At my 36 week appointment (9 months) I was dilated to a 2+ and the nurse practioner said I would go SOOO early, and I wouldn't even make it to October (it was sept 19th). Well, I tried to ignore her, because really, theres no way of truly predicting when a baby will come. But it's really hard to not get excited about a baby coming (and let's be honest, excited to not be pregnant anymore) so I waited a few days, then I got everything ready for our little ladies arrival. I set up the bassinet, washed some baby clothes, and rearranged our bedroom to accommodate all of the babes things. So, it was now just a waiting game.
October arrived and I was still pregnant. I went to my 38 week appointment and the Dr checked me, I was now at a true 3. Then my due date came and went, which hadn't happened with my boys (Hudson was 11 days early, and Ramsey was 3 days early). I had another appointment and was now dilated to a 4! But she was still quite snug and not ready to make her be appearance.
With the boys births I remember waking up at a certain time (early in the morning) with a GIANT contraction and that was my marker for when labor started. But Isla was different. I remember feeling like labor was starting while I was sitting in church, feeling faint, but uncomfortable contractions. But then by sunday night the contractions had subsided. Monday I took the boys to their gymnastics classes, and I moved and ran (an maybe jumped on the trampoline a little bit) trying to stay active to get labor moving. I still had the faint contractions that were beyond uncomfortable, but not consistent enough to go to the hospital. Then tuesday (I taught preschool... blah) and was getting even more anxious to see my little girl. The contractions were coming stronger, longer, and I was able to track them. I was beyond uncomfortable and slightly annoyed because this was my third baby, and everything that was happening was very unknown to me. Then wednesday morning come, Matt went off to school to study (he had a test that day) and I started to time my very consistent, very painful contractions. I like to wait until the last minute to go to the hospital, that way I can do most of my laboring at home, distracted, and in my own space. With Matt being at school, contractions being one minute long and 3 minutes apart, and me being home alone laboring with the boys with me, I decided to call Matt and have him take me into the hospital. But when we arrived everything stopped. I had one minor contraction every half an hour. They checked me and I was at a 6+, almost a 7. The staff admitted me, and I requested to have a nurse midwife and they just happened to have the best nurse midwife working that day, Susan Stone, the same gal that delivered Hudson! Nothing was happening, and Susan gave me some tips to get things going (I'll spare you the details) and still after over an hour there wasn't a lot of change. Susan then suggested that she would break my water, about 20 minutes after that I REALLY started to feel every contraction, hard and beyond painful. I felt this way for about two hours. Then after a good 40 minutes of pushing my girl made her debut into the world! FINALLY!
