Films of the Month - December

I watched fifteen films in December 2024, which is an average number for me. I saw most of them with other people, which isn't that usual for December because I seem to just be more social then! Here's what I saw:

I've never seen a Carry On film so when I happened to see one on ITV so I decided to watch it. And I actually quite liked it. Yes they're ridiculous, but it was fun and funny, for the most part

I watched Unicorns and really liked it, I would recommend it

Sam and Jac and I watched Life on the Murder Scene when we were together because we had been talking about it. It's so ridiculous, it's a documentary about the band and it is just so much fun. We enjoyed it

Then we watched Annie together which is one of my favourite musicals of all time but I hadn't seen it in absolutely age

finally Sam and Jac and I watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks just because it happened to be available and we all like it, but I do really like it, it reminds me of being very little

A few people were talking about That Christmas when it came out on Netflix so I watched it. It's really cute, I would recommend it whether you have kids or not

Lee and I watched Home Alone 2 Lost in New York together which I do like, we generally watch the first one but hadn't seen this one in ages

I absolutely loved the book The Secret Scripture when I read it years and years ago and I happened to notice there is a film of it which had passed me by before. I thought it was a pretty good adaptation. It's a sad story though

Lee and I couldn't see Gremlins at the cinema like we wanted to because other plans got in the way, so we made sure to watch it a couple of weeks before Christmas. I think I've only seen it once before so I hadn't remembered a lot of it, so it was good to see again

Lee and I watched The Muppet Christmas Carol which is a classic for me, I love it so much

Then a few days later we watched Die Hard which is also a Christmas classic, isn't it?

We were scrolling through the films on Lee's media player thing when I noticed Solo, which I think we've only seen a couple of times, so I suggested it. I like it, I think it's a decent addition to the canon

Then I had a long gap over Christmas and family stuff, but when Lee and I were away we had Netflix so he was scrolling through and he noticed this. I haven't ever seen it so I was willing to watch it. I liked it - not my favourite Adam Sandler film but it was pretty good

Next I made Lee watch Paddington because he had never seen it. He liked it. We'll have to get round to watching the second two too

Finally we watched Demolition Man on New Year's Eve, which I hadn't ever seen it. It was fine. I'm not a fan of Sylvester Stallone, but I quite liked it

Films of the Month - November

I watched an absolute ton of films in November! I tried really hard and I'm pleased to say I watched twenty films, which is great! Here's what I saw:

Netflix must have recommended this documentary to me and I did find it fascinating. I am trying to wean myself off watching so much true crime, though

Lee and I watched The Omen together, because it was only the day after Halloween so we thought that was fine. It is a classic

Netflix definitely recommended Martha to me. I don't know much about her so I was intrigued to learn more. It is fascinating, she has had a bonkers life. She doesn't come across great in it, but I'm not sure she's self aware enough to know that

I have been meaning to watch Priscilla for a while and finally got round to it. It's okay. I don't think it was great. But you did understand just how badly she was treated by Elvis and the people around her

Because I had watched the first Hocus Pocus I watched the second one too. It's not as good but I thought it was still decent, I still love Sarah Jessica Parker

This is a fascinating film and I really liked it. Anna Kendrick was great

This adaptation of Jude was on iPlayer so I gave it a go. I only vaguely know the story, so it was interesting to find it all out. It is hard going though, it's a tough story

Sam and I went to the cinema to see Paddington in Peru, as I said previously. It wasn't as good as the other two, but still pretty good

I've been meaning to watch this biopic of Whitney Houston for ages and finally got round to it. I thought it was alright

Lee and I watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit together, I haven't seen it in absolutely forever but I like it a lot

Lee wanted to watch First Blood with me so we did, I've never seen it before but I really liked it even though I don't really like Stallone

We watched The Matrix together too, it's been a while since I saw that as well

I was interested to see this film about consumer habits and stuff; I think I probably did learn some things but it hasn't really stayed with me

Sam and I watched Team America World Police together, it's so ridiculous but kind of funny

Lee and I watched Night of the Hunter together, it's absolutely brilliant and I'm really glad we bothered to see it

This documentary about Loaded magazine was absolutely fascinating. It was on iPlayer and it was just such a throwback to the mid 90s and that whole time and culture and the stuff it paved the way for. Definitely watch it if you're a similar age to me

I chose this for me and Sam and Jac to watch together but it wasn't very good at all, whoops

Lee and I watched Ocean's Eleven because why not. It's still great

I was browsing films on iPlayer and came across the Tomb Raider films so I started with this one, which I don't think I've seen before

Finally Lee and I watched True Grit which was also really good

Films of the Month - October

By the time you read this it will be Boxing Day! Mad that another Christmas has come and gone and it will soon be 2025, which is real living in the future territory, isn't it. But I'm still blogging about October, sorry. Bear with me a little longer. I watched fourteen films in October which was a good number especially considering that I was away for a week in the middle. Here's what I saw:

I saw a few people talking about Will & Harper, which is about Will Ferrell and his friend Harper, who is a trans woman. She was a writer on Saturday Night Live and came out more recently. The documentary sees the two of them travel across the USA talking about Harper's transition and so on. I really liked it and would recommend it. I'm not the biggest fan of Will Ferrell but he came across brilliantly - so genuine, really honest, but ultimately just totally there for his friend even as he got to know the new her

Sam and Jac and I watched this together online. We really made the effort in October to watch some stuff together, which was nice. Sam chose this and it was really fun and touching, I liked it

I saw this film about northern soul music on the BBC and gave it a go. It was fine, nothing special and it didn't really use the music enough for me, but it was fine

Lee and I watched the South Park film together and I know it's terrible but somehow I just really like it, it reminds me of being young

I watched Saltburn again, I watched it earlier in the year but wanted to see it again with the knowledge of what happens at the end. I liked it still, it's not my favourite film ever but it is very well done

Netflix recommended The Trouble With Jessica to me so I gave it a go. I liked Shirley Henderson in it a lot but otherwise it was quite forgettable

Lee and I watched In the Loop together, it's absolutely forever since I've seen it but I really like it

I had watched the new TV drama about Prince Andrew with Michael Sheen, which reminded me of Scoop, which is with Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell instead. I think they both have their strong points, although I do find it odd to be already making films about things that only happened a few years ago

Sam and Jac and I watched Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. I've never seen any of the Jumanji films so it was all new to me, but I liked it a lot. Jack Black especially was good and it was really fun

I finally got around to watching My Policeman after meaning to for ages. I liked it, it was emotional and lovely

Netflix recommended Rumor Has It to me and I like Jennifer Aniston so I gave it a go. It was alright, nothing special but fine to watch

I watched a three part documentary about Elizabeth Taylor, having known very little about her, so I decided to watch one of her most famous roles. It was alright, I didn't love the story, but I can see why it's a classic

Lee and I watched Halloween together on Halloween, it's such a classic and so good. I love Jamie Lee Curtis so much

Finally Jac and I watched Hocus Pocus together later on Halloween. I've never seen it! But it's brilliant! I really liked it, I love Sarah Jessica Parker's character a lot

Films of the Month - September

I watched fourteen films in September which wasn't bad to say that I was away for a week of it. Here's what I saw:

Sam and Jac and I watched 24 Hour Party People together which was my choice, I love it and it was fun to watch together

I watched Dial M for Murder on the BBC; I haven't seen a lot of Hitchcock films but I've heard of this one of course and probably seen a zillion parodies of it, so I thought I should watch it. I really enjoyed it. I ought to watch more old films, really

Netflix recommended this to me and as I like Anne Hathaway I took a chance on it. I didn't love it but I did like it; I'm glad I've seen it but I probably won't watch it again

I dunno why I fancied watching Mary Poppins Returned again, but I did, so I did. I think it's an okay sequel. I still don't like Ben Whishaw

I've been watching the new series of the Famous Five on the BBC and I think they're really good remakes, I've thoroughly enjoyed them and think they're really good for kids. The last one in the series was really cute

I watched the second Kingsman film because I'm absolutely just making my way through them again. It's not as good as the first one but it is still fun

I listened to the audiobook of this book over several weeks while commuting, and when I saw there was a film I wanted to see it, especially as it stars Philippa Soo, because I like her. I don't think it stood up to the book, but it was okay

Lee and I saw the beginning of Just Married while in our cabin on the cruise, and I thought it was quite fun so I watched it. I love Brittany but the film overall is just a bit forced and flat

As we were on Mykonos my mum and I were talking about Shirley Valentine. I'd never seen it so I thought I would. I really liked it, it's a classic for a reason!

Netflix recommend this to me too, and as I like Natasha Lyonne I decided to give it a go. It's a bit harrowing, and moving, and very understarted. I would recommend it if you like that type of film

I watched the second Addams Family animated film because it was on the BBC. I've seen it before but didn't remember much about it. It is cute

I've never seen Drop Dead Fred but I really like Rik Mayall so I thought I would take a chance on it. It's a cute film, I didn't like the lead woman though

I watched the Broadway recording of Hamilton just because I love it and the songs. It is so good, I just love it

Finally, Sam and I saw this in the cinema and it was just so good - I really recommend it. Kate Winslet is brilliant
