Restoran Kong Mah @ Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh, Sungai Buloh

This is an entry about one of my favourite Dim Sum restaurants in the Klang Valley. Located in a hidden spot in Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh is this restaurant called Restoran Kong Mah that serves excellent Dim Sum. In fact, this is my second time coming here and I have previously written another entry on this place which you could access via this link: http://venoth.blogspot.com/2013/03/restoran-kong-mah-kampung-baru-sungai.html

Restaurant Kong Mah in Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh

All Steaming Is Done Outside

The Interior
I would not be writing much here this time as it would just be repeating myself from the previous entry. What I would briefly like to say is that this restaurant serves a great variety of Dim Sum which otherwise is only available at hotels at a premium price. Their service is excellent and from the time you walked in, you would be treated like a king with trays after trays of both steamed and fried Dim Sum being brought over to you for you to choose. Even if you would like to do top ups later, they would bring about all the trays again to you without a fuss.

These were the dishes that we had today. It may seem less compared to the last time as this time around, it was just Angie and I and ten plates of Dim Sum for two is quite a lot too. I must say all their Dim Sum's are delicious. I would strongly recommend their Custard Buns, Siew Mai, Loh Mai Kai, and their Bacon Rolls which is heavenly.  Their Siew Mai here is also quite unique as they have the Black Pepper version of it which is really good and worth a try. For all the dishes we had today, the bill only came to RM 49.00 which is very reasonable.

Gung Korean Restaurant @ Ampang, Selangor

Located in Taman Ampang Utama is this Korean restaurant called Gung Korean Restaurant. I have heard from some of my Korean friends that this place serves some good grilled pork ribs. Being a Korean food fan myself, Angie and I decided to head here for lunch today. I am not very familiar with Ampang and luckily Mr. Garmin was able to guide me accurately to their doorstep. Having arrived here, I was surprised to see that every shop here was a Korean shop. Within this area itself, there must be at least a 100 Korean restaurants and another 20 Korean grocers and hair dressers. This place is surely a mini Korea!

Gung Korean Restaurant on the first floor
As you can see from the above photo, there is another Korean Restaurant just below this place too. The entrance to Gung restaurant is through the stairway on the right of this photo.

Stairway Leading To The Restaurant

Simple Interior

Us at the restaurant
This restaurant is on the first floor and one has to climb two fleets of stairs to get here. Definitely not seniors friendly. The restaurant itself is huge, covering three shop lots and comprises of two large open dining spaces and with a number of private dining rooms. The furniture was simple but comfortable. There seems to be also a number of tables that have been set up for the BBQ and Korean Steamboat. Must be another thing that this restaurant is famous for. Most of the waiters here were Burmese guys with a few of their cooks being Koreans. They were very efficient and I must say they knew all the Korean dishes by heart which makes it easier for customers to order. In some places, when they hire foreigners they do not educate them on the dishes and this poses as a problem to customers but that was not the case here and the ordering was very smooth. As Angie and I had already decided what we would like to have, we did not take much time going through the menu and it was all a breeze.

Green Tea @ RM 3.00
We both decided to go for the Green Tea and this was charged at RM 3.00 per mug.

10 Banchan Side Dishes

10 Banchan Side Dishes

10 Banchan Side Dishes

Salad
As we ordered the Kimchi Jigae, it comes with 10 Banchan side dishes as per the above photos. Unlike some other places, the side dishes above is limited to a three times refill free of charge and subsequent top ups would be charged at RM 5.00 . The variety of the Banchan's were quite good and they were fresh. I would rate those at 8/10 .

Dolsot Bibimbap @ RM 17.00
As the main dish, we ordered the above Dolsot Bibimbap and the portion was huge and good for two. I must agree that it was well done and tasted good. We also asked for some extra sauce which they accommodated without a fuss. I would rate this dish at 8.8/10 .

Kimchi Jigae @ RM 20.00
I loved their Kimchi Jigae. It was heavenly. An excellently prepared dish and I would say that it is one of the top three Kimchi Jigae's that I have tried in the Klang Valley. There was a whole lot of vegetables and meat inside this piping hot soup. Extremely delicious. I would rate this dish at 9.8/10 .

Dwaeji Galbi @ RM 25.00
This dish is called Dwaeji Galbi and it is basically Korean Grilled Pork Ribs. This is the dish that was spoken very highly by my friend and it definitely was up to the mark. For this dish, you would have to choose the volume i.e. grams of pork that you would like to have and it is priced accordingly. We choose 200 grams and it was priced at RM 25.00 . I must say that it was very well done. The meat was juicy, tender and delicious. Definitely a must try dish at this restaurant. I would rate this dish at 9.8/10 .

Overall, this meal was worth the travel for us. I would also like to mention here that the lady boss of this restaurant goes to every table and gets the customers feedback and opinions on the food, ambiance and price which is an excellent practice. She also makes sure that all comments are recorded and resolved. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to any Korean food lover.

Kin Ryu Tei Japanese Restaurant @ Subang Jaya, Selangor

Located right opposite Sime Darby Medical Centre in Subang Jaya, is this row of shop lots that is filled with Japanese Restaurants. In the first row itself , there are four shops that are side by side and slightly further along the same block, you could find another two Japanese Restaurants. Having been in the area this afternoon, I decided to try one of these Japanese Restaurants called Kin Ryu Tei.

Kin Ryu Tei Japanese Restaurant in SS 15, Subang Jaya

Small yet cosy space

Nice Interiors

Sushi Bar

Shelf Displaying Various Awards Won
This restaurant has a small common dining space and this is due to the fact that they have a number of private rooms inside and most of the space has been allocated to that. There was also a long bar for solo diners like me which was pretty comfortable. It was manned mainly by two waitresses and another guy to help out with the Sushi Bar. It seems that he is a Sushi specialist as I did not see him doing any other tasks throughout the time that I was there. Another thing that I noticed was a high shelf that displayed a number of awards that this restaurant has won over the years. As I was alone, I decided to sit at the counter as it seemed more practical bearing in mind that the number of tables here were limited. Another interesting point that I noticed when I checked in on Foursquare were the tips left by a number of users saying that this restaurant served really crap food. Now that worried me a little but again those tips seemed to have been at least three years old. I just thought to myself, if that many people find the food to be horrible, how could they have won the awards that they had over the years. I decided to just go ahead and try the food for myself and come to a conclusion therefrom.

The Menu

Set Lunches

Set Lunches

Cutlery
I was given two sets of menus when I was there. The larger one that you see is the Ala Carte Menu and for lunch, they do have these sets which seem like great value to me. That very set is priced double it's price in the Ala Carte menu. Perhaps the portion size could be bigger but I guess the Lunch Sets would be sufficient for the day. Having decided on the set, I ordered a Sushi Ramen set for RM 23.00 . This set comes with a number of items which I would speak of more shortly.Having confirmed my order, I was then handed the cold towel which is typical in most Japanese restaurants.

Cold Refillable Green Tea @ RM 1.50
I settled for a cold Green Tea as my drink. This comes at a price of RM 1.50 and is bottomless which means that they would keep refilling it as it depletes. The Green Tea was pretty nice and I would rate this at 9/10 .

Bowl of Ramen
The first items that was part of the set was the above bowl of Ramen. I should say that it was good. The soup was relatively nice and it was well flavoured. I would rate this Ramen at 8/10 .

Vegetable Salad
The second item that came with the set was the above Vegetable Salad. I loved this salad for the simple reason that the vegetables were fresh and I loved the sweet and spicy sauce that came with it.  It went very well with the vegetables. Again I would rate this dish at 8/10 .

Chawanmushi
This by far is the best Chawanmushi that I have ever tried. I just do not know how to describe the taste but it was fabulous. I would rate this at 10/10 . It was a well perfected dish.

A Platter of Various Sushis

A Platter of Various Sushis
The Sushis were really really good. It came with a wide variety and it was all included in the set. A great preparation. I would rate these at 9.5/10 .

Papayas
The last dish was this little platter of Papayas. Overall, the food here was extremely good and I enjoyed all the above for just RM 23.00 . I wonder why all the negative comments on Foursquare as I found the food to be excellent. For these guys to have been here for such a long time, they must have maintained the good quality especially when they have another three Japanese restaurants as their neighbours. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Red Onion @ Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

Located in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar is this restaurant called Red Onion Restaurant that serves good Pakistani and Middle Eastern dishes. They are located towards the end of Jalan Telawi facing the houses and right beside the Dominos Pizza outlet. I first heard of this restaurant from a friend of mine who loves Pakistani and Afghan food and he strongly recommended this place to me. Having heard from a fussy diner like him means that this place must be surely good.

Red Onion Restaurant in Jalan Telawi

Interior of the Restaurant

Interior of the Restaurant
As always, we had a great problem finding a parking bay. Jalan Telawi is an area that is buzzing with activity be it day or night. I have had to park at a distance and walk up to this restaurant. This restaurant is fairly new and has been designed beautifully. I specifically liked the extremely warm reception given at this restaurant by everyone there. The design and ambiance is also lovely and the tables are well spaced to give the diners some decent privacy in their conversations. There is also a TV that continuously plays Pakistani channels.

Cutlery
The above are just photographs from some of the menu pages. They serve a wide variety of dishes which covers Pakistani, Arabic, Middle Eastern, Western and Afghan Cuisines. Not to forget they also offer a small number of Vegetarian dishes. I think their specialty lies specifically around the Pakistani, Arabic and Afghan Cuisines. This is based on my observation from the number of people in the restaurant ordering these dishes. It did not take us long to decide on the dishes as my friend had already recommended some good dishes here to try.

Chicken & Corn Soup @ RM 10.00
This was the first starters that came and Angie had ordered this dish. It is Chicken & Corn Soup, Pakistani Style. I tried this soup and my verdict is that it was absolutely great. It was lightly flavoured but with great amounts of black pepper and that makes it quite spicy. There is also some eggs in it. I have never tasted anything like this before in all the Pakistani restaurants that I have visited. It's simply fantastic. I would rate this at 10/10 .

Salad @ RM 10.00
Okey, yes I know what you are thinking. There was no photograph of this dish in their menu and I had ordered this Salad as the starters. I don't really know how to call this a salad but it is and it is priced at RM 10.00 . To me, this looks more like fresh ingredients that would be added into another dish while cooking and chili....that's a little too much. Maybe this is the Pakistani style? I do not know and because of that I would not rate this dish at all.

Naan Basket @ RM 10.00
This is by far one of the best Naan that I have ever tried. It was on the thick side and yet it was extremely soft and fluffy. The Naan Basket comes with two huge Naan breads. I would rate this at 9.8/10 .

Lamb Dopiaza @ RM 20.00
This is a Pakistani dish which is made out of Lamb and Onions in Gravy. It is not spicy but is was well spiced and was really good. The only setback which I felt was that the amount of lamb was a notch too little for the price paid but hey, this is Bangsar and everything is expensive here. Nevertheless, the dish was really good and went extremely well with the bread. I think it would be a good dish to have with rice too.  I would rate this at 8.8 / 10 .

Special Chicken @ RM 22.00
The above dish is called Special Chicken which is Chicken that is marinated overnight with Yoghurt and is then cooked with Salt, Pepper and spices along with some gravy. You can choose which part of the chicken that you want for this dish. It was a pretty good dish and not spicy although there was pepper added. The Yoghurt had been absorbed well into the chicken and has made it very soft. I would rate this dish at 8/10 . Between this and the previous lamb dish, it would prefer the previous.

Angie All Set For Dinner

Pista @ RM 11.00
This was the desert that we had after dinner. It was typically Almond Pudding with nuts. Even between us, we had different opinions on this dish. Angie did not like this dish but I found it to be just okay. Well, it was not sweet enough and tasted somewhat like oats. I would rate this at 5.5 / 10 .

Masala Tea @ RM 6.00
Just as the last touch for dinner, I ordered a cup of Masala Tea. It was not bad and came boiling hot. I know many would love it this way but I for one never like hot drinks to be too hot and so for me I had to wait for a while till it cooled down. But I know that most people would love their hot drinks really hot and this would be just perfect for them. I would rate this tea at 7/10 .

Their Other Outlets
I was surprised to learn that they have other outlets too in the Klang Valley and therefore the response from the public must be surely good. I find that their prices are slightly high for the portion size but the food is reasonably good. Another thing that I like about this place is that the owners and waiters keep coming to us asking about how the food was and if we had any complaints or recommendation. This is good customer service.  Definitely worth a try at least once.
