The First Birthday Cake I Made

My cake making began nearly seven years ago when my eldest son was turning one. Of course I wanted to bake and decorate his first cake, so out came my nan's Women's Weekly Kids Party Cake book. This was the book that we used to choose our birthday cakes from every year for as long as I can remember. My nan is the cook in our family, and I have been lucky enough to have inherited this trait from her.

So I chose the Rocking Horse cake from the book and set about baking the cakes and putting it all together. At the time I was very pleased with it and for a first cake thought it wasn't too bad. Now when I look back it was fairly ordinary, my husband finds it quite funny now and says they were made during "amateur hour"!!

Yes they are french fries potato chips for the mane and tail, smarties for the hooves and saddle, wooden coat hangers for the rocker and licorice bridle and reins and very, very rough butter cream icing!! I can't remember exactly how long it took me to do this cake, but it was several hours.

I am pleased to say that I have come a long way since this cake. Over the next few days I will share some more of my early cakes and the more recent cakes, hopefully you will see a dramatic improvement in my decorating skills :)
