Julia made the short-sleeved version for summer, but Aster also includes a long-sleeved view. Both views feature a V-neck and button front, plus side bust darts for a fit that's relaxed but still neat.

New Colette Pattern

We've just received the new pattern, Laurel, from independent designer Colette in our store.

Laurel is a simple shift dress with some sweet details.  The straight shape includes side bust darts and vertical back darts for figure-skimming shaping that's not too fitted.  The pattern includes optional patch pockets and long gathered cuffs, as well as a pullover blouse option.

The simple lines of this pattern make it ideal for stripes, plaids, or large-scale designs, since the lack of intricate seaming lets these types of designs show to their best effect.

All Colette patterns come with clear, comprehensive instructions, set up in a book format and stapled into the pattern sleeve (no giant sheets of instructions to wrangle!).  Most are drafted with minimal ease, making them much more fitted than your typical commercial pattern, so check your measurements carefully and you'll get a lovely garment that's fitted to your figure.

You can get Laurel at Treadle, and a free booklet of extra options for Laurel is available at Colette's website: http://www.colettepatterns.com/shop/laurel-extras

Fresh new sewing books

Looking for a practical sewing guide that also comes with hip, unique patterns and projects?  Two books currently at Treadle will satisfy that need, with clear instructions and beautiful photography.

The Colette Sewing Handbook comes from author and designer Sarai Mitnick, creator of the popular line of Colette patterns.  Her design style is fitted, with clean, tailored lines that make a lovely backdrop to the wonderful little details judiciously applied to her garments.  A bow here, a pleat there, never too little or too much.

Gertie's New Book For Better Sewing brings vintage style to modern women.  Who says floral housedresses don't go with tattoos?  Gretchen Hirsch combines elements of retro and modern into a delectably chic look.

Each book outlines fundamental sewing techniques as well as walking you through the projects: dresses, skirts, blouses, and more.  Full-size patterns are included with the books.

Colette

I wrote about a month ago about Colette, the new line of patterns that we just started carrying. Since that time I managed to finish a model of one of their patterns - Eclair.
I used Kona Crush in Aqua and Anna Maria Horner's Diamond Mine in Pomegranate.
It was a fantastic pattern!
First of all the layout was very user-friendly.
It comes as a book with a folder pocket in the back for the pattern pieces.
The directions were well-explained for a beginner sewist and also had some great tips for a more experienced seamstress.

One more wonderful feature of these patterns is that they are written for modern clothing sizes.

Everyone knows that you don't choose the size you wear when you pick out a sewing pattern. Colette Patterns are now an exception to that rule.
Not only are the sizes true to the sizes you would by off the rack, but they range from size 0 to size 18, thus making Colette patterns accessible to all.
My only remaining problem is to decide which pattern from their catalog to make next.
Keep those pictures of your projects coming, we would love to see what you are making too!

Lots to catch up on

Well, as you might know, we're having a sale right now at Treadle Yard Goods.
We opened our doors in April of 1976, that make it our 34th birthday!
Please come by and join us in the celebration.
Everything in the store is at least 10% off, with some fabrics 20-50% off.

We also have some news in the pattern arena.
We have just added Colette Patterns and their line of 40's and 50's inspired garments are sure to be a big hit.
I have already found a couple that I would love to make myself!

Thirdly, and most exciting, we will have a visit from Anna Maria Horner in May.
There will be more information coming soon, but we can expect Ms. Horner to visit on the 22nd of May to talk a little and sign her newest book Handmade Beginnings.Anna Maria Horner has some beautiful fabrics out right now and one of the Material Girls worked up this delightful top with Little Folks Forest Hills in the Berry colorway.

Right now, however, it's too nice a day to keep blogging, so stay tuned for more exciting news on all fronts.
