ZZ: Does She or Doesn’t She?

It’s been such fun to watch our baby panda boy grow and develop here at the San Diego Zoo, and no one can deny that babies with milk moustaches of any species are beyond cute! But with five pandas in residence, a lot goes on here day to day. Everyone is thriving, including Gao and the “Sister Act,” Su Lin and Zhen Zhen. The girls have been charming visitors in the viewing area since just after breeding season, and over these last few weeks especially we’ve had lots of visitors from all over the world as so many American families are in back-to-school mode. The crowds have lessened, the weather is cooling off, and ZZ and Su Lin are doing just fine.

But what of ZZ? The panda narrators are watching and listening carefully to verify what we’ve heard, but it appears that the girl, when in a contended play mode, will hum! Not a tune, just a single, short note at random times. At least two of us have heard it, and I’ve tried to sternly catch the eye of the visitors who must be doing this, but no, it’s not been visitors. It’s intriguing, since it seems unlike any other vocalization that we panda narrators have heard Zhen make, regardless of the season, and seems to occur only during calm times. You’ll recall that most panda vocalizations are made during the rare times that pandas are together: mother-and-cub, breeding season, or when they come across one another unexpectedly in the wild. Otherwise, there’s no one around to hear them talk, so they don’t.

This is a fun new “trick” for ZZ to do to us narrators, as apparently no one else has heard her “hum.” This is understandable, since the pandas are always actively interested in their keepers and their activities, and the researchers have been focusing their work on Bai Yun and the cub. It is panda narrators who sit near the bears for extended hours each day and are more likely to note something quiet, rare, and subtle. Are we hearing from Zhen Zhen what we think we’re hearing? Like giant pandas, we’ll keep a sharp ear and try to gather more information.

New panda cub, Sept. 5, 2009.

XI'AN, China, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- A giant panda who delivered a male cub last year has given birth to a female cub at a breeding center in northwest China, officials said.

Nine-year-old Zhuzhu, whose name means "pearl," gave birth to her newest cub Friday at the Shaanxi Rare Wild Animals Rescue and Breeding Research Center in Xi'an, China's state-run news agency, Xinhua, reported Saturday.

Zhuzhu was artificially inseminated, as was 6-year-old Lousheng, who gave birth three weeks ago to a male and a female cub.

"The recent baby boom indicates we have made some progress in pandas' semen collection and freezing as well as prenatal care," center spokesman Jin Xuelin said.

The center now has 21 pandas with another 180 being cared for in zoos throughout the world, Xinhua reported. An estimated 1,590 pandas live in the wild in China, most of them in the forests of Sichuan and the provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu.

China to mark 140 years of panda discovery

BEIJING: China is to retrace the steps of the French missionary who made giant pandas known to the West to mark the 140th anniversary of their discovery by the outside world, state media said Tuesday.

Pandas were virtually unknown outside China until 1869 when Pere Jean Pierre Armand David described one which had been shot by hunters in Ya’an, Sichuan province, triggering more than a century of untiring fascination with the black and white bears.

Panda enthusiasts can join a 350-kilometre (220-mile) hike from the Sichuan capital Chengdu to Ya’an to follow in the footsteps of the Catholic missionary and naturalist to educate people about the endangered animals and their protection, Ya’an tourism official Li Yamei told Xinhua news agency.

The group would depart on August 15 and was expected to arrive at the giant panda research centre in Ya’an on August 25.

The pandas were moved there temporarily while a new breeding centre is built after the main Wolong research centre was largely destroyed in last year’s Sichuan earthquake, Xinhua said.

A festival featuring more than 40 films on pandas and other wildlife would also open on August 19 in Ya’an as part of the anniversary activities.

There are about 1,590 pandas living in the wild around the country, mostly in Sichuan and the northern Shaanxi and northwestern Gansu provinces. A total of 180 have being bred in captivity, Xinhua reported.

San Diego's Panda Gives Birth

San die go zoo

San Diego Zoo officials announce birth of fifth panda cub.

It has been a busy 24 hours for giant panda researchers at the San Diego Zoo.

Early Wednesday, just before 5 a.m., the team was glued to the zoo's closed-circuit camera placed inside Bai Yun's birthing den as they watched the giant panda give birth to her fifth cub.

Even though the cub is number five, it's "just as exciting as our first," said veterinarian Meg Sutherland-Smith.

The gender of the baby is not known. Researchers won't be able to get their hands on the pink, tiny and hairless cub until several weeks from now when Bai Yun feels comfortable enough to start regularly leaving the birthing den.

As long as the mother appears to be caring for the new cub as she has her previous cubs, zoo staff will not intervene.

Bai Yun is pregnant with cub (2009)

The zoo announced last week that Bai Yun was pregnant. Using a thermal camera and an ultrasound, zoo staff spotted images confirming that she was expecting. Ultrasound video clearly showed a tiny little panda, conceived naturally in April, moving its paws and tucking its head in.

Mother and cub are likely to remain in the birthing den, off and on, for the next four months. You can watch them through the zoo's panda cam online.

San Diego was caught up in panda-mania in 1999 when Hua Mei, Bai Yun’s first club, was the first giant panda cub to be conceived by artificial insemination and the first American-born panda cub to survive to adulthood.

She is now in a breeding program in China along with her brother, Mei Sheng, who was born in San Diego in 2003 through natural breeding. Two of Bai Yun's other offspring, Su Lin and Zhen Zhen, born in 2005 and 2007 respectively, remain at the San Diego Zoo.
