Lego Party!

Well, it wasn't hard to come up with a theme for Nate's birthday party.  He is obsessed with Legos.  I mean seriously.  Every time he prays he ends the prayer with "and thank you for my X number Lego sets".  He has done this for years.  Every time he gets a new set he ups the number and always keeps track of how many he owns.  He can spend hours building and creating.  They are one of the greatest toys ever.  Until you step on one in the middle of the night.  Then they are Satan's spawn.

I got a lot of the ideas and resources for the party on Pinterest.  We had such a great time with our friends and family at Nate's party.  Thanks to everyone who helped him to enjoy his "golden" birthday!

Schoolhouse Pattern review

Awhile ago I bought a bag of designer fabric scraps from Seamology Fabric Shop on Yardseller.  I have loved finding creative ways to use these fun fabrics!  So, when my friend with Schoolhouse Patterns (formerly known as: Pattern Patti) asked me to test an e-clutch pattern/tutorial for her I knew these would be perfect!  Here are a few pix of the final product.

I love the playful patterns on this project!
And the pocket is perfect for the charging cord or your reading glasses.
I am thinking of making another one to use as a diaper clutch to toss in my purse when I'm going somewhere and don't need the whole diaper bag.
If you have made any Schoolhouse Pattern projects please send me a link to your post or pix!  Thanks!

DIY Wedding

Hannah & Ted's DIY Wedding

When my sister announced in April that she was engaged we assumed we would have awhile to plan... when she shared that they were planning on getting married in August we felt hurried!  That is barely enough time to plan a wedding, especially when you are a DIY family! Almost right away we made a whole Pinterest board dedicated to ideas for the wedding.  For awhile we were all just coming up with random ideas and concepts (there is a whole lot more on the board than what I've included in this post).
It took us a little while to pare down to the things that actually worked together.  Hannah and Ted are both English majors so we decided to incorporate a literary theme into the wedding. From then on things sort of fell into place.  It was a lot of work but we are so pleased with the results!  Here are photos and links to a few things that inspired us followed by our interpretations of them:

Whew!!  It has been a whirlwind of activity this summer.  I am looking forward to winding down from it all but we are so happy with how it turned out!

If you are interested in seeing more photos from the wedding visit my photography site at:

I'll be linking up to a few of these fun blogs!

DIY Bridal Shower

Well, we have been pretty busy around here.  One of the events we have had lately is my sister's bridal shower.  It was a little stressful getting ready, but it all turned out lovely!
I found inspiration (as usual) on Pinterest and printed and punched out these cupcake toppers with Hannah's silhouette on them.  How cute are they?

As you'll soon see in my upcoming posts on Hannah's DIY wedding we have been using her silhouettes a lot.  I loved that I was able to incorporate it into the shower decor too!
Awhile ago I saw a bunch of tutorials (like THIS and THIS) and I decided to make a book page wreath.  Well, sadly it sat half finished on my fridge for a couple of months.  Then I decided to complete the dang thing and use it as a decoration for the bridal shower.  It was nice to have the motivation to get it done and off my refrigerator.
Hannah was blessed with lots of wonderful gifts to help her take care of her new home with her new hubby!
One of Hannah's friends was the game master and she kept us busy with lots of fun games.
Here is a shot of us sisters (I'm the oldest and the shortest... whats up with that?).  We're all so excited to help Hannah celebrate her wedding... it will be here before we know it!

Swimwear Restyle - Faux Cami

1 Timothy 2:9 - "And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes." (NLT)

Modesty is a big issue. The world, our society seems to see no place for it. And there are debates within the Christian community as to how far we should go as women of God to maintain our modesty. Are the Amish on the right track with their simplistic approach to modest clothing? How about the Apostolic Pentecostal women with their long skirts and long hair? Should women be allowed to wear pants? Or should we not worry about modesty at all and wear tight shorts that say "bootylicious" on them?

Clearly this could stir up endless comments on all sides of this debate. But I am not here to take sides. I myself find it difficult at times to find a balance and achieve modesty and still feel somewhat fashionable. It seems like the clothing industry makes everything either sexy or frumpy and I am at a loss as to what to buy or wear sometimes. Sometimes we have to take fashion into our own hands!

Summer is just around the corner and along with that comes trips to the pool and all that goes with that. So I thought I would share what I have come up with to avoid the granny moo-moo bathing suits but still remain modest. I created a faux cami look for my bathing suits via layering. This works best if you have a suit with a deep V but could be used with most other styles too. I find that most suits that fit my curvy body type end up being very revealing in the cleavage area. I had a hard time finding a good pix to show it because I'm usually hiding behind a kid! But I think you get the idea.

You will need:
a tankini or one piece bathing suit to modify
a pair of bikini bottoms in a coordinating color (I would go for solid if your suit is patterned or if your suit is solid and you want to add some pop then you could do a coordinating pattern)
needle & thread (coordinating color is optional because all of the stitches should be hidden - and if you are desperate or don't sew you could use safety pins)

1- try on the suit and decide how much coverage you want - put pins on the suit to mark where you need to cover
2 - cut the bikini bottoms in half (cut at the sides and in the middle of the dare I say... crotch part)
3 - lay the front piece of the cut bikini bottoms inside the suit top and line it up with the marks you made - this will serve as a faux cami
4- pin in place along the edges of the neckline
5 - stitch (or pin) around the neckline to attach the "cami"
6 - once attached trim away excess fabric around the edges to avoid added bulk underneath the suit top
7 - TaDa!  Now you have a cute, modest, stylish swim suit you'll be comfortable wearing to the pool or beach!

Here is a suit (available online at Divinita Sole) that is similar to what I've done with mine, where it has a cute cut but layered with a cami for coverage. Divinita Sole also carries other styles of relatively modest bathing suits and a whole line of modest dresses too.

There are a lot of views on modesty, what women should wear and how much is too much skin to show... Here are a few posts that I found interesting:

Craft & Tell

1 Peter 3:3-4 - "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." (NIV)

Spring Papercrafting w/ Kids

Last fall I used my crafting skills and taught papercrafting in one of Nate's classes in our homeschool co-op. Well, the papercrafting class was a hit with the Kindergarten/First Grade class in the fall so the group leaders asked me to teach it again - this time to the Second Graders. At first I was nervous but most of the planning was already out of the way. I just had to modify a few crafts to account for the change in seasons (I didn't think we should make paper pumpkins this semester!). I'm sorry to say that I did not get pictures of each and every project... a girl does what she can. ;-)

week 1 - I love you "This Much" hand card - pretty big hit with the class and used an adequate amount of the class time. We ended up playing one or two rounds of Telephone at the end to kill 5min.

week 2 - Fingerprint Art - About half the class liked this one. Most of them were not fans of having ink on their hands. And it seemed to finish too quickly. We played Giants, Wizards and Elves (a camp game my sister taught us) - which is an active modification of Paper, Rock Scissors. Unfortunately one of the boys said he couldn't play because it had "magic" in it. Sigh...

week 3 - Bunting Banner - After the mixed reviews about the finger print art I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was a real crowd pleaser! The kids really liked this craft and it seemed to fill the class time just right, we finished early enough for everyone to go wash their hands before the next class period.

week 4 - Tissue Paper Stained Glass Window -

week 5 - I had the kids decorate paper Easter Eggs using the leftover scrapbook paper from the bunting banner project. I'm pretty thrifty like that, even when it isn't my money I'm spending. ;-) The kids really enjoyed this one. We got a huge variety of styles in the end, some eggs looked like Humpty Dumpty with arms and legs, while others were colored and looked like stained glass windows. Its neat to see their personalities come out through their projects.

week 6 - Paper Covered Notebook (with silhouette) - This is always one of my favorites because its so personalized. The kids didn't really "get" the silhouette thing so half the kids glued theirs on backwards with their face showing. Oh, well.

Whew! Its been fun teaching the class but it makes me thankful that I am only homeschooling one right now! ;-) The semester went well. I had a good time getting to know the second graders better and I think they had a good time crafting with me.

"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' " Matthew 25:23

Hunger Games MockingJay shirt tutorial

In case you didn't know... I am really really into The Hunger Games. I read the books last summer and have been watching all the movie updates online and have been counting down til the release of the movie. I have been trying to talk everyone I know into reading the trilogy.

Jess and I decided to make T-shirts for the midnight show (yes, we're dorks). After seeing a tutorial on Dana MADE It I have used freezer paper stencils to paint shirts before and thought that would be a good method for this project. In the past I've used my friend's Cricut to cut out my stencil designs but this time I printed the Mockingjay emblem directly onto the freezer paper and used an Exacto knife to carefully cut out the design. Then we carefully ironed the freezer paper to our shirt making sure that each piece was in place (like a puzzle). Before we painted we put another piece of freezer paper inside the shirt to keep the paint from bleeding to the back of the shirt. You could substitute cardboard.
We used a foam brush and dabbed the paint on, doing our best to keep it even throughout. We gave it a 10-15min to dry before peeling the freezer paper off of the shirt. I kind of wish we would have waited longer, I was super paranoid about messing it up.If you are a visual learner HERE is a good video tutorial of this method.

After all that work cutting out the Mockingjay emblem I didn't want those freezer paper pieces to go to waste so even though the original plan was just to do a shirt for Jess and I, I ended up making one for my sister and a onesie for Christine. Then, my brother complained that he didn't get one, and my dad said my mom would feel left out if she didn't have one too. So I made a couple more. My other sister who was not attending the show with us also was offended that I didn't make one for her but I gotta draw the line somewhere! Here is all of us at we were getting ready to leave for the show. All of us girls wore our hair in a Katniss inspired braid!So... on to the Midnight showing on Thursday night... if you haven't been to a midnight show before you have no idea what you're missing! Its so cool to see a movie with a whole theater full of people who are just as excited about it as you are! I love it!
It was a lot less crowded than the Breaking Dawn midnight show that we went to last November. I think it helped that we went to a different theater. All of us that went had read the books so we were ready to critique the movie but found that we really had few complaints. There were a couple of key things that we hated to see cut (Katniss' inner monologues), but there were some scenes that were added that we thought were great additions to the story (behind the scenes with the game-makers). It had better acting than I had expected. And while we certainly are eager to see the next movie, we left the theater satisfied with seeing our beloved story come to life. Two thumbs up for Hunger Games!
