Supercharge your Blog Comments with Disqus

Ok, as we know, most Blog commenting systems suck, especially Blogger! However if you follow this simple guide your blog will be the envy of your friends and fellow bloggers.

In this guide we will introduce you to the Disqus commenting system which is probably the most popular 3rd party commenting system out there.. and it's VERY impressive.

Before we get into how to install etc, lets first look at the advantages that Disqus Provides.

1) In built Spam filtering
2) Moderate all your comments from 1 place. Very handy if you run multiple blogs.
3) The ability to ban users by either email address and/or IP Address.
4) You can reply to comments via email so that you don't have to go to your blog to reply to a comment. Very handy if your on the road.
5) Threaded comments.
6) Live comments. If your site is busy people will not have to hit refresh to see new comments.
7) Whenever you leave a comment on another Disqus enabled site you will be able to see and track all your comments from the Disqus profile screen. This is great if you are trying to remember where you left that comment on a blog a while ago.
8) It's FREE!

There is a LOT more to Disqus than the list above but you can discover the benefits yourself.

Ok, so how can I install this on my blog?

Well it's very simple.

First Goto http://disqus.com and create a free account. Once done click on the Comments Section

As this is your first site you will probably be prompted for your blog details. If you already have a blog with Disqus simply click on the "Register a New Site" link.

This will bring us to a simple screen where you need to fill out your Blog Details. Once done click Continue

This is the main configuration screen where you can setup how you want Disqus to work. I normally select all features to get maximum benefit from it. I highly recommend that you get a free Akismet Key so that you can use their very powerful spam filtering system. Once done click continue.

Note: You can always go back after you have installed Disqus and change these settings on the fly.

Now we tell Disqus what blog system we are using. For the purpose of this guide I will be using Blogger. The operation is similar for other systems and you just need to follow the simply on-screen instructions.

First off we have to Download our Template from Blogger. You do this via the Layout, Edit HTML screen from your Blogs Dashboard. Click the Download link and save the file to your Computer.

Now click the Choose File button and select the above file that you have just saved.

You can now decide if you want Disqus to import your existing comments. I always import the comments so that I know I have a full set.

Once done click Continue

You should get a message saying that your Template was patched.

Now this is the important bit. In Step 1 below make sure you copy ALL the code in the little text window.

Now go back to Blogger and in the Edit HTML section of your Template, tick the Expand Widget Checkbox, and then paste the code from above into the Template Box below, OVERWRITING the existing code.

Hit the Save button to complete the process.

Now return back to your Disqus page and click the Import button to import your existing comments.

You will then be asked to authorize Disqus to import these comments. Click Grant

You will now be asked to confirm which of your blogs you want to import from. Select the correct one and click Import.

Once done you should see a message like the one below, informing you that your comments have or will be imported shortly.

Now we need to ensure that Disqus and Blogger comments are kept in sync so that if you ever decided to move away from Disqus all your comments will still be in Blogger.

Click the Enable button

Again you will be asked to grant Disqus Access to do this

Once granted click on the Blog that you want to Sync

You then get a message  informing you of any settings that you might need to make with your Blogger blog to ensure the smooth syncing of comments. Check you have these all set.

When you close the above box, you will be taken back to disqus and the button should have changed from Enabled to Disable. This means that you comments are now in sync with Blogger.

Now pop over to your blog and click on one of your posts to see your shiny new Comments System

As we mentioned earlier, Disqus is very powerful and you can customize a lot about it. The good thing is that when you make changes, you don't have to re-install the code again. All changes are dynamic.

Clicking on the Settings Tab allows you to change your Moderation Options

And the Look and Feel of your Comments Box

I hope you found this useful and hope to see more Disqus powered blogs.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate in contacting me or leaving a comment.

Do you think you'll add Disqus to your site?

  4. Just did it...Looks good, but biting nails waiting for Blogger comments to import. Thanks for the tutorial!

  5. It looked like Disqus had an issue yesterday. Seems to be fixed now

    ReplyDelete
  6. Glad you found it useful. Hopefully the import will work smoothly for you

  7. Disqus, comments are extremely easy to manage. You can remove unwanted comments or block notorious commentators from your dashboard. Their advanced spam and troll filtering make your discussions truly worry-free.

  8. Thanks for stopping by Saabira.

    Totally agree with you

    ReplyDelete
  9. I have been going back and forth over using Disqus and Echo. Both have their features, it all comes down to system resources used at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes, I really did not like echo at all. Far to slow to load and too
    confusing for users.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Disqus Comments is a comment system and moderation tool for your site. This service lets you add next-gen community management and social web integrations to any site on any platform. Hundreds of thousands of sites,

    ReplyDelete
  12. Goto Disqus and click on the Tools, option, then Import link, and then
there should be an enable sync button

    ReplyDelete
  13. I just looked on the Disqus site,

    http://status.disqus.com/

Says that blogger sync is delayed but are queued up. Guess it's just a
    case of waiting

    ReplyDelete
  14. Disqus is a great tool, I have it on many of my blogs already. It will only get better in the next few years..Disqus is a popular commenting platform...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow ... this is a great blog! Pretty informative as well! That has really helped me a lot in learning some of this stuff that I wasn't familiar with.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have gone through the above steps and everything looks wonderful (www.wlbconsultants.com) except for one tiny super important detail. Since the import, I cannot get any NEW POSTS to show any comment options at all - there is no way of commenting on new posts. All the old imported beautifully - I can comment, reply etc. But new post - nothing exists.

The only message I've had from Disqus (one-man support who's trying very hard, but has a lousy knowledge database) is "Have you checked enable comments per post?" - If I could find how, where and when to do that, it would be done in a heart beat. In Blogger? In Disqus? In the template? WHERE?!! Going crazy, been going on for 48 hours. Do you have any wisdom? I love this product, so badly want it to work. HELP?!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Done that, twice. Says it's synced and enabled (option is to disable). Says everything has imported successfully and won't let me run another import. Still cannot get anything to show for new post. All old posts are just fine, Disqus comments fully functioning. Which makes me think it is something really simple, I just cannot see where to check the appropriate box (either literally or figuratively!). Any other thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  18. The post is not actually giving any option to provide comments. You click on where it says 0 comments and you get to a dead end - nothing appears in which to write/make a comment. Even when Blogger was syncing properly yesterday and Monday, I had no option for comments on the new post. It's more than a syncing issue. But thanks for trying.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thank you. So glad you found it helpful.

Thanks for stopping by to comment.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks for the tutorial! The screenshots are perfect for simpletons like me.

  21. DISQUS does have some really cool options and allows for some great customizations.I like commenting using DISQUS.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, I agree, I now only comment on blogs that have Disqus.

    Thanks for stopping by

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well I think its easy to manage the comments section using Disqus Comment, its more reliable than other comment plugin. Thanks...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hey Georgia, thanks for stopping by.

Glad you enjoy using Disqus as well.

    ReplyDelete
  25. How long did it take your comments to import? I did mine last night around 9pm and all of my past comments are no longer showing up either through Disqus or Blogger.

I'm still also getting random comments via Blogger ~ they are showing up in my inbox, but not showing up on the blog. I'm wondering if there are other settings in my dashboard that I need to change/adjust.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I only had about 20 comments to import so it was quite quick.

    What is your blog address?

Also you can submit a Support Ticket here
    http://help.disqus.com/home

and they a pretty good at fixing issues.

Did you make sure your blogs comments are set to Allow Anyone via the
    Settings, Comments of your blog?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I had a LOT of comments to import. :) My blog address is
    http://homeschoolcreations.blogspot.com

I may try submitting a ticket. I have just been looking for a ballpark
timeframe before I contact them and look like an idiot. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Give it another 24hrs just in case.

When you go to Disqus and go to Tools, Import/Export

DO you see an status bar like in this screenshot. Does it say it's
    queued or processing?

    ReplyDelete
  29. In your blogger comment settings, do you have it set to "new posts do not have comments"?

    ReplyDelete
  30. No, I left mine as

    Comments SHOW
    Who can Comment - ANYONE
    Comment Moderation - NEVER
    Show Word Verification - NO

    ReplyDelete
  31. thank you for your blog.it's useful

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  34. You provide very good and easy learning about how we can install the DISQUS for our blog. Thanks a lot for this amazing post. Keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  39. I followed the instructions but it hasn't worked for me which is a shame

    ReplyDelete
  40. What went wrong. I know that some of Disqus was down today due to a server outtage but I think it's all back online now. Did you get any errors? How far did you get?

    ReplyDelete
  41. not really sure went wrong and i didn't get any errors to my knowledge. like i said i followed the instructions and once done i went to the blog and clicked on a post to go and see if it had been added and i found that it looked exactly the same as before which would suggest that it hasn't worked. I would just like to add by the way your instructions are very good and easy to follow so its most likely something i've not done

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks. I congratulate you for this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  43. As a Newbie to the internet, I am always searching online for stuff that can help me. Thanks for the information.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thank you for the tutorial. Seems like Disqus has made it easier since this tutorial but it was still helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  45. hi spoilergirl :-)
disqus changed the installation instructions :-(
i followed yours but i've only reached as far as when disqus asked about my blog platform. after that, everything else seems different. it looks as if disqus can only be installed as a widget? also, disqus will not patch your template anymore, per your instructions. you have to do it manually :-(

    ReplyDelete
  46. You can remove unwanted comments or block notorious commentators from your dashboard. Their advanced spam and troll filtering make your discussions truly worry-free...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Can you just have the troll filter on without having your comments moderated? I just need to block someone, but don't want to moderate any comments.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I just installed this and love it. Thanks so much for the advice. I had a troll problem, and I think this will work with the blocking option.

    ReplyDelete
  49. thanks for that wonderful post. i will do it later. i was trying a way on how to put a disqus on blogspot since i always see a wordpress. if this works i will only use the blogspot. thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  60. help! i setup a disqus account and followed your install instructions because i wanted to be aable to respond to individual comments.

all blog comments are visible at my disqus account, and also appear on the 'dashboard' section of my blogger account. however, in the public view of my blog, blogs all show "0 comments"!?!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yes, I think it really helps in monitering blog comments. Which ever blog or blog post I like, I post a comment to encourage them. Wherever I post comments, I mostly come across Disqus. They have really changed the blog industry...

    ReplyDelete
  62. I reckon its the best blog comment system.

OK I was able to smoothly add Disqus to my blog, but my posters aren't receiving email notifications of my replies. Is that a setting I have to change or does Disqus not do that?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yes, you'll need to set that in Disqus I believe. Contact their support as they are very helpful.
