Blue Monday: Blue Rolling Thingies...

Funny title? That's because what I want to show you on this beautiful Blue Monday at Smiling Sally's blog is something that is often mislabeled as a carpet ball. The proper term is carpet bowl. But it's not what most people think of as a bowl, either. Let's take a look at the following picture, and then I'll explain. While I have an antique carpet bowl that is put away where I can't get to it and is different from what I'm about to show you, I also have these three reproductions in blue and white porcelain that were very reasonably priced. Maybe you've seen similar ones for sale in shops or online...

I've heard and read a lot of conflicting reports, but in a nutshell, carpet bowls belong to a game that is played outside on a lawn (termed carpet). While some have tried to tie its ancient roots to Egypt, it has been played extensively in Great Britain for centuries. Upon cold or inclement weather, the wealthier players move inside onto indoor courts while those players in smaller towns or of lesser purse might play in social halls. There are regulation outdoor bowls that are very hard. These bowls are larger than the indoor ones. According to one antiques dealer, the Scots played with bowls that are either striped with plaid or sponged with color. Here is an example I found of a blue and white plaid one that is for sale online. I love the plaid ones...

And here is an antique porcelain carpet bowl that sold on eBay...

Someone did a wonderful job with the color of the blues on this bowl. I could stare at it all day. Notice the crazing on the antique surface. While crazing sometimes denotes age, I've also seen porcelain that has been deliberately crazed to look old. So be careful when purchasing.

There's one thing about my carpet bowls -- you won't see them lolling around on the lawn or floor. Instead, they like to hang around in different vignettes...

They enjoy rolling from place...

To place...

To place...

And sometimes they like to perch on top of a candlestick in place of a candle...

And enjoy sitting next to the kitchen wallpaper because they have a similar look...

And feel...

But no matter how they are grouped...

They remain a conversation piece and a nice pop of blue happiness...

For anyone who loves blue and white...

As much as I do...

Thanks for visiting me today on Blue Monday. Please join the other participants at our gracious hostess, Smiling Sally's blog to see all sorts of blue posts today. You can get there by clicking here.

Oh, and one last thing. the ever-clever Mr. Magpie found the music we are listening to today. It's called "The Thieveing Magpie." LOL! Or "La gazza ladra." Don't you love it? I think, however, it should be called, "The Shiny Object Overture" which sounds a lot more familiar around these parts! ;-)

Happy Blue Monday!

Warmly,

Mrs. Magpie (Sheila)

I think the word bowl comes from the french "boule", where they play a similar game. And in Italy it is bocce. I love the English carpet bowls because they are porcelain.

I'll file this one under "Who knew?"

I can't imagine the idea of these being bowling balls. Maybe I'm just not awake enough yet.

They sure are pretty though.

I've seen blue and white balls in bowls before, but I never knew that they were blue and white bowls! When you tire of them, send them to me. Thanks for sharing. Happy Blue Monday!

Thanks for introducing me to carpet bowls. I had never heard of them before. If I had seen them before, I would have thought there were merely decorative.

Very interesting...this sounds like a game we play outside with balls called Bocce Ball, but yours are much prettier. I would not want to use these for fear of them getting broken.

Thanks for the information on carpet balls. Yours are lovely.
A few months ago they had a bowl of them on sale at the thrift shop. They were just a dollar each, but I hesitated as I was low on cash. Of course, when I went back they were gone. Oh well, maybe I get another chance again...

So how was Piggy Fest? Looks like you were having MUCH fun! Hey...talk about FUN...Ms. Magpie I have joined the ARMY! Can you believe it? Stop over...and you will see....

Neabear said...

What is this about Lady Jane joining the ARMY? I guess I will have to go and see. These blue rolling thingies are pretty. Makes me think of Bocce ball or Petanque (I think that is how it is spelled. It was not in my dictionary here by the computer.) Anyway, Annie better keep an eye on those rolling thingies.....

Wow, I've never seen such beautiful carpet bowls. I've watched the game of bowls being played, but it was always with wooden or plastic "regulation" bowls. Yours are really lovely - thanks for sharing all the photos. And Happy Blue Monday!

Hi Sheila
These are soooo nice! I love how you have been able to move them around to suit the area. The blue one looks sooo good with the "matching" wallpaper..the grouping and on the candlesticks.
I didn't know thats what they were called. I've seen some for sale actually...hmmmm...I will have to look for some now.
Great look.
THank you for sharing on Blue MOnday.

You gave me some good ideas about the china Sheila. I AM going to go back and pick up the rest of the china...and do something with them if I have to. When I made my Garden Teaparty Bird Feeders with the teapots I drilled through them and plates..sooooo I could drill and put some together. Oh I do hope they still have some!

Have a lovely Blue and happy Day

Hi Sheila, I have played bowls only once in Essex. Your collection is so pretty, and looks lovely with all your Blue and White China and on the Candlesticks. The antique one is gorgeous. Did you see all the snow in London today?, Big Ben looks so pretty with the falling snow, but I am afraid the city has come to a standstill, no buses, trains or planes. Have a lovely day, hugs, Kathy.

Missy Wertz said...

Thank you for telling us about them Sheila! I have seen them and did not realize that is what they are. I have heard about the game before and about collectors of the antique balls. But had no real knowledge about them or the size beyond that. Yours are very pretty!

I hate to be redundant, but I too learned something new today. I wonder where I have been as I have never seen them either (unless I overlooked one not knowing what the heck it was! I think they look very cool on the candlesticks!

My kids play a game in a long hallway at the cottage with tennis balls and plastic cups. Does this count?

Great BM post. The blue & white bowl is the prettiest to me!

You are just too smart Sheila ! LOL . I just thought they were glass balls used for decorating.Didn't know they had a purpose.

Good Evening, Ladies! Thanks for your visits! I read and enjoyed every comment. :-) And definitely chuckled at some. I am no expert on this, but I just got interested because I have seen these bowls for years at antique shops and in magazines. The plaid ones are usually expensive, so when I found the repros I opted for some of them.

Most of the ones you see for the sport now are brown. Not sure of the composition, but they are very heavy. I have one I bought at a shop in Amelia Island. The repros are probably smaller than regulation balls, but that's what they are reproduced to resemble. I wouldn't try playing with them, however. They would probably crack in about a New York minute!

Thanks again for dropping by to visit. I enjoyed visiting you as well.

Sweet dreams...

XO,

Sheila :-)

Hi Sheila,
You told me that you have the same carpet balls as I do - and yes - you do!! I love the way you have displayed them.I love the look of them displayed on the candlesticks. Great idea!
I love your wallpaper - what a beautiful compliment to the blues that you have. I am positively drooling over here! Great post.
Blessings to you,
Kymber

The Quintessential Magpie said...

Lindsay, neat that your mom has these, too! A word of warning, if they are repros, I wouldn't advise playing with them. LOL! They don't seem to be very sturdy, and I think that they would crack on the first hit. :-/ Now, if you use the regulation bowls, yes, I think that would work fine. :-) Just don't want them to break on you! :-)

Kymber, thanks so much about the paper. It was here when we bought the house. :-) Glad you like it, and isn't it something that we both have these??? :-)

XO,

Sheila :-)
