Lunch-ing Out at Green Bamboo Seafood Restaurant

I remembered back then during my childhood days, we used to dine out or mum would whip up a really sumptuous meal whenever we had visiting guests to our home. It is not that we usually eat in poor conditions or that mum does not cook lavish meals, but there is just something different; and I guess you could say, it was the excitement stemming from being able to have more company and also to act like a tourist in your own neighborhood and home. It is just different.

Nowadays, there are just too many new restaurants mushrooming everywhere and sometimes I find it difficult to decide where to go; especially when we are not sure of whether they serve good quality food and that is even more crucial when you want to treat your guests well, and show them the nicer part of your hometown.

However, sometimes, it is not all about the price of the food or the place to impress, but rather, the hospitality and the kindness you show to your guests to make them feel at home and welcomed.
Also, food plays that role in determining that they (or their tummies) are well treated, don't you think?

Green Bamboo Seafood Restaurant is a fairly new restaurant to us, though not that new anymore, as I believe they have been around for more than a year or so in the neighborhood of Bandar Mahkota Cheras.
With the theme of seafood in the name of the restaurant, of course there is an assortment of seafood; from crabs to prawns, fish, shells, squids, etc. It is getting hard to find a good seafood restaurant these days; but not so much of a problem in Selangor or KL area due to the larger population and geographical area, as compared to Penang (or perhaps I was picky?)

Ordered a few dishes; mostly our guests' favorites~

Marmite Pork Ribs

The recommended dish from the lady who did the ordering for us.

Thai Style Deep Fried Signature Tofu
They used the local white and silky smooth tofu for this dish; and the sweet and sour with a slight tinge of spicy from the chilies made this the highlight of the meal as it was just so appetizing.

Also, I loved how the dish was not just so flavorful in its taste but turned out to be so colorful and vibrant in its appearance as well.

Braised spinach in superior stock
The spinach was cooked in a soup boiled with little anchovies and lean pork meat, with slices of century eggs which makes us the term of the superior stock.

Stir fry Romaine Lettuce with garlic
As there were more elderly folks who were health-conscious, we ordered this simple and plain vegetable dish upon their request.

Another signature fish is this; Steamed tilapia fish served with spicy fermented bean curd sauce
(Cheong Jing style in Cantonese) - MYR40

Total bill came up to about MYR124++, after discount (they have membership/loyalty card as well for their returning customers - or to keep them returning). There were 9 of us; and it was a satisfying meal.
As usual, always check your bill before paying; just common practice for every restaurant you go to ;-)

Pasar Ramadhan in Mahkota Cheras

This is definitely an outdated post as Syawal is already here and our Muslim friends are happily celebrating the joyous Aidilfitri season.

This was about two weeks ago, I think about a week before Hari Raya when I went home and my parents brought me to the nearby Pasar Ramadhan.
I have never really been to Pasar Ramadhan, and I rarely go to morning or night markets as well but this time, I just wanted to write and blog about this festive market which seemed to be popping all over the country come the holy month of Ramadhan.
It was definitely interesting to explore and to blog about.

This was the small Pasar Ramadhan in Mahkota Cheras.

It was supposed to start as early as 4pm, but I guess we were still too early as there were still a lot of stalls not ready yet when I was there.

Anyway, a quick glimpse into what this Pasar Ramadhan had to offer

I think basically, anything you can think of, you can find it there, from the brisk walk I took through the market.
It was really a mouth-watering affair looking through the food ready on sale, and the friendly vendors just kept tempting you to their stalls.
I truly admire and respect their determination and spirit in keeping strong to their fast despite being surrounded by these aromatic food.

There were a lot of kuih muih and fried pastries stall in the market, and I have always been fascinated with the colorful variety of our Malaysian kueh, and I have to say that the Malays are one of the culinary experts in this arena.

This is like our Chinese kuih (rice cup cakes) used to worship the deities on 1st and 15th of the month, and the Mak cik was nice to explain to me that theirs differ in the sense that they use vanilla soda in making it rise.
Initially her cup cake was supposed to be white, or creamy beige in color but it was not appealing to the children, hence she dotted some red colors on the cakes to attract the children.

Roti John!

I haven't seen this in a while now, it used to be so popular among my friends back then in university days =)

Ayam Percik

Murtabak

Which we bought some home for light tea snacking before dinner

It was quite hot, but I think it was a very educational experience for myself too =)

Christy aka Pickyeater would like to wish all the Muslim readers a very happy and blessed Hari Raya Aidilfitri!~

The most affordable Fish-y meal!

Would you believe me if I tell you that you can get 2 fish for one price; and order two more dishes and yet still pay less than RM50 for a meal for 5 pax?

Yeah, believe it now because we found it in this particular restaurant in Mahkota Cheras; Restoran GT.

Now, they are not big nor reputable like Tai Thong group of restaurants, no, far from it. They are just a small group of people who does the Chu Char business in the kitchen of this restaurant.

How my parents managed to find out about them beats me =P

Menu, only one sheet like this, simple and straight-forwardImage Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

Whatever it says on the menu, I know I am here for a Fish-y meal, because I was already informed that the fish here is really reasonably priced.
The fish, meaning the cheap ol' talapia fish which is not exactly that cheap anymore these days.
I'm not sure, have you realized that when you eat out, fish can be so super duper expensive????

I love garoupa, grouper, threadfin, goby, etc but they cost a bomb! (Although I still find time and place to enjoy them sometimes, well, just to pamper ourselves more;)

My parents, are just the wise spenders they are =)

We had the Deep Fried Talapia

Vege: Stir-fried romaine lettuce at RM8

Another side dish; Assam Sotong (RM12)

Whole meal costs less than RM50, and now you must be bursting with surprise, and curiosity as to how much the fish really costs???

Well, the price, going at promotional price is only RM9!!!

No kidding, seriously, that's why we ordered two fish! If you ordered 3, it's still cheaper than what you get for one fish in other restaurants!

Now, is that not seriously the MOST affordable FISH-Y meal you've ever heard???
