Coffee Table Styling.

I am very excited to be participating

in

Cindy @ Rough Luxe and

Mary Ann @ Classic Casual Home

Project design Series...

They have asked 12 bloggers to join

them in How to Style a coffee table...

Here are some of the bloggers who are

joining in this series...

When I style a coffee table I actually don't think about what I do...
I just play until it feels right..
I really had to put my thoughts together to explain this..

Its about the balance, color and size of objects you place onto the table...a creative vignette can be arranged or styled by following a simple rule of three.
When creating your coffee table arrangement, its important to consider height, scale, and color... try choosing 3 objects or groupings of objects that go together in the room.
If you have something that's to small, place it together with other objects by using a tray or  books like I did in the picture above...

Again, I used three objects on the right and three objects on the left side, even though there are two books and one piece of coral it feels like one object within the three...creating balance and scale.
I always like using coral in my displays...

The larger glass container has larger shells in it...and the smaller one has smaller shells balancing out the three objects to the right...

Triangular composition is created with the coffee table in the foreground and lamp table in the background.
Triangle composition seems to work well in all design.
I hope this all makes sense!

Its hard to see this because of the mirror coffee table, but again 3 objects on the left...the three books and coral acting as one and the objects in the tray...even though there are 3 objects in the tray it becomes one...

I think odd numbers are more interesting...
The rule of three is a guide line that can be bent or broken.

I guess I like using trays

Again I applied the same rule...3 objects on the left...even though the small plate has 3 candles it becomes one object....
The two books with the jar on top also act as one....
But, there are 9 objects on this table...

The rule of three is a simple way to add depth and visual interest to your home....

Rules are made to be broken and sometimes the scale of your arrangements don't always allow you to follow it...
Take pictures of your arrangements, the camera will tell you if its in balance.
I use this tool all the time...

Wainscoting...a client up-date

I wanted to update you on a clients home...
I've had so much fun working on this home....
Its very rewarding when clients love everything about the finished product....
Sometimes it can be a challenge to bring together the husband's taste and the wife's taste when they are on opposite scales of design...
The wife likes country farm....
She would love to take an old barn and turn it into a home...the rustic, the better...
The husband likes a refined feel...he likes traditional, french style...but they both love red, white and blue...

These are the before pictures of their living room.

They both agreed that they wanted their living room to be on the casual side and they both wanted wainscoting...

I had the wainscoting painted Dunn Edward's Swiss Coffee...
I tried so many different whites and they just looked dirty....
This white is a warm white...

We are still waiting for a few pieces to come in and art work and then I need to stage it for photos... but I thought you might want a little sneak peek!

ORC REVEAL!

I can't believe I got this done in time....
If some of you don't know, I joined the One Room Challenge ...
I had 6 weeks to redecorate a room...
Linda from Calling it Home Blog came up with this idea and its become quite a thing!
You can check out the other bloggers who participated here.

I bought a new sofa, new pillows and reupholstered my ottoman....
My lamps are vintage and so is much of the pottery...the flag is also vintage...my husband had it framed for me....its missing two states...its so cool!
It's a little big for the area...but we love it!

The lanterns in the back are new and so is this vintage porcelain vase.

The little blue jar is from Anthro.
The pillow on the left is a Robert Allen fabric and the right is a Ralph Lauren.

This space was a challenge...anything but white looked to busy...

This is my new table and chair pads....
The vintage pot in the middle is a porcelain piece that I love.

Unfortunately I still have tile!
Someday I'll redo the whole kitchen.

I found this island at an antique store...I didn't do a thing to it...I decided to leave the worn patina and marble alone.

I hope you enjoyed the tour of my family room and kitchen....
If you want to see the before pictures check out week one here, week two here, week three here, week four here and  week five here.

Also..
Don't forget to check out Linda's blog, Calling it Home....you can see all the other bloggers who  participated here.

Sneak Peak...before and after

Do you remember this home I was working on?
I know...
I'm not very good at showing you images of the room after its done...so I thought I would show you a small glimpse of it before its staged for pictures..
You can check it out the post here and here

This is a picture of the room before we painted and
 bought this pretty rug..

We had the room painted a soft light blue...

I love this antique clock we found at Eloquence...

The coffee table came out perfect..it has a marble top and it was custom made.

This is the fabric we used for drapery,
it has a pale blue and cream stripe in it.

Hopefully I will have professional pictures done soon...

I'm going to follow along with Linda at Calling it Home and participate in the...
 The One room challenge...
Part of the challenge is having the room done in 6 weeks....
I'm going to redo my family room and kitchen...

Client Up-Date

Hi there...I was thinking about all of you and  thought I would share what I've been up to.....
I was at HomeGoods today and saw these great pillows...
I'm trying to get into the mood for Fall, but it's 70 degrees here and I'm still in sandals and short skirts...the last thing I'm thinking about is putting on a sweater and lighting a fire...but I'm trying to get into the swing of Fall!

I thought I would share with you one of the projects I've been working on..This is an image of my clients home before we started....notice the two windows...the one on the right has a double window?

We took out this wall and we added another window above to create balance with the larger window on the other side of the room.

Here is the after picture...it opens up the whole room and you can see a glimpse of the window we added to the right.

We added the wainscoting and were going to paint it white...I've been having paint samples made to see which color looks best...I did try White dove, but to creamy...
I have also been choosing a table top paint sample for a custom dining table I am having made for this client...

I will show you that soon.

This is our inspiration photo...
The wood walls should be done within two weeks and than the painting will start. OK..so I'm going to go buy some pumpkins and try to imagine what it feels like to have a Fall!

Living room up date

I thought I would show you my new tables and candelabra...there not really new....but I'm a little late in posting and sharing them with you...the coffee table is from Bliss and I found my side table at an antique store..the top is marble...

Some of these pillows were used to stage our studio...the new owners want to buy the furniture and accessories so I'm going to have new ones made...
Oh darn!
Just kidding..
I love it...
I'm always changing things up!

The vintage door has been sold to a client...

I got my Candelabra from Aiden Gray...
I know..this picture isn't the best... Sorry!

I love my dog... but she peed on my rug...don't you love it?
I wasn't very happy with her!
I have tried everything to clean it and get rid of the smell..
I even put a bounce sheet under the cowhide to see if it would take the smell away... but I still get a whiff of it every once in awhile...
I'm going to have to replace the rug...
Its time anyways...
I've had the cowhide for awhile and I would like to add more color... Now, just to find one that I love and to fit my budget...that always makes it a little challenging!
Thanks for stopping by...
Julie

Staging to sell our studio.

My husband and I had bought a ranch style home 11 years ago and turned into a photography studio....We decided to sell it and I had to stage it to look more like a home...

In one of the bedrooms I placed a screen behind this chair to add some interest.....I love this antique hand painted screen...its so pretty!

This is the kitchen...I know it looks like this bread board is floating in space...but its on a glass table that has columns.

I'm going to keeping the pine cabinet in the back for my office.

This room was an office and I had to make it look like it was a family room... I took my old blue sofa and made it back into a family room....that's a painting I had painted years ago!

This is the living room...I love this chair!

We kept my husbands portraits hanging on the wall.

We sold it  within 6 weeks with 4 offers....the couple who bought it wants to buy everything in it...including the accessories!

My hubby will be opening his new studio in Westlake Village which will be only 20 minutes from home.

Thanks for stopping by..
Julie
