1989 Topps Major League Debut #112: Dick Scott

Dick Scott

This guy was the 3rd Dick Scott to play in the big leagues, joining this guy and this guy.

PHOTO: This photo is pretty similar to the other A's photos in this set. But this one features a lady in the background stuffing her face with cotton candy! Jeez, at least wait until the game starts, fat-ass!

STAT: Scott appeared in 3 major league games but got only 2 plate appearances. He didn't get a hit but at least got an RBI.

ANAGRAM: Dick Scott, Athletics = Catch it - sold tickets

CAREER: 1/10

Just 3 games...

1989 Topps Major League Debut #62: Dann Howitt

Dann Howitt

PHOTO: Not a bad photo although his uniform looks airbrushed, even though I'm sure it's not.

STAT: Only Howitt and Rob Ducey appeared in every season from 1989 to 1994 and had fewer than 100 PAs each season (pitchers excluded.) If you're curious, 152 pitchers accomplished the feat.

ANAGRAM: Dann Howitt = Do want hit!

CAREER: 2/10

Do want hit, indeed. He finished with 264 career plate appearances and managed just 47 hits and 17 walks, for a .194 BA and .243 OBP. Ouch.

1989 Topps Major League Debut #54: Scott Hemond

Scott Hemond

PHOTO: That's quite an odd, overexposed photo, not to mention the weird net with nearby trees in the background.

STAT: Take a peek at the pitchers Hemond faced most often in his career. No wonder he didn't put up much in the way of offensive numbers. The top 20 guys are all among the better pitchers of his era.

CAREER: 2/10

Hemond was a pretty good prospect coming up but totaled only about one full season of plate appearances in his 7-year career.

1989 Topps Major League Debut #7: Larry Arndt

Larry Arndt

This card starts a string of guys who barely appeared in the majors, and that's one of the reasons why this set is so cool. Without this particular set, many of these guys might never have had a major league baseball card. But here they are, starting with Larry Arndt.

PHOTO: Not much to say about the photo except that Arndt appeared in just 2 games in the majors, so it's surprising that Topps has this photo. I wonder if it's from spring training?

STAT: Arndt's major league debut came on June 6th, just like the card says, and then on June 7th, he got his first and only major-league hit, a single off Frank Viola. That was his last game in the bigs.

CAREER: 1/10

Two games in the big leagues, although he played one at 1B and the other at 3B.
