Photos: Spring snow 2014

We had about 2 inches of snow on the ground this morning as I walked around the yard (now up to 3 inches). The temperature was 28 degrees with steadily falling snow and almost white-out conditions west of Staunton. This may be the last one of the season because forecasters are saying the jet stream will shift and begin ushering in warmer temps and more spring-like conditions.

The tree swing, the woods, and a spring snow. Shortly this scene will be all green....

Still need this trusty heat source.

Oops!

They will bounce back by the end of the week when temps hit 60s and then next week when it will be in the 70s.

Photos: 2011 & 2013 spring snowstorms

With the possibility of some type of winter precipitation in the forecasts for March 26, a quick look back in my photo archives showed spring snowstorms in the Shenandoah Valley in the past. Above was from March 24, 2013.

There have been April snowstorms, too, so just because the calendar says spring doesn't mean Old Man Winter won't have a couple more snowballs to throw at us. It's part of the weather in Virginia and specifically in the Shenandoah Valley....

Foggy snow on last day of winter

The woods behind the house are shrouded in fog on this last day of winter 2014. The snow covering the ground will melt quickly as 60-degree temps hit later in the week. Many are ready for spring but the weather doesn't follow the calendar and long-range forecasts suggest the Valley isn't quite yet finished with wintry inclement weather....

Night snow continues on St. Patrick's Day Eve 2014

The obligatory deck-in-the-snow photo. Sunday night at 10:00 the snow depth was 4-5 inches with the temperature at 25 degrees.

 Still coming down....

Late winter snow in Augusta County

These photos were taken just before dark on Sunday as snow continued falling west of Staunton. At 9:00 it is 27 degrees and still snowing.

Heavy snow sticking west of Staunton

The latest winter storm of 2014 began Sunday afternoon shortly after 2:00 as rain mixed with snow began to fall. The temperature that had reached a daytime high of 43 dropped to 41 by the time the rain began. As temps continued to drop, the heavy snow picked up so that by 4:00 it was sticking to the ground, trees, decks, and cars.

By 5:00 the thermometer had dripped below freezing as heavy snow continued.

Weather forecasters had predicted anywhere from 5-10 inches of snow overnight into Monday morning.

Meanwhile, there's a winter wonderland in the central Shenandoah Valley.

It's not sticking yet to sidewalks and roadways but at this rate it will eventually do so. Meanwhile, check any of these for updated forecasts: NBC-29, WHSV TV-3, WxRisk. It may be our last snowstorm of the winter of 2014 so let it snow!

AND 30 MINUTES AFTER THE ABOVE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN....

The heavy, wet snow was sticking to everything enhancing the winter wonderland feeling.

And the snow continues to fall....
