wearing: tweed
the newest addition to my wardrobe is this tweed coat. a lucky find at the op-shop for $7 and the perfect fit. Jackets tend to be a bit troublesome in finding a good fit I find. I wore this outfit to birthday coffees.
I've paired it with my usual jeans. doily scarf handmade by me and brooch from Melinda of moose & bird.

25 today.
today I turned 25. I cant quite believe it myself, the years seem to be flying by.
I was spoilt with lovely, thoughtful gifts, and had a surprise coffee date with my love for brunch.
I did a spot of op-shopping this morning finding some Johnson crockery and vintage dress patterns.
This afternoon I baked a cake and layered it with fresh lemon butter with eggs from our chooks and lemons from the markets.
and tonight we headed out for dinner at an amazing little restaurant that sources local produce.
a perfect little birthday. x

a birthday. my favourite things and a give-away
today I turned 24, and yes I get a bit excited and do a bit of a birthday countdown just as I did as a child.
so to celebrate I thought I would do some gifting to you, my lovely blog readers. a give-away that is full of my favourite things...
winter + woollen blankets + doilies = a hot-water bottle cover (crafted by me)
vintage tea towels + cushions = a cushion cover
vintage florals + pretty bedding = 2 sunny yellow floral Sheridan pillow slips (op-shopped and still in their original packaging)
vintage florals + doilies + bunting = a 3m length of bunting
milk glass + jewellery + more bunting = a sweet little bunting inspired necklace, with pretty milky-glass
to be in the draw to win the hot-water bottle cover, cushion cover, pillow slips, bunting and necklace just leave a comment below (you don't have to be follower but i'd love it if you were). I shall draw the winner on the last day of this month.
i celebrated this morning at work with a delicious peach cheesecake and this evening am heading out for dinner with my love (actually the first time we've been out for tea since we moved here). so a wonderful day it has been.

the most delicious carrot cake
my fiances birthday which fell on easter called for cake making and baking. a favourite of his is carrot cake (fitting really for the double celebration).
i decided upon this recipe which is free from nuts and uses steamed carrots rather than the usual grated version.
2 3/4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
3/4 tsp salt
2 1/2 tsp baking soda
2 1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
pinch of ground cloves
1/2 cup oil (i used olive oil)
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
3/4 cup buttermilk, room temperature (you can easily make your own)
4 large eggs, room temperature
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 tsp golden syrup
1 1/3 cups pureed cooked carrots (from about 1/2 kg raw)
3/4 cup crushed pineapple, drained
chop carrots into large pieces and steam for 15 minutes, or until very tender. puree steamed carrots in a food processor or blender until smooth. set aside to cool.
place flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and spices in a large mixing bowl. add oil, melted butter, buttermilk, eggs, vanilla and golden syrup. Mix until well combined and no lumps remain. fold in pureed carrots and pineapple.
for a cake, pour batter into 2 9-inch greased pans and bake at 175 degrees C. for 40-50 minutes. let cool in pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
for cupcakes, pour batter into cupcake pans and bake for 18-22 minutes.
allow to cool in pans for about 5 minutes, then remove to wire rack.
cream cheese icing (this makes a large amount)
450g cream cheese
3/4 cup butter, softened
2 tsp vanilla extract
5-6 cups icing sugar
beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth.
add 3 cups of the icing sugar. mix until combined.
add in the vanilla extract.
add the rest of the icing sugar and mix until smooth.
apply atop cooled cake.
cake keeps for up to a week in the fridge.
(recipe based on this one).
happy baking.

Birthday Day
Another year down... I celebrated my 22nd Birthday today and what a lovely day it was.
Treated to a hot home cooked breakfast upon awakening, of fresh eggs from the chookies, the last of the tomatoes and a couple of snags won last night at the meat raffle at the local bowling club.
And I received some beautiful and very thoughtful gifts too. This book, Kitchen Gardens of Australia: Eighteen productive gardens for inspiration and practical advice, by Kate Herd. With amazing photography by Simon Griffiths.
A huge 28cm cast iron enamel coated casserole pot was another of my favourites. After hearing of a few others boasting of their results; and seeing Tania's post on her one over at Ivy Nest and maybe making a few subtle hints and adding it to my wish list, I received this beauty. It does weigh a tonne, but I can't wait to put it to use; not tonight though after all that cake.
I would love to hear any of your favourite recipes or useful recipe books for making meals in these casserole pots.

What I found interesting and useful was each of the 18 chapters for each garden beginning with stats including the area of each garden, climate type, soil, average rainfall, water source, method of irrigation and the type of fertiliser and mulch utilised by each gardener. As well as an illustration of the layout of each garden and the location of the different elements.
And how's this for a good idea..An old ladder as a garden trellis.
