Working on a couple of UFOs

Instead of starting another new quilt, I decided I would sort of finish off some UFOs.

This is a big one. It was described as a modern sampler quilt called Anthologie and was a quilt along with Southern Charm quilts. She has revamped the pattern and it's now for sale. I just went with fabric that I had and it's basically peaches and greens with other fabrics and colours thrown in. I guess I should take a better photo. Perhaps an outside photo but at the moment it's -6C outside with snow on the ground.

This is the other UFO I have been working on. I added a row or two more just to make it a bit bigger. I had thought that I would just go with how many blocks I had but it seemed a bit on the small size. The blocks are 7 inches finished and they are 3D bowties. I just need to lay them out again and sew them all together. If you have never made a 3D bowtie, all you need is 5 squares of equal size. Two squares for the background and 3 for the bowtie. I cut these at 4 inches and all the blocks are made from floral fabric with no repeats.

There is a sew along on Facebook where every Friday we can obtain a heart pattern a week. The blocks are 6.5 inches unfinished. So far, it's only been week 2. Here's the link in case anyone wants to join in. It may take some fiddling with printer settings to get the blocks to the correct size but then again, close is good enough.

Another 16-patch

I didn't need to start another quilt. I really didn't but...

I came across this pattern. I was going to throw it away or put it in a pile of stuff to donate to the guild but then, I started reading the instructions. It's a scrap quilt and I do have a whole lot of scraps. It's called Auntie Alice and is supposed to be scrappy, red and beige - not me at all.

The pattern calls for 18 blocks of 16 squares measuring 2.5 inches. The block will finish at  8.5 inches. Sounds familiar indeed. Those are the same dimensions as my colourful 16-patch that I am currently putting together. As you can see from the pattern, these blocks will be set on point and so after looking at the pattern and hemming and hawing, I decided to dive into my scraps and make a definite diagonal pattern to my 16-patch scrappy blocks.

The pattern also calls for 17 blocks cut 4.5 inches square. While I was ironing, I came across this piece of fabric so I took it downstairs to my sewing den and measured it. It's approximately 14" X 34" and that would yield more than enough squares for this project. I was sort of determined to use this piece. I don't know why but it just said 'use me.' I was prepared to find something else that went with it in case there wasn't enough fabric in this piece and I needed a few extra blocks. The pattern has these 4.5" squares in a red and since I am not a red person, navy seemed perfect. Also, I am planning on using a gray instead of the beige stated in the pattern for the sashing which measures at 8.5" X 4.5" which makes sense since those are the measurements of the blocks I have mentioned so far. I'm thinking of going scrappy navy with the outside triangles but since I'm not there yet, I will make a decision later. It's all about using up what I have.

It's probably a lap size and even though I don't need another quilt that size, perhaps one of my children will like it enough to use it once it's finished. The instructions don't give the final dimensions. It's a freebie pattern from The Quilt Patch that I received several years ago and I only came upon it because I was looking for another pattern. I really need to do some paper recycling in the pattern department. There is no way I am going to make all the things that I photocopied...once upon a time.

Slow

Well, I added a couple more blocks to this. It will get done one day. I  needed to take a photo so that I would know what colour blocks to make next and also, to see what colours I have enough of. In each block there is one colour and one neutral or lighter shade of the same colour. I have not repeated any of the colours but there are repeats of the lights - mainly white and off-white.

Easing back

Trying to do some sewing, but not wanting to hem the pants that my son handed me this weekend and not motivated enough to dive right in to the quilt that still needs borders. So...

I got some fabrics together and cut them up into 2.5 inch squares, sewed them together and now I have added two more blocks to this scrappy quilt. I really do like this and have go put more fabrics together. Scraps that are solid or read as such are what I'm looking for. I'm also knitting one of those frill scarves and will post a photo once it's finished.

At it again

Oh look, more scraps. Already sewn into 4-patches.

So, I sewed a couple of them together. They were just taking up space in one of my little boxes. I knew I had some but I didn't know exactly how many there were. I made them a while ago thinking that one day they would come in handy as a border treatment for a scrap quilt.

They have hung around long enough. I even forgot about them until I started thinking of making doll quilts. That's when I remembered that they could be a starting point. This is all in an effort to get rid of what's been hanging around way too long. I think I have enough for about 3 doll quilts.
This is just the start so stay tuned...They are cut 2 inch square so that one 4-patch is 3.5 inches. Another nice way to use up bits and pieces.

I will be linking up with the all Canadian Needle and Thread Network. Go have a look to see what others around the country are doing.

Wednesday update

When I have some time I am putting fabrics together (scraps, really) and cutting 2.5" squares for these 16-patch blocks. I really liked the one that was at the outdoor quilt show. There is another scrap quilt that I liked too but that one will have to wait.
I'm also adding borders on a quilt that I plan to put on the frame shortly but I will take a photo of it once the top is done.

A blogging friend, Hetty, was kind enough to send me some wonderful floral fabrics so I can...

make my bow tie quilt bigger. Pop on over for a visit. she has some lovely hexagon blocks completed.

Since it's Wednesday, I am linking up with
and with
Esther's blog.
