WHAT IS IT: Mini boombox Bluetooth speaker
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: New
PREVIEW or REVIEW: Review
HOW GOOD IT IS: The speaker feels solid, and is almost identical to the Bose and Jambox in size and shape. There are inputs and the power switch arranged neatly along the side and a LOT of identical buttons on top that are virtually impossible to read under most conditions. The front and rear are covered in a nice speaker cloth while the rest of the case feels like a hard composite material of some type. It feels like it would survive a lot of abuse.
Pushing the power switch causes the speaker to emit a loud and very low frequency sound that amazes and leads to strong expectations, although after the first few demonstrations I wish the sound effects could be turned off. Pairing was easy (despite the fact that the instruction manual was incorrect as to which buttons to push).
HOW WELL DOES IT WORK: So how does it sound? Compared to the two other speakers mentioned above, very favorably. The midrange is clear, the top end is crisp and the bass is deep down for a speaker this small. The Bose knocks your socks off a little more when you first hear it but after you start listening to that famous Bose overprocessing the music gets tiresome to listen to for extended periods. The Jambox sounds closer to the Sharkk, but does it sound any better for $100 more? No, I don’t think so.
SIMILAR TO: Bose Soundlink Mini, Jawbone Jambox among several others
DO YOU NEED IT: I have several Bluetooth mini speakers located throughout my home so I can play audio or a video soundtrack wherever I am. I also like to take a mini speaker with me when I visit friends so I can share music or other audio with them. Why? Because the speakers on any smartphone or tablet are just too small to share sound with other people or even for enjoyable personal listening, and headphones are usually not very comfortable or convenient
HOW IT IMPACTS YOU: Sure you can pay $200 for a Bose or $150 for a Jambox but why? For $49 this mini boombox sounds great, is well made, has long battery life, and looks cool. Maybe the brand name isn't that familiar but Sharkk seems to be a fun and innovative company and I'll bet their name will get more popular as time goes on.
COMMENTS: I often form my initial judgment of a product based on its delivery presentation. If a manufacturer can’t take the time and effort into presenting their product with pride I can’t expect them to deliver a quality product or good follow-up support. I was not disappointed in how Sharkk delivers this speaker. The box is protective while not being environmentally wasteful. The speaker is well protected and comes with a USB charging cord, a wall adapter that is a dead ringer for an Apple wall adapter, and a small but comprehensive user manual that is only a wee bit written in machine translated English.
