Display 28/2011

Just a quick line to set me back on course after I was quite unwillingly knocked off the said ‘course’ due to a pesky migraine and the upheaval of staging a display. Ok, so the display wasn’t as big as last year, but boy has it caused a lot of stress, exhaustion, and a mountain of muddles. Oh, and it ruined my Birthday!

I don’t think I could ever (and I mean EVER) do another display on this scale again. (Well maybe I would consider it if I were to be paid- hehe!) Even the one I did last year which took over the whole church didn’t seem as much work as this one- or was that just old Father Time working overtime again, to blur my memory of all the horrors of last year? Actually would father time be the one messing with my memory or would it be the fella who sorts out the New Year- anyway I’m not going to start arguing with myself again….Well whoever it was it worked, as I was silly enough to willingly agree (yes, I was quite enthusiastic!) to do it all over!!!

Anyroad I did it, I’ve just about survived and here are the pictures….

By the way my theme was post war.
early 50's bits n' bobs
well apart from the tea trolley and the bakelite cake stand (I know, bakelite cake stand- fancy hey!)
my mini shop window...
... Unfortunately I forgot to add stuff to the walls. It housed the smaller items like make-up, jewellery, men’s bits, and some of my coronation tat... well just stuff that could go walk-about.
Mid to late forties bit's- I didn't plan for it to look so drab!

some of me wedding dresses.

most of my display in full.

one of the nippers, Edmund.

A close up of some 50's bits.
Excuse the 'Please do not touch' signs but you can never be too careful! Plus I don't want any Tom, Dick or Harry touching my treasures with their sticky mitts- of course I don't mind if people ask!!! I'm not that much of a stinker.

Well I must go as I have more stuff to put away...

Victory Rolls and A Jumper.

For years I have been cooking milk rolls ( in my opinion the wartime food equivalent of that very famous and much desired hair style, the Victory Rolls), and always cooking them with victorious results, but I think this must be my first successful attempt at the proper victory rolls!!! I heartily shout ‘Hurrah, hurrah’ while dancing the sailor’s hornpipe.

Wartime fodder- Milk Rolls.

So what did they come out like?...

…'ahh alright, I suppose!' said with an unenthusiastic shrug of the shoulders. Haha, no I shall share the pictures as I am well and truly pleased as Mr. Punch giving ‘old Judy’ a good wallop.

Still the same 'part set' from Sunday...

Anyone notice the new setting? Well, I fancied having a proper portrait. You know, like the ones people use to have taken to mark their birthdays, engagements and the like.  Ok, so I’m not engaged and I have missed my 21st by nearly a year, but why should that stop me, hey! I had hoped for better- it’s a bit hard with out direction, and when you’re moving more than a fiddlers elbow to set the self timer, you just loose patience (well I do at any rate!). Mind you I don’t think I would take direction from a photographer very well either, so I have to make do or lump it!

Showing off my Yellow lacy knit.... Which I actually finished knitting in February, but not entirely completed (crochet edgings, sewing up) until quite recently.

The next photo is my favourite, for some reason  looking at it I don't feel like I have changed one bit from how I was when I was a nipper. Strange! It's probably only me who can see it or is it how I feel!?

Well  my hair has changed- I was so fair!
So there you are my very first Victory Rolls!
Well that's all from Tickety here...

Hi Ho folks,
I am still around and trying to catch up with all the lovely blogs in between ‘this girls’ rather sleepy moments- must be going through a bad patch, as the slightest amount of activity exhausts me- and it’s the first time in weeks (and weeks) that I haven’t set my hair all over….cor, something must be wrong!
I decided yesterday whilst in the shower that I would try a pin curl set, which will be the first in about five years. (you see, I get all my good ideas whilst in the shower!) Well, I started with great gusto, found my lovely stash of ye olde bobby pins, sectioned the front out and started pinning away, but unfortunately such enthusiasm waned after the sides and I gave up (‘just like that’, said in the Tommy Cooper manner)-Why? Well, I have too much hair! Not that I’m complaining or nuffin, I’m very grateful to have such a lot of the stuff, but it does make setting a real faff. Oh I do envy the gals who can set their hair so beautifully on just a few rollers. For a decent set on my noggin it takes about thirty rollers-No kidding!

This morning I quickly put up the back using my trusty metal rollers which gave enough curl to see me through the day. The front on the other hand was super- mind you I did keep the pin curls in all day and night! I brushed the sides up, then brushed the front and pinned. After unpinning the back (which was still slightly damp) I brushed and decided to keep the back smooth and plain, as the front was rather wayward and reaching for the sky (Oh, I love that film- isn’t Kenneth lovely?!) so I brushed it down and under and kept it tidy with a long hair clip given to me by my great aunt!

And here be the pictures…
Actually, I don’t know why I am bothering to show any of them, as none of them show me curly top very well! Ah well, me and Donald the wheelie donkey had fun. Is Wheelie even a word? Well anyhoo, Donald is on wheels.
Relaxing next to my beloved meat safe,
Finding a new book….
…Yes this book could change your life too!

Much jollity was shared- making Donald’s ears as high as my hair!
back to the knitting, TTFN

Mystic Mugs Horoscopes- Taurus

Taurus the Bull
April 20th to May 20th

The sun passes through Taurus (the Bull)- the second sign of the Zodiac- between April 20th and May 20th. The riling planet of Taurus is Venus. These people are rather heavy in build, with short necks, and of middle height or under. They have pleasant singing or speaking voices. The women are often very good looking but with a coarse type of beauty. These people are very different to those of the preceding sign, Aries.
Taurus people are slow, conservative, stubborn and obstinate. It is a fortunate sign for money and business. The Taurus man will work very hard to get money and will be very careful how he spends it, without actually being mean.
He can be just as calculating as the Aries man is impulsive. He is a hard driving businessman, thinking of most things in terms of cash. He may be affectionate and kind in his home circle, but he will have very little time for sentiment in business. As an employer he makes a just but hard master, and so is often respected, but not liked.
The bad types of Taurus men are difficult to get on with, hard as granite, unforgiving, sullen, bad-tempered…. (Anything else?!) Both men and women of Taurus love good living, heavy meals and luxurious surroundings. There is nothing ethereal about these Taurus people. Their homes are usually very comfortable; they love easy chairs and cushions. One can often spot a Taurus man by the way he selects the most comfortable  chair in a room, there is a streak of selfishness in these people, but at the same time they are warm-hearted, generous and hospitable.
Taurus rules the throat, and may be for this reason, when a Taurus person is in a bad temper he or she will mot speak for hours, even days or weeks. A Taurus child who has this characteristic should be taken firmly in hand when very young.
These people are good patrons of the theatre. They love music, art and singing. Many famous singers come under the sign Taurus. The men born under this sign are fitted for routine work, banking and accountancy, but they do better in business, buying and selling anything from a handkerchief to a house. Their commercial life begins in the schoolroom, where they sell their discarded books for money or wanted articles.
A Taurus man is always ready to sell something to a friend at a profit. When working for an employer he is painstaking and conscientious, but his shrewd mind will not allow him to remain in a subordinate position for long to accumulate money for others. So, although Taurus men are not enterprising, they are usually owners of businesses.
In love affairs a man who falls under this sign is cautious and honourable. He does not often fall for a pretty face solely, although he appreciates beauty. Neither does he like a clever woman. Being born under this substantial, cautious sign, hen wants his money’s worth in marriage, so that first of all, the women he marries must be domesticated.
He is not changeable in love affairs. He may take many girls about, but he has not fallen in love with them, and he rarely talks of love and marriage until he definitely made up his mind about the girl. When engaged, and as a husband, he is very jealous, often domineering, but attentive and generous. He can always be depended upon to give a woman a good time, and this he will do for the woman of his choice, both before and after marriage. He loves social life, and is always at his best when in the company of women.
The women of this sign are very practical, but are better fitted for home life than business life. When a Taurus woman marries she promptly gives up business, as she realises that the home is the right and best place for her. It is possible that when a little Taurus girl thinks of marriage she visualises the house and home and the man may be missing from this picture.
This does not mean that Taurus women are mercenary; they are not really, but they do want and expect security and solidity in marriage. In business Taurus girls are not enterprising; they usually drift into some kind of routine work. Success is most likely in secretarial work, millinery, dressmaking, or as a florist.
Taurus women are very good housekeepers and are always proud of their homes. They are also good cooks and spend money very wisely. The Taurus woman, like the man, makes a jealous, domineering partner, but at the same time she is a very good wife. She will love to entertain her husband’s friends, and will do everything in her power to further his business interests.
She has a great love of children, but the family is usually a small one. She is a good and wise mother while the children are young, but rather a tyrant towards them when they are grown up. It is one of the bad traits of a Taurus woman that no girl is enough for her son and no man is good enough for her daughter.
Even when marriage is not a success the Taurus person does not readily seek divorce, but the Taurean’s partner may do so. Children of this sign are seldom brilliant, but docile, slow, and plodding. They are often dimpled and pretty when young, but grow plainer with age. They are easy to train. Possibly as they are slow in play and work they have less time to get into mischief. The latter part of school like is usually successful.

Yours

VE Day 8th May 1945

Wasn’t the end (VJ 15th Aug) but it was a start, thank goodness!

Just a little something from my collection....

Sunday, 1 May 2011

Just a quick hello and a post of badly lit/quality photos of today’s outfit….

I’m not feeling quite up to doing much at the moment as I am k-knackered after putting on a small-ish display of some of my collection for a small local 40’s do. (for some reason smallish is not quite the same as small- ish! Hehe don’t ask- my brain is too muddled!)

Pictures of the display shall be shown in the week (fingers crossed), as will some snaps from my mini one day holidays!

So here’s what this young lady wore today-

Dress: early forties- but could be a little earlier and unfortunately has been taken up at some point. I shall take some better photos soon-ish to show off the details. It has Bows and everyfink!

Hat: late thirties/early forties. I’m ashamed to say it’s the first time I have worn it! (gasp and slap hands) It was a Christmas gift from Ma and Pa quite a few years ago, and with the reason of it not being worn due to the fact I thought it didn’t suit.  I must have change as I think it’s rather lovely on now (hehehe- if I do say so myself!) It must be my growing hair- well who knows. All I can say is that its ‘living quarters’ will be changed from an inaccessible hat box to one of my ‘easy to hand’ hat boxes! Ahh I do like a nice hat. ;-)

Anyhoo must dash, food to be eaten, tv to be watched, and feet to be put up!
Never mind about putting the display away......that can wait!

Cheerio Folks
