Aor Tor Kor (Marketing Organization for Farmers) Market, Bangkok

"The bargain-hungry tourists who throng Bangkok's sprawling and chaotic Chatuchak flea market every weekend aren't just missing the boat. They are missing the banquet. Just across Kamphaeng Phet Road, the Marketing Organization for Farmers Market (MOF, or aor tor kor, as locals pronounce the acronym) is a comparatively clean, serene showcase of Thailand's seasonal fruits and highly seasoned curries." .....so reads a Time.com article.

Another review of this market can be found here.

It was a Saturday, and our last day in Bangkok, and we were trying to cover the entire Chatuchak area with what little time we had left. Hubby and I were curious enough to venture away from the Chatuchak flea market, went across the road and stumbled upon this semi-wet market teeming with food, both fresh produce and cooked.

Huge river prawns (udang galah), longer than the span of my palm.
Ginormous live mud crabs. Poor things, all tied up.
Check out the size of the fish roe!

Big cockles.

And then we went to the cooked food section. A stall selling crispy slabs of siew yoke (roast pork). We bought a strip, it was goooood, though the skin was a tad crunchy-hard.

Pots of ready-cooked food.

Very pretty otak otak, THB40 each.

Grilled river prawns! THB270/pack.

Cooked crabs.

Stuffed crabs.
Poultry.

Duck tongue.

Pork knuckles, THB250 each.

Mussel omelette.

Deep fried jumbo cat fish.

Spatchcocked chicken, THB130 each.

Chicken & fish.

More ready cooked food.
Soft shell crabs, THB50/pack.
This place truly delighted us, and would definitely delight any glutton with a penchant for meat and seafood.

Kinnaree Gourmet Thai Restaurant & Bar, Bangkok

We were told that this was the second best Thai restaurant in Bangkok, and so we had our Christmas 2008 dinner here. The pathway leading to this restaurant was lined with bamboo trees, which provided it a touch of nature. The ambience of this restaurant was rather cosy, awashed with a soft yellow glow.

A deep fried samosa for appetizer.
Kinnaree Wings aka deep fried marinated chicken wings (THB120) was a simple yet tasty dish. They sure use alot of lotus flowers here, almost every dish came decorated with a lovely pink bloom.
Tom Yum Gung with river prawns (udang galah), a big pot for the 6 of us (THB380). The prawns could have been fresher, but the soup itself was very good, with just the right level of spicyness.
Yam Mamuang Pla Duk Fu aka fresh mango salad with crispy shredded cat fish and cashew nuts (THB220). The cat fish tasted more like keropok, having been deep fried and shredded beyond recognition, and since my appetite was still suffering from the tummy bug, I could not down too much of this oily dish.
I did, however, love the pickled mango dressing that came with the cat fish. Sweet and sour tanginess personified!
Pla 2 Nam or Fish Two Ocean (THB380) was the quaint name of this dish, which was basically a combination of steamed seabass in spicy lime sauce and deep fried seabass with sweet and spicy tamarind sauce. This was definitely a crowd pleaser.
Phad Phak aka stir fried mixed vegetables (THB140) was another simple dish prettily decorated with a lotus blossom.
Moo Phad Prig Thai Dum aka stir fried pork in black pepper sauce mixed with a variety of Thai herbs (THB220). I liked the tenderness of the meat and the peppery spicyness of this dish.
The meal came up to THB2071.52 for the 6 of us.

Brunch @ Chatuchak Weekend Market, Bangkok

We had to go check out Chatuchak Weekend Market of course, since virtually everyone who had been to Bangkok had reminded us to do so. Predictably, our first task upon reaching the market was to search for food.
We stumbled upon this economy rice shop with a spread that looked really interesting and colourful.
Various curries abound.

And strange looking dishes too.
Oh my babies! Deep fried river prawns (udang galah).

Squid stuffed with minced pork......this dish had a strange salty-sourish taste, I didn't quite fancy it.

Deep fried pork neck slabs.

Steamed minced meat slices topped with salted egg yolk......pretty, but way too porky in taste to suit my palate.
The iced milk tea that hubby ordered....the cup resembled a coconut.

Verdict: 2-bams. Not a good idea to dine here despite the visual temptation.

Tony Roma's @ Siam Paragon Mall, Bangkok

It was dinner time in Siam Paragon Mall, and there were 4 carnivores at large.

Ok, it's a tad sad, but this was actually our first time eating pork ribs at Tony Roma's. And how I wished then that I was not nursing a tummy bug, I could have eaten one whole rack of ribs in my peak form.

Complimentary bread & butter.

We dug in to the Appetizer Sampler : Potato Skins, Fire Wings and Mozzarella Sticks with three dipping sauces (THB415). The fire wings and potato skins topped with cheese were super tasty, and deep fried breaded mozarella was definitely a new experience for me!

Our main course consisted of 2 full slabs of ribs. Slab #1 was The Original Baby Backs (THB595). Tony Roma's award winning baby back ribs were invented in 1972 in Florida, USA. They are world-famous for these babies. Cut from the tenderloin and basted with Tony Roma's original BBQ sauce, the restaurant considers them the “filet mignon” of ribs.

Slab #2 was the St. Louis-Style Ribs (THB595). A very special cut of spare ribs, the St. Louis-style ribs rank high in the thick, juicy and meaty departments. We tried it with Tony Roma’s Red Hots sauce; a zesty blend of chili pepper, black pepper, crushed red peppers, chipotle peppers and Tabasco sauce.

Rib entrées are served with cole slaw and a choice of baked potato, french fries, ranch style beans, rice, corn on the cob or tomato pesto.

Of the two types of ribs, I had a preference for the St. Louis-Style Ribs probably cos the marinade was smokier and sweeter, it had more zing to it.

The aftermath of our attack (which set us back THB1775). Burp!

Exceptionally great ribs! 4 bams, no less!

Bangkok December 2008

Last Christmas was our first trip to Bangkok. Having read alot about the food scene there, I was all raring to gorge myself silly, but it was just my luck that I came down with an upset tummy before our trip. And so, I had to take it slow, watch the clan eat and console myself with nibbles and photographs.
This was the best bacon, sausage and.....

...quail eggs (how cute is that?!) ever! Taken at the Platinum Mall food court.

The pork satay comes with peanut sauce, toast and pickled onions and green chillies. I loved the pickles.

The Thai version of char siew rice.

I gotta rave about the otak otak. Super spicy and super good. Custardy, santan-rich and imbued with fresh fishy goodness!

Rice with very spicy jungle curry and veg.

Thai fried fishcakes, with lots of lemongrass taste, served with pickled cucumber.

Mixed beef noodles with beef balls and meat slices (I think I spotted some spare parts too), teeming with garlic oil.

Spring rolls.

Braised pork rice.

And for dessert, I had birds' nest soup which cost about RM10.00 per bowl.

Grilled bananas with sugary sauce.

This kuih tasted like the santan-rich top of kuih talam.

And of course, my all-time-favourite Thai dessert; Tab Tim Krob or water chestnut encased in glutinous rice flour in sweet santan soup. Chewy chewy yummmm....
