Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 2

Laying out one layer from a bright orange batt...

                                                 ...followed by a second layer.

Placing pieces of plain and patterned silk on the wool surface...

                                                  ...wetting the project out...

...and covering it with clear painter's plastic.

Felting the piece to the pre-felt stage.

                                              The finished and dried pre-felt...

...and its 'fraternal twin' from my last post. ;)

Next time: stitching with wool yarn!

'No Particular Place to Go'- Part 1

Sometimes...

...I like to go into the studio...

...with no particular goal in mind.

                                                             In this piece...

...roving, fabric and bits of failed crochet...

...become part of a textural pre-felt piece...

                                                     ...with hidden inclusions.

                                                    This experimental project...

...made from lengths (and clumps) of silk selvedge...

...plus wool from a soft, bright batt...

...is likewise felted just to the pre-felt stage...

...so it can be used later...

...in some 'as yet unthought-of' project! :)

Next time: two more small felting experiments.

Pieced Nuno Pre-Felt Purses- Part 7

Adding wool from a yellow batt...

...to the project surface.

                                                   Forming an interior pocket...

...from leftover bits of nuno pre-felt...

                                                  ...and additional yellow wool.

The hanging loops are made more 'of a piece' with the rest of the bag...

...by the addition of narrow windings of dark roving.

                                                     Mid-way through felting...

...the project begins to shrink and to become firmer.

Removing the resist and turning the bag right-side out.

                                                       As the felting continues...

...the purse is placed in different orientations...

                                                         ...for even shrinkage.

As the rubbing and rolling continue...

...the once garish nuno pre-felt stripes...

                                             ...become more and more muted...

                                                              ...and subtle.

                                                 As the bag nears completion...

...the flanged bottom is revealed to be a bit of a 'problem child'.

                                              Next time: 'mischief managed'! ;)

Pieced Nuno Pre-Felt Purses- Part 6

Wrapping the overlapping wool from side one up and around the resist...

...except at the flanged bottom of the bag...

...where it must first be opened out carefully...

                                                       ...and then wrapped.

Painter's plastic is employed between the flange and the body of the bag...

...to keep them from felting together.

Covering the bottom of the purse with wool...

...and returning the bag to its 'neutral' position...

...before covering the rest of the pre-felt in fiber.

Next time: I change colors...and add a pocket!

Pieced Nuno Pre-Felt Purses- Part 5

Trimming the pieced pre-felts to the size of the resist.

Sandwiching the foam between two pieces of pre-felt...

...(with the silk toward the 'inside')...

...and stitching the pieced sides together.

Adding a third pre-felt piece at the bottom...

                                                    ...and stitching it into place.

Fashioning hanging loops from sections of leftover nuno pre-felt...

...and sewing them to the top of the bag.

Covering side one of the project with layers of wool from a batt...

                                                         ...and wetting it out.

Covering the hanging loops with fiber...

...and flipping the purse to side two.

Next time: coping with the flanged flap.
