A finished HST quilttop - Een afgewerkte HST quilttop

Here it is: a finished quilttop! The last stems, flowers and leaves were added over the past weeks, as was the final blue border, to make this pretty big quilt (225cm x175 cm).

Hier is ie dan: een afgewerkte quilttop! De laatste stengels, bloemen en bladeren werden aangebracht in de loop van de voorbije weken, net zoals de laatste blauwe boord, om tot deze behoorlijk grote quilt te komen (225cm x175cm).

Heel, heel, heel erg leuk. 

I found the pattern in Quilts Japan Magazine (March 2012 edition) and it had been on my mind ever since.

Het patroon komt uit Quilts Japan Magazine (editie maart 2012) en het sluimerde al sinds toen in mijn achterhoofd. 

I bought a variety of black and white fabrics and the blue flower fabric over a period of a year with this project in mind. The red fabric is an American Jane pindot fabric.

Ik kocht  in de loop van het afgelopen jaar een hoop verschillende zwart en witte stoffen en de blauwe bloemenstof met dit project in gedachten. De rode stof heeft kleine witte stipjes en is van American Jane.

I have a piece of batting that I bought for another quilt, but I hope it's big enough for this one because I can't wait to start quilting.

Er ligt nog ergens een stuk vulling die ik kocht voor een andere quilt, maar ik hoop dat het groot genoeg is voor deze, want ik popel om aan het quilten te beginnen.

The second appliqué border was finished and added this weekend, and I'm happy I managed to do that. Six more weeks to go before the Easter holidays, when I will hopefully have some days off from work and can spend time on this quilt and the Green Tea quilt. What a joy that will be! Here the second border is ready to be appliquéd.

De tweede kant van de appliqué boord raakte dit weekend gestikt, en daar ben ik behoorlijk mee opgezet. Nog zes weken tot de Paasvakantie, dan heb ik hopelijk enkele dagen vrijaf en tijd om aan deze quilt en de Green Tea quilt verder te werken. Dat zal fijn zijn. Hier is de tweede kant klaar om geappliqueerd te worden.

Once finished, we tried to take pictures in the garden, but the wind wasn't in the mood.

Trying machine appliqué - Appliqué met de machine

The pattern for the HST quilt I'm working on at the moment has a border with flowers and leaves. A lot of leaves. Even with my free interpretation of the number needed according to the pattern,  I'll still need heaps to create the desired result. But it will be a nice result.

Het patroon van de HST quilt waar ik momenteel aan werk voorziet een boord met bloemen en bladeren. Vooral bladeren dan, in grote hoeveelheden. Alhoewel ik een vrije invulling geef aan het aantal bladeren dat nodig is (lees: minder dan het patroon voorziet), zijn er toch nog altijd tientallen nodig om wat effect te geven. Maar het effect mag er dan ook wel zijn.

Even with only one of the four borders finished, I really like what I see.

Al is nog maar één van de vier boorden klaar, toch geeft het al een goed idee van hoe het eindresultaat er uit zal zien.

All the leaves were machine-stitched to the background fabric. Not as pretty as hand-appliqué, but it takes two hours in stead of two days. This a detail of how it looks (the stem is hand appliqué, the leaf machine appliqué).

Alle blaadjes werden met de machine op de achtergrond gestikt. Niet zo mooi als met de hand, maar wel klaar na enkele uren in plaats van na enkele dagen. Dit is een detailfoto (de stengel is met de hand geappliqueerd, het blad met de machine).

Once all the appliqué borders are finished, a last border with blue flower fabric will be added. The fabric is ready, but it'll be some weeks before the appliqué is done.

Als alle appliqué boorden af zijn, komt er nog een blauwe bloemenstrook helemaal rond. Daarvoor koos ik de stof al, maar het zal nog wel even duren voor ik aan die laatste boord toekom.

Working on borders - Werken aan boorden

Yesterday we visited Gent, a beautiful town just one hour away from where I live.
Gisteren maakten we een uitstapje naar Gent, maar een uurtje rijden van waar ik woon.

There was some time left to do some sewing this weekend. I started on the borders for the HST quilt. More appliqué, it just seems impossible to escape appliqué...

Er was wat tijd over om aan de quilt te werken, en ik begon aan de boorden van de HST quilt. Weer appliqué, blijkbaar kan ik er niet aan ontsnappen...

A Pacman block - Een Pacman blok

Sunday was sewing day today. Almost the whole day was spent making the Baby carriage flower block (according to my husband it looks more like a Pacman-block), a time-consuming block for the Green Tea quilt project. Not only are there many small pieces in this block, there are also quite some curves and finally, the cherry on the cake, appliqué leaves.

Zondag was naaidag vandaag. Bijna de hele dag werd besteed aan het maken van een ander bloemenblok voor de Green Tea quilt. Volgens de beschrijving een "Baby Carriage Flower block", volgens de wederhelft eerder een Pacman-blok. Het was een vrij tijdrovend blok. Niet alleen waren er veel kleine stukjes, er was ook behoorlijk wat bochtenwerk en, als kers op de taart, appliqué bladeren.

I enjoyed every minute of working on the block, probably because it was one of those lucky days without too many drawbacks. Only once had I to unpick stitches and start over again. And so the block was finished in time to take pictures outside, in daylight.

Ik genoot van elke minuut, waarschijnlijk omdat het één van die dagen was waar ik het geluk had dat alles mooi in de plooi viel. Maar één keer moest ik naden lospeuteren en opnieuw beginnen. En dus was het blok klaar in de loop van de namiddag, ruim op tijd om er nog in daglicht foto's van te maken.

During the past week, I made two more orange peel blocks, to add to the two already finished last weekend.I added the filler blocks on top, underneath and between them, so that their size is the same as that of the Baby Carriage flower block.

Afgelopen week maakte ik nog twee bijkomende appelsienenschillenblokken (hoe heet dat in het Nederlands?). Ik voegde wat vulsel toe boven, onder en in het midden, zodat de maat overeenkomt met dat van het Baby Carriage Flower blok.

There is one more block to be made for this section of the quilt, and after that some filler blocks have to be added before everything of section 4 can be pieced together, but it's looking promising!

Voor dit deel van de quilt moet nog één blok gemaakt worden en wat opvulblokken bijgevoegd links en rechts vooraleer het ganse deel 4 kan samen genaaid worden, maar het ziet er in elk geval veelbelovend uit!

Orange peel blocks

Appliqué, appliqué, appliqué. That's all there seems to be left on this quilt. Seven orange peel blocks are needed, so I started on them today. As I wasn't really happy with the result of my previous appliqué block, I used a different method for these ones. Thank you Lotje for telling me how to do this! (And you can find a tutorial for this method on this website)

Appliqué, appliqué, appliqué. Dat lijkt wel alles wat er nog te doen valt voor deze quilt. Zeven gelijkaardige blokken moeten gemaakt worden, daar ben ik vandaag aan begonnen. Ik was niet echt gelukkig met het resultaat van mijn vorige appliqué blok, dus probeer ik nu een andere methode, met dank aan Lotje om me te vertellen hoe dat precies in zijn werk gaat! (een tutorial voor deze methode vind je op deze website)

It does look a bit better, but the downside to it is that you end up using three layers of fabric instead of just two, so it does feel al bit stiffer. To remedy this, I used the finest fabric I could find for the backing of the orange peels. 

Het resultaat ziet er inderdaad wat netter uit, maar het nadeel is dat je eindigt met drie lagen stof in plaats van de gebruikelijke twee, waardoor het wat stijver aanvoelt. om dat wat te verhelpen, gebruikte ik de dunste doek die ik kon vinden voor de achterkant van de appliqué vormen.

There was only enough time to finish two of the blocks, so these are blocks 33 and 34, 14 more to go. This sounds as if the quilttop is almost done, but when I placed all my blocks in my "design wall", some spots still looked quite empty...

Er was maar genoeg tijd om twee blokken volledig af te werken, dat zijn dus de blokken 33 en 34, 14 te gaan. Dat klinkt wel alsof de quilt stilaan zijn voltooiing nadert, maar toen ik alle blokken op hun juiste plaats ophing, waren sommige plekken nog wel heel erg leeg...

Some appliqué - Een beetje appliqué

The Green Tea quilt has a lot of appliqué blocks and apart from two of them, I managed to happily ignore them all until now. But now I'm stuck. Ignoring is no longer an option. If I want to finish this quilt, I'll have to face these blocks. It's time to grasp the nettle. So I decided to start with a time-consuming block; the clam shells.

In de Green tea quilt zitten behoorlijk wat appliqué blokken, en buiten twee daarvan heb ik die tot nu toe allemaal vrolijk genegeerd. Maar nu zit ik vast. Negeren kan niet meer. Als ik de quilt wil afwerken, dan zal het er van moeten komen. En dus wordt de koe bij de horens gepakt.Vermits ik nog in het bezit ben van frisse moed, koos ik maar dadelijk voor een arbeidsintensief blok: de schelpen. 

After quite some tinkering and fiddling I managed to position the top row of clam shells more or less in a straight line.  The difficult part turned out to be not the appliqué (although there is clearly room for improvement in that area too), but the positioning of the clam shells. The result is acceptable, but the last row is a bit higgleddy-piggledy. I convinced myself it's all part of the charm of this quilt.

Na veel gefriemel en gepruts kreeg ik de vier bovenste schelpen naast elkaar geplaatst. Het moeilijke bleek niet de appliqué zelf te zijn (alhoewel die duidelijk beter zou kunnen), maar het mooi gelijk plaatsen van de schelpen. Uiteindelijk kreeg ik een  aanvaardbaar resultaat, maar de laatste rij staat wel behoorlijk schots en scheef. We zullen maar denken dat dat bijdraagt tot de charme van de quilt.

There was time left for a second appliqué block, and I chose one of the igloo-blocks, copying the original colour scheme.

Er was nog tijd voor een tweede appliqué blok, en daarvoor koos ik één van beide iglo-blokken, helemaal volgens het kleurenschema van het origineel.

Now that this igloo-block is also finished, I can stitch together one section of the four sections of the quilt. All I need to add are some filler blocks, I'll do that tomorrow. Right now other fabrics are waiting to get some attention, ie. a huge pile of laundry...

Nu dat iglo-blok klaar is, kan ik één deel van de vier delen van de quilt helemaal afwerken, er ontbreken enkel wat opvulblokjes in het midden en daar ga ik me morgen mee bezig houden. Nu wachten andere stoffen op me, meer bepaald een grote berg strijk...

What? December 27??

If you have any idea where these past three weeks have gone, please let me know. Last time I checked, December had just started. And these past days were the first of this month there was time to do some sewing.

Als er iemand weet waar de afgelopen drie weken naartoe zijn, dan mag die het komen zeggen. De laatste keer dat ik op een kalender keek, was het nog maar begin december. En de afgelopen dagen waren de eerste van de maand met wat tijd om te naaien.

I'm still happily working on the Green Tea quilt blocks. Progress is slow, but the good news is that more than half of the blocks are done. The bad news is that almost all of the appliqué ones still have to be made. And me and appliqué, we're not good friends. I prefer using my sewing machine.

Ik werk nog altijd goedgemutst aan de Green tea quiltblokken. Het gaat langzaam vooruit, maar het goede nieuws is dat meer dan de helft van de blokken af zijn. Het slechte nieuws is dat de resterende blokken bijna allemaal appliqué zijn. En ik en appliqué, wij zijn geen goede vriendjes. Geef mij maar de naaimachine.

And so this block was completely machine stitched. Not that that was any faster then doing it all by hand because I had to use a thousand pins to keep those curves under control, but I still prefer this method.

Ook dit blok is volledig machinaal in elkaar gezet. Niet dat dat sneller gaat dan met de hand, want ik heb wel duizend spelden gebruikt om de bochten onder controle te houden, maar toch doe ik het liever zo.

The center of the block is a beauty and so is the fabric for the big triangles, but in hindsight I should have chosen a different colour for the middle leaves. It's a bit too orange-y now I think.

Het middengedeelte is echt prachtig en ook de stof aan de zijkant is mooi, maar achteraf bekeken had ik een andere kleur moeten kiezen voor de middelste bloemblaadjes. Nu geeft het wel een heel oranje indruk allemaal samen.

Work on the next block has already started. It's an appliqué one, the clam shells. I finished half of it by the end of the day, so I hope to have it finished by the end of the weekend.

Het volgende blok wordt er eentje met appliqué, vroeg of laat moest het er van komen. Tegen het einde van de namiddag was het half af, dus ik hoop dat het tegen het einde van het weekend helemaal achter de rug is. 

Appliqué

The Green tea and Sweet beans quilt is made of many different blocks, that require different techniques to make them. Of those techniques, appliqué was totally new to me, so I was a somewhat nervous about making these blocks. I started with the Poppy block, where only a large central appliquéd circle is required as the last step in finishing the block.

De Green Tea and Sweet beans quilt bestaat uit veel verschillende blokken, waarvoor je vaak andere technieken moet hanteren om ze te maken. Eén van deze technieken, appliqué, is helemaal nieuw voor mij, en ik was dus wel wat nerveus om aan zo'n blok te beginnen. Ik begon met de Poppy blok, waar alleen een grote centrale cirkel moet geappliqueerd worden om het blok af te werken.

After I did that, I had built some confidence and moved on to a completely appliquéd block, consisting of three flowers on stems. I had to make bias for the stems, also a first and followed the directions in one of my books to do that. As usual, I had to use the seam ripper and start all over again because I always forget to first read ALL the instructions, right up to the last one. And then they say that the older you get the wiser. I just get older.

Nadat ik dat min of meer tot een goed einde had gebracht en zodoende wat zelfvertrouwen had opgebouwd, begon ik aan een volledig geappliqueerd blok, drie bloemen op hun stengels. Voor de stengels moest ik biais snijden, ook een primeur. Daarvoor volgde ik de instructies in een boek, maar zoals gewoonlijk mocht ik herbeginnen omdat ik altijd vergeet om eerste ALLE instructies te lezen, helemaal tot de laatste, vooraleer te beginnen. Ze zeggen nochtans hoe ouder je wordt hoe wijzer. Ik word blijkbaar alleen ouder.

Then I stitched the stems on one side and appliquéd the other side. After that, the flowers and leaves were appliquéd on the background fabric. After finishing the block, I cut it to size, or at least I thought so. I, again, failed to read the instructions right and mistook height for width. Definitely not getting wiser. So now I'll have to stitch an additional piece of fabric to my flower block. But I'm still pleased with this first appliqué block!

Daarna stikte ik de stengels aan één kant vast en de andere kant appliqueerde ik. Vervolgens werden de bloemen en de blaadjes geappliqueerd op de achtergrondstof. Nadat het blok klaar was sneed ik het op de correcte grootte. Dacht ik toch. Ik was er namelijk weer in geslaagd de instructies verkeerd te lezen en haalde hoogte en breedte door elkaar. Wijzer word ik echt niet. Nu moet ik dus weer een stuk eraan zetten. Slim. Maar toch ben ik best tevreden met dit allereerste appliqué blok!
