The Joys of An Ipod: You are What You Listen To Each Day
Recently, I was given an Ipod as a gift. Although being a passionate lover of music, somehow this small, but mighty device had escaped me. It was the category of mechanical, and therefore, I stayed away from it hook, line and sinker. After being told by so many people that it would become my next best friend, and one that would last for years to come, I decided to give it a try.
Bliss is one word that can be used to describe the power and joy from this device. Once I learned to download music, I sat down and reminisced about all the different pieces, tunes and artists that I have grown to love over my many years on this earth. Just as you can tell that my skin is one that is well lived in, it is equally the case, that these ears are filled with so many notes, keys and lyrics over the years.
Now you may ask, what is in my Ipod (at least for today?) As you may imagine, there is a diversity of music. Inside this small machine, you can find everything from Rachmaninoff, Maxim Vengerov, Brahams, Golijov, Amy Winehouse, Bjork, Klezmer music, cantorial solos, Jo Cocker, Nat King Cole, Cuban Salsa, Bloomberg News, Jerusalem online, and the list goes on and on.
What does this say, at least about me? Am I all over the map, when it comes to music? Perhaps. Does this make me an interesting, diverse, and complex woman. Absolutely. Do I want to expand my horizons, and add more songs, artists, and pieces? It is a given.
The conclusion: You are what you listen to, and more, each and every day.
Thank you for your minds.

I finally succumbed to the iPod craze last year. What's funny to me is that my students find it extremely interesting to see what I listen to, especially if it's a current artist. It's as though old people shouldn't be listening to music, especially if it's from this decade.
Fred,
Include me as one of those 'old people.' I will play mine at work today, sharing some of the songs, pieces, and see what the feedback is.
Thank you for sharing.
So true: you are what you SAY, and you are what you LISTEN to -- output and input both. Glad you've found a little piece of heaven in your iPod. :-)
well....not quite, eh.
Ma used to tell me to try everything on my plate. How would I know if I like a thing or not if I do not try it.
(I would not later blame her for trying heroin...the concept is better understood by me, now)
But to this day I will 'try' things before admonishing or praising them.
Music, too.
And please trust me on this....
there is some terrible music out there.
But, how to know if it is terrible?
Listen to it in its entireity. Sometimes something sounds so wrong, but, then at the end, it all flows together nicely.
Sometimes things sound nice, but end abruptly or bad, so....
I listen to many musics.
And want only tobe myself in the end, eh?
I have a book idea that goes along with this post, but I don't want ti stolen so I won't go into detail. I agree with you. I think if you are a person who cares about music, it helps define who you are, just like favorite books and movies do. Our lives are becoming increasingly multi-media, and we sometimes feel defined by our favorite food, movie, book, song, etc... That's a good introductory lesson for my writing course: Tell me who you are using your favorite movie, song, book, and food.
