The Mysterious Avengers @ De' Champion Duck, Bandar Menjalara

(NON-HALAL)

Long before "The Avengers" came to town, there was another superhero team; helping to save the world from cholesterol by eating up as much fatty food as possible.  We called ourselves "The Mysterious Avengers" (TMA)... We have since gone under the radar as the authorities were on to us and tried to curb our activities. I now blog on one of TMA's cholesterol conquest with fondness ... Yes, TMA were last seen at De' Champion Duck in Bandar Menjalara ... and this is our story.

Claypot Pickled Vegetables with assorted meat
Claypot "Shuin Choy" - it was spicy enough but was not as sour as I would like it to be.  I enjoyed the bits and pieces of meat; especially roast duck skin together with the pickled vegetables.

Drunken Roast Duck
The Drunken Roast Duck was great - the meat was tender and juicy and the herbal gravy with a tad of Chinese wine added lovely flavours to it.  It's a different kind of roast duck...this is good but my fave is still the two stalls in Klang, HERE and a similar herbal style roast duck HERE. Of course, De' Champion Duck is a much nearer alternative :o)

Spicing it up at Waroeng Penyet, The Curve

Now, Waroeng Penyet @ The Curve needs no further intro as it's been around for more than a couple of years now. However sometimes, it's the old stuff that's worth mentioning again - especially when it's also good stuff! It's just that I do eat here off and on and I usually do so if I'm in the mood for something spicy. When I say spicy, things can really get spicy HOT here at Waroeng Penyet.

Waroeng Penyet
Place your order at counter and take a number...a big number :o)

And what do I usually order?
Wings Penyet - Flattened Fried Chicken Wings
Wings Penyet (Flattened Fried Chicken Wings) I just love these wings, they are tasty tender and aromatic - but notice the emphasis of the pic is more on the sambal?! Hahaha...Apart from the one that comes with the chicken, I usually add on more. There are two types; mild and hot spicy sambal and they are placed at a corner for everyone to help themselves to it (in my case, repeatedly).

Es Milo Dinosaur

Though having a cold drink means an increase in the "burning" intensity of the tongue from all that fiery sambal, I always end up ordering the Es Milo Dinosaur here. It the perfect combo meal for me..1,2, Knockout! Hahaha...Well, Waroeng Penyet never fails to "spice things up" for me, hahaha...I guess that's why most of us enjoy coming back for the "torture" time and time again :o) Spicy Satisfaction Guaranteed (SSG)!

On a final note, I would like to wish my Muslim readers "Selamat Hari Raya & Maaf Zahir Batin". To all those travelling back to their hometown for celebrations or simply enjoying the holiday break - Safe Journey and God Bless.

"Legendary" Dry Fried Chicken Wings @ San Tung, San Francisco

We had to...we just had to. We had to taste the "legendary" dry fried chicken wings at San Tung Chinese Restaurant. It seems like everyone one else had to too!

San Tung Chinese Restaurant

Shrimp & Leek Dumplings
Before we wax lyrically on poultry, it's been said that the shrimp & leek dumplings (USD6.50 for 12 small dumplings) are good here too ... The ground shrimp and Chinese chives gave more flavour as compared to those that comes with a whole shrimp to my opinion. It was pretty good and I definitely enjoyed this better than the ...

Beef Noodles & Braised Duck @ Ang Kim Chwee, Johor Bahru

Waking up the next morning, I definitely felt much better than the night before. The fever was gone and it was another day, my last day in Johor Bahru. As much as I had enjoyed myself during my trip down south and over to Singapore for the past few days, I looked forward to going home to fully recuperate.

Of course, we definitely had to do brunch in Johor Bahru before making our way back to Kuala Lumpur. This time round, Alicia and Charles brought us to Ang Kim Chwee for beef noodles, which they say is a favourite of the local folks there.
Ang Kim Chwee
The area was not exactly a hive of activities till we pulled up near to Ang Kim Chwee itself. Right opposite this place, one can see the construction area for the new Custom and Immigration office. Located under a block of walk up apartments, this place had quite a crowd. Oh, there were also lots of birds flying around or resting on the railings around the building.
Beef Noodle Stall

Seems that the Beef Noodles here are done Hainanese style. That would explain the fact that I've not seen beef cooked this way at stalls before. A chunk of beef is cooked and the stall owner slices the meat as he prepared the orders. Look at that steaming hot pot of beef with all that gravy! The chilli sauce is also quite an essential part of eating beef noodles to me.. It was normal but after adding some calamansi juice, it had a zesty taste to it which I liked.

While waiting for the orders to arrive, my friend ordered braised duck. It arrived before the noodles and I was pleasantly surprised by it. It was delicious...tasted a lot better than it looked. I also like the way they had cut the duck, especially the meaty parts into thin slices. The meat was tender, the tofu (beancurd) and hard boiled eggs were delightful; all dipped in the aromatic gravy.

Braised Duck
The deceiving duck - if you're ever here for the beef noodles, you have gotta order this too!
Beef Noodles
The Beef Noodles (RM5 small bowl/RM6 big bowl) finally arrived and they got my order wrong, I had wanted Lai Fun (thick round rice flour noodles) but what we got was the yellow noodles instead. The meat was quite tender but the tripe needed slightly more chewing than normal :o). As for the noodles, it was normal tasting to me, even with the added char choy (preserved vegetable). It did come with a bowl of soup and beef balls which was of the standard offering. My vote still goes to my usual haunt for beef noodles in Section 17, Petaling Jaya. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if they had given me my Lai Fun :o).

Well, I think I enjoyed the braised duck more than the noodles. Other folks seem to enjoy this version though; different strokes for different folks. Anyway, if you're ever around this area, check these two stalls out at

Roast Duck, Restoran I-Po, Klang

(NON-HALAL)

I had previously written about the roast duck at Restoran I-Po, one of my regular eating place whenever I'm in Klang. I last visited Klang when my friends and I went for Jackson's Book Valley grand opening. We turned down Jackson's invitation to have a go at the spread at his store as we all wanted to save our tummy space for I-Po's roast duck. My friends who have only heard me rave about it made sure they tried it this time round.

Lyn, Yuen and I drove to I-Po, meeting up with Eng and Ann there, who were long time Klang residents. Eng and Ann had initially suggested that we try the roast duck at Yut Moon, another quite famous Klang restaurant as they find the roast duck there good. However, Lyn said that we must try I-Po's by hook or by crook and since Eng and Ann haven't tried it either, we all agreed to have our lunch I-Po. I have personally tried the roast duck at Yut Moon but I-Po's wins it by a mile! Since, I find it that good, I-Po's roast duck deserves a second post! Yay!

Since there were five of us, we ordered one whole duck (I can almost finish half of I-Po's duck on my own!). When the roast duck arrived at our table and after the first bite, they all agreed unanimously that I-Po's roast duck was very good (even better than Yut Moon's). The duck was indeed really lovely!
When one orders the duck, a helper would then take the already cooked duck and "bathed" it with extremely hot oil in a wok. This gives the roast duck its crispy skin which is the signature preparation of the roast duck here. Then only will it be carried back to the front counter to be cut up and served to the customer.

Apart from roast duck, they serve the usual char siew and siew yoke (bbq meat), which isn't too bad. Ann who loves "Shuin Choy"(pickled vegetables) ordered a bowl and also beancurd which is displayed at the counter like the usual economy rice dishes.
I'm planning to go Klang next Saturday for lunch, who wants to go??? Can hitch a ride with me or if there are too many of you, we can have a "duck" convoy! LOL...If you're familiar with Klang, you can find I-Po at :

Bayu Perdana 1
41200 Klang, Selangor

Anyway, I'm off to Malacca for this weekend. Till then....

See Show, Eat Duck, Have Desserts!

Gosh! Exams are over! Yay! I hope I don't have to re-sit! Ha ha ha...(laughing in a delusional manner!). Oh well, I have been catching up on my sleep and running lots of errands. Before, I write about food. I must blog about the wonderful play I saw on Saturday night. Took Sis Mah to watch SIB's musical drama "Drunk Before Dawn". JC managed to get me two tickets from a friend; tickets for all the shows were sold out! I must say, it was very nice. Loved the songs and the story was good. Well, we aren't exactly talking about Broadway plays but in my opinion, it was better than a lot of shows that I've seen here. Professionally done, great cast and all, for the fact that this was coming from a church. Even if the message of God didn't touch the heart of the audiences, the play itself would have wowed them. After all, this play was inspired by a true story. On Dec 21, it will be shown in Kota Kinabalu at the Yayasan Sabah Auditorium to raise funds for charity! It's even on the website of the Sabah Tourism Board! Go see it the play if you can!

Okay, now back to my regular program! Food...Hee hee...This time my fave place for roast duck, Restoran I-Po in Taman Bayu Perdana, Klang (located a few shoplots away from the Maybank that's next to the Caltex petrol station). Why do I love the roast duck here? Obviously, for a sinful reason, ha ha ha....The difference here is that, upon taking the order for a duck, they will dunk the roast duck into hot oil (hidden from our view) for an extra minute or so. So, what we get is a roast duck with crispy skin. However, this means that the roast duck has a bit more oil. Complete the meal with the nice duck sauce and their special chilli sauce plus tasty soup and there you have it, a meal that truly makes your day! Well, it makes MY day at least. ;o) A whole duck is going for RM32 (unless there is a price hike from the time of my visit-not surprising, everything is going up, LDP toll, from RM1.00 to RM1.60! Gasp!).

On one of my visits there, the three of us girls ordered a whole duck and the lady looked at us as if we were mad. Of course, after the meal, we showed her that we really loved the duck, were really hungry and that she was right, we were REALLY mad. LOL! A pic of the duck you say? Here it is! Oooh....I must make a trip to Klang for my roast duck soon, I'm craving for it now, looking at the pic!
As for desserts, we ended up trying this new place, Leo's Kafe in Bukit Tinggi. I was at Bukit Tinggi again recently at night. Wow! That place is really happening. Lots of packed restaurants and cafes. The roads were so busy and made even more crowded with the customers dining at the roadside. Gotta go back and try the other outlets there one day. Back to Leo's, we didn't try the food as we were still full. Anyway, the menu looks pretty ordinary and prices was reasonable.
The place is filled with "happy" colours. The staffs' uniform is a shocking pink t-shirt and pink bandanna; cute for the waitresses but not so for the waiters!

What caught my eye was the gelato selection. I quickly ordered one with biscotti (forgot the name - reasonably priced at RM5plus) and thoroughly enjoyed it. The rest of them had coffee.

I like the cute design they did, sort of like those in the States but of course, those in the States are a lot nicer and more complex like this little pic on the left that Mrs Pitt sent me when she was in Los Angeles. This is what she said about the drinks at Urth Cafe. "Check out the way they do the latte at this Urth Cafe. They make pictures with the milk and froth...leaf on one and a dolphin on the other. The best part is that the froth was thick enough that after drinking 1/3, the pic was still there!". Such a shame to drink and destroy the design, I'll probably admire it than to drink it!

Well, as for Leo's, can't say anything about the food as I didn't have any, but this looks like a good place to chill and catch up with friends, done over a cup of coffee and/or delicious gelato! By the way, whoever is reading this, how do you like your coffee (below are some sample answers!) ??? Do tell! Self censorship is advised! ;o)

He said : I like my coffee like my women: hot, strong, steamy.
She said : Chocolate, men, coffee - some things are better rich.
