A Week of Comedy

This week, I again indulge myself in watching videos of several stand-up comedy routines. They were videos of the following comedians:

  • Ricky Gervais - Live : Politics
  • Bill Connolly - Live in New York
  • Lewis Black - Red, White & Screwed and Back in Broadway
  • Rex Navarette - Hella Pinoy
  • Bob Saget - Comedy Central Roast
I liked the performance of Ricky Gervais in his routine. It was funny and i could understand most of his subjects even with his British accent. I had difficultly before understanding British shows before because of their twang. I am used to hearing the American accent. This is the first time I watched his stand-up performance and I liked it a lot. I also liked his performance in the movie Ghost Town, one of my fave movies.

As for Bill Connolly, I had trouble understanding his routine because of his Scottish accent. I can only undertand a few segments when he speaks slowly but when he's on a roll, I get lost.

Lewis Black is one of the comedians I can identify with. His routines are usually delivered as rants and I liked them. I can see myself in his routine because I usually rant my observations at home or in the office. I tend to express views that are not usually said in public. By the way, they are not crude or obscene, they're just observations about people and society in general.

Rex Navarette is a Filipino comedian who's routines usually talk about Filipino customs and Filipinos living abroad. I can get most of his jokes but in "Hella Pinoy", his routine is not so refined. Maybe, he's better seen live.

I first heard of Bob Saget as a comedian in the documentary "Aristocrats". He was described as a comedian's comedian who's routine is usually composed of foul ideas. But of this video that I got, he was being roasted by his peers and he only got to speak for a few minutes. I'm still searching for a copy of his videos.

Enjoying Some Comedy

For about a week now, I've not been feeling well. Maybe it's a flu that is yet to come out fully. To pass on the time, for most of the day I have been listening or watching comedy series, films and stand-up comedy.

I've been listening the following stand-up comedy:

I've enjoyed listening to these stand-up comedies even if I've heard them already for a couple of times. If you could find a copy of these, try listening to them. A warning though, most of them include foul language except for Bill Cosby. Mr. Cosby's comedy is basically clean without the use of any offensive language.

Also, try The Aristocrats, if you can take it. It's about 100 comedians telling one dirty joke. This is not for everybody.

Laugh Out Loud.

Enjoying the Music of Adrew Lloyd Webber and the Humorous Songs of Monty Python

Tonight, I have been listening to the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. He's the one behind the great musicals The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, among others. We have had a copy of the album Andrew Lloyd Webber containg 60 of his classic works with some of the famous singers Madonna, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand.

In my playlist now are the songs:

  1. Any Dream Will Do
  2. Oh What a Circus
  3. All I Ask of You
  4. Whistle Down the Wind
  5. I'd Be Suprisingly Good For You
  6. Evermore Without You
  7. No Matter What
  8. All The Love I Have
  9. Learn to be Lonely
  10. Any Dream Will Do
  11. Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again
  12. Close Every Door
Earlier this evening, I was listening to the humurous songs of the Monty Python from their classic comedies The Holy Grail, Life of Brian and the Meaning of Life.

  2. Lumberjack Song
  3. Bruce's Philosophers Song

The Comedy of George Carlin

I've always been a fan of American stand-up comedy for a long time. Part of my collection are the comedy of Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy and the cast "Original Kings of Comedy" featuring Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac. Also, I'm a fan of both Letterman & Leno, Colbert & Stewart.

In the past month, I've been constantly watching the comedy of George Carlin especially his HBO Specials. First encountered his name when I watched the comedy documentary "The Aristocrats". Upon some research, he was considered as one of the trinity of comedy together with Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor. When I first saw one of his HBO specials, I readily noticed that he used observational comedy. However, the difference between him and other observational comedians is that his comedy is intelligent. You can see that he carefully researched his materials and his presentation is impeccable. Although he has passed away recently, his contribution to comedy is undeniable and unforgettable.
