the brick work plays a huge influence on it. To find my way, for example, along a street, i usually remember the junctions, or openings (sidelanes). These 'nodes' depends on a few factors
Nodes. In a T junction, i remember by 3 things. Type/name/colour of shop occupying the corners, width of roads, brickwork pattern. Since i cant read or understand korean (or find any roadsigns) this is a technique i use. For side lanes, i identify via brickwork and prominent eye catching physical feature ie weird external pipes, mass of wires, climbing plants etc..
Navigation on a complex network of streets in korea is easier than finding your direction in a subway station for me. hahaminda

1st day of korea's 1st Recce mission

Herrohaminda!!! (translated 'hello')

encountering a new place and a new language brought out the foreigner in me.
My inability to decipher and understand korean and my hapless counterparts wandered us to somewhere we never venture before. To force ourselves to communicate!
especially when both parties do not speak the same language.

Soeul, Korea depicted on brochures are metropolis rivalling hongkong, tokyo, shanghai etc. Huge towers reaching skywards and mega highways criss cross the concrete landscape... yep we roughly saw that on the departure on the way to hanyang uni ... trains glide along us as the tour bus travel upstream towards the city centre, spaghetti flyovers yet again confuses my sense of direction. We skirted around to our university though. Until now I do not know my exact location.

zaiqi, mlgh, ds, gb, xy, nn, rich, nai and me decided to wander around our hostel after we arrive from a bus pickup from the airport. Proud to be asshole foreigners that we are, we just walked down the street hoping to find some food. Mind, no one can speak korean actually. I shall steal some pictures from RICHARD

Herro-hamida is probably the first phrase us singaporeans learn, a sum of 'herro' from team america and '-hamida' suffix added to common korean words. It became a greeting of sorts as the rowdy foreigners scream mismatched words to each other, in a futile attempt to assimilate to the culture...

Also we never face our backs to the north... always keeping a watchful eye for enemies behind the borders...

SO university town / suburb seoul isn't really the tokyo i was imaginating... it resembles more of taiwan hilly towns, or real older hong kong street. a rather narrow 2 lane street circles the campus with 'shophouse' like typoligies. Bottom shops open to the streets (most are closed at 10am though) , mostly retail of local produce and services, ie food (most are closed) , marts, tailors, lanshops, market. Such diversity is seldom noticed in one street, though food outlets far outnumber everything else ( i dunno y)
courtesy from richard

The side lanes leading to the back lanes seemed amazing and i want to explore one day. beyond that is a huge concrete wall to support the mighty hanyang campus.

young students frolick the streets, girls holding hands, boys being all boyish.

We reached the main entrance of our campus, some halfway across. And a food outlet open for business selling chinese noodles. (first meal is chinese lol)

of course korea sell pseudo chinese food, and vice versa

Then came Communication. As touristy as we are, we never found a need to ask for anything, just talking among ourselves, snapping pictures away.
